What Should Clipboard Incognito Mode Actually Do?

What Should Clipboard Incognito Mode Actually Do? — Edge Drop Guide

Browser incognito is a well-understood idea: this session is not added to the long-term list. Clipboard “incognito” should mean the same thing. Many tools only offer a vague pause that still writes a file, or they dump the queue when pause ends. That is worse than no feature.

Windows clipboard history has no incognito mode. The substitutes are: history off, delete one card, or Clear all.

The name is borrowed. Browser incognito still uses the OS clipboard. Clipboard incognito, if it exists, still does not hide the live clipboard from other processes. Can Other Apps Read Everything You Copy?.

What good looks like

A defensible incognito / pause:

  1. Immediate. The next Ctrl+C is not stored. No “after you restart the app.”
  2. Visible. Tray icon, badge, or edge color changes so the user knows it is on.
  3. Hotkey. Reaching Settings mid-login is how people forget.
  4. No replay. Copies that arrived during pause are not flushed into history on resume.
  5. Orthogonal to secret formats. Password-manager exclusion still applies when incognito is off.
  6. Does not upload. If cloud sync exists, pause must stop upload too.
  7. Easy to leave. A pause that lasts three weeks because it is hidden is just a broken manager.
  8. Survives a crash. If the app dies while paused, it should come back paused or at least not replay the buffer.

How to Stop Clipboard Managers From Saving Secrets.

Always-on ignore lists beat a mode that must be remembered. Incognito is for the odd session (password reset, payroll, medical portal) that is not already covered by window titles.

Windows Win+V

There is no pause toggle on Settings > System > Clipboard.

Workarounds:

NeedOfficial action
Stop recording for goodClipboard history Off
Stop cloudDevices toggle Off
Remove one secretWin+V > … > Delete
Remove unpinned listClear all or Clear clipboard data
Keep a snippetPin it — never pin a secret

Unpinned items also die at restart. That is a blunt timer, not incognito. How to Clear Clipboard History on Windows 11.

If the machine is a jump box, skip the workarounds and leave history off. Should You Disable Clipboard History on a Work Laptop?.

Microsoft’s 25-item cap will eventually drop an old secret as new copies arrive. Do not use that as a privacy mode. Someone can press Win+V in the next minute.

CopyQ

Official paths:

  • Disable storing (FAQ: how to disable storing clipboard).
  • Ignore window titles (password managers).
  • Default ignore of Microsoft secret formats — this is always-on incognito for those copies, which is better than a manual pause.
  • Do not override onSecretClipboardChanged to store everything.
  • File > Show Clipboard Content confirms whether the current clipboard is marked secret.

A Script command can implement a pause. The default product is already closer to “good” on secrets than most trays.

If a pause script is used, test replay. A command that merely hides the UI while still writing tabs is not incognito.

CopyQ encryption is a separate control. Pause does not encrypt yesterday’s tab.

Ditto

Look for disable-on-copy / exclude lists / a pause option in the current Options dialog (labels move). The important test is no replay. Copy a dummy password while paused, resume, search Ditto. Zero hits.

Cap history so a missed pause still ages out.

KeePass’s FAQ documents excluding KeePass.exe in Ditto’s Accepted Copy Applications. That exclude should stay on even when incognito is off.

Network / Friends features must be off or paused with the same switch. A local pause with a share still on is not incognito.

ClipboardFusion

The official compare page lists Pause/Resume ClipboardFusion as a hotkey on Free and Pro. Use it during vault work. Combine with Ignore Specified Applications. Pro sync should be off or paused as well — a local pause with cloud still on is not incognito.

Triggers that fire “on clipboard change” should not run during pause. If they do, the pause is cosmetic.

PhraseExpress

Disable Features > Clipboard Cache, or restrict the cache to programs that never see secrets. Expander-only mode is cleaner than a cache pause.

If PhraseExpress is only expanding snippets, it should not be in the clipboard-recorder set at all. PhraseExpress vs Ditto.

What a shelf should do

A hover shelf used for images and files can reduce text-secret risk by not being the text archive. If it still records text:

  • A dedicated incognito switch on the shelf.
  • Skip Microsoft secret formats.
  • No upload (local-first).

Edge-Drop documents an incognito-style pause and format skips. Judge the installed build with the dummy-password test, not the landing page. It is not a replacement for a password manager.

A shelf that keeps showing the last text card in a preview tooltip while “incognito” is on has failed the visible-state test.

A one-minute drill

  1. Turn incognito/pause on.
  2. Copy incognito-should-not-store.
  3. Turn pause off.
  4. Search history. The string must be absent.
  5. Copy incognito-over. That string should appear, proving the manager still works.

If step 4 fails, the feature is decorative. Use window ignore and shorter auto-delete instead. Auto-Delete Timers for Clipboard History.

Add two extra drills when the product has cloud or pins:

  1. With pause on, copy incognito-cloud. Confirm no second device receives it.
  2. Confirm a pin created before pause is still a pin, and that pause did not pin the ignored copies.

When to skip the feature and just turn history off

  • Shared work laptop.
  • The only copies are passwords.
  • The user will not look at the tray icon.
  • Policy already grayed Clipboard history.
  • Pairing or a recorded demo where Win+V might pop up.

Windows 10 had the same lack of a Win+V pause. Support ended October 14, 2025.

Browser incognito is not clipboard incognito

Copying from an InPrivate or Chrome Incognito window still places data on the OS clipboard. Windows history may store it. That surprise has its own page: Does Clipboard History Record Incognito Browser Copies?.

Some browsers add secret formats in private windows; CopyQ may ignore those copies. Win+V is not documented as “skip all InPrivate text.” Test the browsers in use.

A clipboard pause plus a private window is the combination that matches user intent: this research session should not land in Ditto *or* in the browser’s long-term history.

Recall on Copilot+ PCs is a third log. Microsoft documents that supported browsers filter private browsing from snapshots. That is not a clipboard pause. Windows Recall vs the Clipboard.

Team use

Incognito that only one person understands will stay off. For a small IT shop:

  • Document the hotkey.
  • Require pause during password resets.
  • Prefer vault ignore lists so pause is backup, not the only control.
  • Put the hotkey on the new-hire clipboard page next to “do not pin secrets.”

A pause that must be remembered at the worst moment will be forgotten. Always-on exclusion formats are the better primary control.

During a screen-share, pause is not enough if Win+V is still on. Clear all first. Pair Programming: Do Not Leave Secrets in History.

Local-First Clipboard: What the Phrase Should Mean.

Train the habit on a dummy: pause, copy should-not-store, resume, search. If the string is there, file a bug or uninstall. A pause that lies is worse than no pause because people trust it during the worst copies. Incognito should stop recording, not break Ctrl+V.
