Can You Run Two Clipboard Managers at Once?

You can run two clipboard managers at once, and nothing breaks outright, but it's rarely worth it. Both record every copy, so you get two histories of the same items, and when you paste from one, the other records that paste as a new copy. Keep one clipboard history long term, including Windows' own Win+V history. Tools that only put things on the clipboard, such as ShareX or a text expander, are fine to run alongside it.

Why two histories get messy

Windows lets any number of apps register for clipboard change notifications. Each one gets a message whenever the clipboard changes, reads the new content and saves it in its own history. So with two managers running:

• Every copy is stored twice, in two places, under two sets of retention rules. Passwords that slip through end up in both.
• Pastes echo. Clicking an item in one manager puts it back on the clipboard so it can be pasted. The other manager sees a clipboard change and records it again, or moves it to the top.
• They compete for the clipboard. Only one app can have the clipboard open at a time; Microsoft's documentation notes that opening it fails if another window already has it open. Managers retry, but extra readers add more chances of a missed or delayed copy.
• Shortcuts can clash if you've customised them to the same keys.

Which pairings work

Clipboard manager plus Win+V

Windows clipboard history is a clipboard manager too, so the same rules apply. After installing a third-party manager, turn it off in Settings > System > Clipboard > Clipboard history. ShareX and Snipping Tool create clipboard content; they don't keep a history of everything you copy. Your clipboard manager records each screenshot they put on the clipboard, which gives you more than just the latest one to paste. Clipboard manager plus a text expander

Expanders react to what you type, so they don't compete with a clipboard manager. Two details matter:

• Espanso inserts snippets longer than 100 characters through the clipboard by default and then restores your previous clipboard after 300 ms. Your clipboard manager may record those long expansions.
• PhraseExpress has its own clipboard manager. If you use a separate one, turn PhraseExpress's off with the Clipboard Cache option under Features in its settings.

When running two managers makes sense

The one good reason is a short trial or migration, when you want to compare a new tool with the old one. Keep it to a few days, then turn one off. If you want both installed but only one recording, pause the other instead of quitting it:

How to check what's recording your clipboard

1. Open Settings > System > Clipboard and check whether Clipboard history is on.
2. Look in the system tray, including the hidden-icons arrow, for Ditto, CopyQ, ClipboardFusion, Edge Drop or other clipboard tools.
3. Check Settings > Apps > Startup for clipboard tools that start with Windows.

Can I use Ditto and Win+V at the same time?

Yes, but every copy goes into both histories. Turn Win+V history off once Ditto has what you need.

Will two clipboard managers slow down my PC?

Not usually in a way you'd notice, but they do double the reading and saving work for every copy, and add more apps competing to open the clipboard.

Does a password manager's copy end up in both?

Only if a manager ignores the "don't record this" formats password managers set. Ditto, CopyQ, Edge Drop and Win+V all skip copies marked that way.
