Edge Drop vs Espanso: Clipboard Shelf or Text Expander?

Edge Drop vs Espanso: Clipboard Shelf or Text Expander? — Edge Drop Guide

Espanso and Edge Drop solve different problems. Espanso is a free, open-source text expander: type a trigger such as :sig and it replaces it with your saved text, using matches you keep in YAML files. Edge Drop is a clipboard shelf: it keeps what you've copied, including screenshots and Explorer files, as cards at the screen edge that you click to paste or drag into other apps. Use Espanso for text you type repeatedly, Edge Drop for things you copy and need again, or both.

What Espanso does

Espanso describes itself as a privacy-first, cross-platform text expander written in Rust. Its GitHub page lists:

  • Windows, macOS and Linux support.
  • Forms, date expansion and shell commands.
  • Regex triggers.
  • Packages from the Espanso Hub, installed with a built-in package manager.
  • App-specific configurations, so a match can behave differently, or be turned off, in particular apps.

There's also a clipboard extension, which inserts the *current* clipboard contents into a match. It reads only what's on the clipboard now, not anything you copied earlier, so it doesn't make Espanso a clipboard history.

On Windows, Espanso's configuration lives in %APPDATA%\espanso, and matches go in match\base.yml. Run espanso path to see where the files are, or espanso edit to open the configuration in your default text editor (Notepad on Windows). Alt+Space opens Espanso's search bar so you can find a match by name. If YAML files put you off, the best text expanders for Windows compares Espanso with point-and-click alternatives.

A starter Espanso config

Open match\base.yml in Notepad or your editor. It already contains a matches: line with an example; add your entries below that line, indented as shown, so that part of the file looks like this, then save:

matches:
  - trigger: ":sig"
    replace: "Best regards,\nYour Name"

  - trigger: ":addr"
replace: "1 Example Street, Example Town"

  - trigger: ":today"
    replace: "{{mydate}}"
    vars:
      - name: mydate
        type: date
        params:
          format: "%Y-%m-%d"

Typing :today inserts the date in year-month-day form. Replace the signature and address with your own. Keeping base.yml in a git repository gives you history and lets you share it across machines.

None of this needs a clipboard manager, and none of it should live as pinned clipboard items. A pinned card doesn't fire while you type and can't fill in today's date.

What Edge Drop does

Edge Drop handles the things you didn't plan to type: a stack trace you copied an hour ago, a screenshot of a failing test, a folder of log files.

  • Images and files as cards. Screenshots are thumbnails; files copied in Explorer stay on the shelf after you copy other things.
  • Drag-out. Drag an image or file out of Edge Drop into an issue tracker, chat, email or editor that accepts dropped files.
  • Stacks. Group up to 10 images or files and drag them as one.
  • Click to paste text and links into the app you were using, without the shelf taking focus.
  • Search. A search box matches text, links and file names; searching Edge Drop history explains its limits.

Edge Drop has no triggers, snippets, templates or scripting.

A day using both

  1. Type :sig at the end of an email. Espanso inserts your signature.
  2. Copy four log files in Explorer. They appear on the Edge Drop shelf.
  3. Drag two of them into a bug report.
  4. Copy a URL, carry on working, and later click it on the shelf to paste it.

A few rules keep the pair tidy:

  • Expand text in place. Don't write matches that dump long text onto the clipboard just so the shelf can hold it.
  • Keep one clipboard history. Espanso doesn't record history, so it doesn't conflict with Edge Drop, but don't add a second history app on top.
  • Be careful around passwords. Use Espanso's app-specific configuration to turn it off where you don't want expansion, and use Edge Drop's Incognito mode to pause capture while you handle credentials. Keeping secrets out of clipboard managers covers the rest.

Which do you need?

Write two lists: text I type over and over, and things I copy and need again.

  • If the first list is long, install Espanso. If you'd rather not edit YAML, a GUI expander such as PhraseExpress is the alternative; see Edge Drop vs PhraseExpress. If you want templates and a big multi-clipboard in one free app, see Edge Drop vs Clipboard Master.
  • If the second list is mostly screenshots and files, install Edge Drop.
  • If both lists are long, use both.
  • If both are short, Windows' built-in Win+V and your editor's own snippets may be enough.

On a managed work PC, ask IT before installing either. Text expanders watch your typing and clipboard managers watch your clipboard, and both are reasonable things for a security team to want to review.

FAQ

Is Espanso a clipboard manager?

No. It can insert the current clipboard contents into a match, but it doesn't keep a history of past copies.

Is Espanso free?

Yes. It's free and open source under the GPL-3.0 licence. The project accepts donations.

Does Edge Drop have snippets or text expansion?

No. Edge Drop keeps a history of what you copy; for typed shortcuts, use an expander such as Espanso.
