Paste Missing From the Right-Click Menu in Windows 11? Fixes

In Windows 11 File Explorer, Paste isn't a word in the right-click list. It's one of the icons in the row at the top of the menu, next to Cut, Copy, Rename, Share and Delete, and it only works when the clipboard holds files or folders. If you copied text or an image, a folder has nothing to paste, so Paste is grayed out or missing. If Paste is missing even after you copy files, restart Windows Explorer, then look for a faulty shell extension.

Where Paste is in the Windows 11 menu

1. Copy a file or folder (select it and press Ctrl+C).
2. Go to the destination folder and right-click an empty area of the window, not a file.
3. Look at the row of icons at the top or bottom of the menu, depending on where it opens. Hover over each one to see its name; one of them is Paste.

• Select Show more options at the bottom of the menu, or press Shift+F10, to open the full classic menu, where Paste is listed as text.
• Use the Paste button in the command bar at the top of the File Explorer window, or simply press Ctrl+V.

Why Paste is grayed out or missing

• The clipboard doesn't hold files. A folder can only paste files and folders. Text from a document or an image copied in a browser can't be pasted into a folder this way, so the command is unavailable. Copy the file itself in File Explorer first. • Something replaced the clipboard. The clipboard holds one item at a time. If you copied anything else after the file, the file is no longer on it.
• You right-clicked a file instead of empty space. The menu for a file is about that file. Right-click the background of the destination folder.

In other apps the same rule applies: Paste in the right-click menu is usually grayed out when the clipboard holds nothing that app can accept, such as an image when you right-click in a plain-text box.

If Paste is missing even after copying files

When the menu itself is broken, Paste disappears along with other entries, the menu is slow to open, or it doesn't open at all. The usual cause is a *shell extension*: an add-on from another app (cloud storage, archive tools, antivirus, media converters) that adds its own items to the right-click menu.

1. Restart Windows Explorer. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, right-click Windows Explorer and select Restart. If the menu works afterwards but breaks again later, an extension is the likely cause. Restarting Explorer to fix copy-paste explains what this does.
2. Think about what you installed recently. If the problem started after installing an app that adds right-click entries, update or uninstall that app and test again.
3. Find the extension with ShellExView. NirSoft's free ShellExView lists every shell extension. Hide Microsoft's own entries using its Hide All Microsoft Extensions option, select the third-party context-menu extensions, choose Disable Selected Items, then use Options > Restart Explorer. If Paste comes back, re-enable the extensions a few at a time until it breaks again.

5. Check system files. As a last resort, open Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow to repair damaged Windows files.

NirSoft's page lists ShellExView as supporting Windows versions up to Windows 10, so on Windows 11 be conservative: disable only third-party entries, change a few at a time, and note what you changed so you can turn it back on.

Right-click paste in apps with their own menus

• Terminals. In Windows Terminal, right-click pastes immediately by default instead of opening a menu (if text is selected, it copies it). The older console window behaves similarly. There's no Paste item to look for.
• Web apps and some desktop apps draw their own right-click menus. Use Ctrl+V or the app's Edit menu. In Google Docs, the menu's Paste works in Chrome only with the Docs Offline extension; can't paste in Chrome or Edge explains why.

Workarounds while you fix it

• Ctrl+V pastes without the menu.
• Shift+F10 or Show more options opens the classic menu.
