Canva, Photopea, and Browser Editors: Paste Limits
By Khushi Yadav
Canva, Photopea, Pixlr, and other editors that run in a browser do not read the Windows clipboard the way Photoshop does. They read what the browser is allowed to hand them. That permission prompt, the page’s own upload button, and the difference between a bitmap and a file list explain most “paste does nothing” tickets.
This guide is the reliable path: grant clipboard access or upload the PNG. Do not expect Win+V to push an image into a tab.
Windows history is still a viewer for the last 25 qualifying items (text, HTML, bitmap, 4 MB, unpinned wipe on restart). The live clipboard is what Ctrl+V sends. Items over 4 MB may exist as the live item and never appear in Win+V.
How a browser sees the clipboard
A native app calls the Windows clipboard APIs. A web app uses the Async Clipboard API (and older paste events). MDN documents that the browser can:
- Require a user gesture (Ctrl+V in the page)
- Require permission for
clipboard-read - Expose only certain MIME types (
image/png,text/plain,text/html) - Refuse a file list (Explorer copy) even though Paint would accept a bitmap
If the clipboard holds a huge DIB and no PNG type, some sites paste nothing. If it holds HTML from “Copy image” on the web, the site may paste a URL or fail.

Extensions (password managers, privacy tools, “clipboard cleaners”) can strip image MIME types. Test in a clean profile if paste fails only in one browser.
Canva
Canva Help documents adding images from the Photos tab and from Uploads. Upload is the supported, reliable way to bring a local file into a design. The Uploads article lists Uploads > Upload files, folder upload, and dragging from a computer folder onto the Uploads tab.
What users also do:
- Win+Shift+S or Copy image.
- Click the Canva canvas.
- Ctrl+V.
This often works in the desktop app and in a browser that has granted clipboard permission. It fails when:
- The browser blocked clipboard
- The tab is not focused (the comment field is)
- The clipboard holds a file list, not a bitmap
- The image exceeds what Canva will accept (workspace/plan limits; confirm in current Canva help if an error appears)
Reliable path:
- Confirm a PNG exists (Pictures\Screenshots or Export).
- In Canva, Uploads > Upload files.
- Place the upload on the design.
Canva desktop versus Canva web can differ. If browser paste fails, use Uploads or the desktop app.
Do not build a brand kit out of pasted snips. Upload the official PNG/SVG from the brand folder. SVG vs PNG on the Clipboard. How to Keep Transparent PNGs Transparent Through Paste.
A snip of a glass UI is opaque. Canva cannot invent alpha. Export PNG with transparency, then upload.
Photopea
Photopea is a Photoshop-like editor in the browser. It generally accepts:
- Ctrl+V of a bitmap (new document or new layer, depending on what is open)
- File > Open for local files
- Drag-drop of files onto the page (when the browser allows)
Photopea publishes a short tutorial on granting clipboard permission in Chrome and Edge (site information > allow clipboard). If paste does nothing, check that permission before blaming Windows.
Photopea can preserve transparency on a pasted PNG better than some messengers. That is still not a reason to skip File > Open for a master asset.
If paste creates a new document the size of the snip, the clipboard held pixels. Save immediately to the computer (File > Export as > PNG). A refresh of the tab can drop unsaved work. The Windows clipboard will not remember a 20-layer Photopea document.
Photopea Learn covers File Open / export. Treat the tab as volatile. The PNG on disk is the master.
Other browser editors (Pixlr, Figma web, Google Drawings)
Same pattern:
| Symptom | Fix | |
|---|---|---|
| Paste does nothing | Click the canvas, grant clipboard permission, retry | |
| Paste inserts a link | The clipboard was HTML/URL; Save image as and upload | |
| Drag from a shelf or Explorer fails | Many pages only accept drops on an upload well | Use the site’s upload control |
| Quality looks poor | The site recompressed; upload a PNG; do not paste a Slack preview | |
| Works in desktop app, not Chrome | Browser permission or extension blocking clipboard |

Google Drawings and Slides often accept Ctrl+V of a bitmap after a click on the canvas. They still recompress. For print, stay in a desktop editor.
Desktop shelves versus web drop targets
A hover shelf that performs a native Windows file drag works in desktop Photoshop and often in desktop Canva. The same drag onto a Chrome tab may be ignored unless the page registered a drop zone.
That is why “browsers often want upload, not a native file drag from a desktop shelf” is the honest product limit. Edge-Drop can still stage the file; the last step in Chrome is often Upload. That is not a shelf bug.
Workaround: drag from the shelf to Explorer (or keep the file there), then use the site upload picker. Or paste Ctrl+V if the site implements clipboard images.

Windows-side hygiene
- History On if small bitmaps should be retrievable this session (Win+V > Turn on).
- Auto-save snips so a failed web paste is not the only copy.
- Test the clipboard in Paint before blaming Canva.
- After uploading confidential UI, clear history on a shared PC.
- Leave Clipboard history across your devices off. Sync is text. It will not push a PNG to another PC’s Canva tab.

ShareX Save image to file plus Canva Uploads is a cleaner pipeline than ShareX copy plus hope. Using ShareX After-Capture Plus a Clipboard Shelf.
Worked example: a Canva social set from local PNGs
- Export three 1080×1080 PNGs from Photoshop into
social\aug\. - In Canva browser, Uploads the folder (or the three files).
- Build the designs from uploads, not from Win+Shift+S of the Photoshop window.
- If a fourth last-minute snip is needed, Ctrl+V after granting clipboard permission. Then download the Canva result — do not consider the snip the master.
Photopea variant: File > Open the same three PNGs as layers, export, done. Paste is the emergency door.
If step 2’s drag onto the tab does nothing, drop onto the Uploads panel specifically, or use Upload files. A drop on the canvas is a different target than a drop on the library.
Extensions that break paste
Password managers, privacy extensions, and “clipboard cleaner” add-ons can strip image MIME types. Test in a clean profile if paste fails only in one browser.
Enterprise Edge policies can disable clipboard access for web apps. That is a policy issue. Uploads still work. If the lock icon on the address bar shows clipboard blocked, do not keep hitting Ctrl+V. Use Upload files. The PNG on disk is the asset; the browser tab is only the last-mile editor.
When to leave the browser
Color-managed print, big PSDs, and repeatable batch exports still belong in Photoshop or a local editor. Browser editors are excellent for one-off social sizes. They are a weak DAM. Keep masters on disk.
Illustrator vectors should not rely on browser paste. Export SVG or PNG, then upload. Illustrator Clipboard Preferences That Change Everything.
Premiere stills should be Export Frame files, then upload. A Program Monitor snip into Canva includes scopes. Premiere and After Effects: Still Frames on the Clipboard.
