How to Take a Scrolling Screenshot on Windows 11

Windows 11 has no built-in scrolling screenshot: Snipping Tool and Win+Shift+S only capture what's visible on screen. For a web page, use your browser instead. In Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl+Shift+S and choose Capture full page; in Firefox, right-click the page, select Take Screenshot and choose Save full page. For any other app, use a free capture tool such as ShareX, whose Scrolling capture scrolls the window for you and stitches the result into one tall image.

Microsoft Edge: Capture full page

Edge's Screenshot tool (called Web capture in older versions) can capture a whole page, including the parts you'd have to scroll to see.

1. Open the page and scroll through it once so lazy-loaded images have a chance to load.
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or right-click the page and select Screenshot. It's also in the Settings and more (...) menu.
3. Select Capture full page.
4. Review the capture, then save it as a file or copy it. You can also draw on it before saving.

If the shortcut does nothing, click inside the page first and try again, or use the right-click menu.

Firefox: Save full page

1. Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. Ctrl+Shift+S also opens it.
2. Select Save full page in the top-right corner. Save visible captures only what's on screen.
3. Select Download to save the PNG, or Copy to put it on the clipboard.

Chrome: use DevTools

Chrome's developer tools include a full-page capture command:

1. Press F12 to open DevTools.
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the Command Menu.
3. Type screenshot and select Capture full size screenshot.

Chrome downloads the capture as a PNG file.

Any app: ShareX scrolling capture

For anything that isn't a web page in a browser, such as a long settings window, a chat history or a document in a desktop app, use ShareX. It's free and open source.

1. Open ShareX and select Capture > Scrolling capture. You can also assign a hotkey to Start/Stop scrolling capture in ShareX's hotkey settings.
2. Drag to select the region that scrolls.
3. ShareX scrolls the content, takes a screenshot at each step and joins them together, then shows you the result.

A coloured indicator in the top-right corner shows how well the stitching went: green for success, yellow when some frames didn't match perfectly, and red when the first two frames couldn't be joined and the capture stopped.

Whatever you've set in ShareX's After capture tasks then runs as usual. Turn on Save image to file so the long screenshot is kept as a file.

Fix a bad scrolling screenshot

Most stitching problems come from the page, not the tool:

If a page won't stitch cleanly, two alternatives often work better:

• Print to PDF. Press Ctrl+P and choose Microsoft Print to PDF or the browser's Save as PDF. You get searchable text and selectable links, which a screenshot doesn't have.
• Record a video. Press Windows logo key + Shift + R, select the area, start recording and scroll slowly. This suits feeds and pages that never end.

What to do with a very tall screenshot

A full-page capture can be thousands of pixels tall, which causes problems downstream:

• Keep it as a file. Very large images can exceed the 4 MB limit for Windows clipboard history, so they won't appear in Win+V even though they paste once. Why your huge screenshot never appears in Win+V explains the limit.
• Slice it for design tools. Figma scales down any image wider or taller than 4096 pixels, so a long page loses detail when pasted or imported. Crop it into sections first; pasting a screenshot into Figma without quality loss has more.
• Crop before sharing in chat. Chat apps often shrink or compress very tall images. Crop the section people need, and attach the full file for anyone who wants context.

FAQ

Can Snipping Tool take a scrolling screenshot?

No. Snipping Tool captures a rectangle, a window, a freeform shape or the full screen, and records video, but it doesn't scroll and stitch. Microsoft points to third-party tools for long scrolling pages.

Does Print Screen capture the whole page?

Can a clipboard manager take scrolling screenshots?

Is a PDF better than a long screenshot?

For documents, articles and reports, usually yes: a PDF is smaller, searchable and keeps links. A screenshot is better when you need to show exactly how the page looks.
