Can You Clipboard a Selection of Mixed File Types?
By Khushi Yadav
Select a PDF, a JPEG, and a Word document in the same Explorer window, press Ctrl+C, and paste into another folder. All three arrive. Windows does not care that the extensions differ. CF_HDROP is a list of paths, not a list of types. There is no “mixed selection” exception.
What you cannot have is a single Win+V card that previews all three as one object. History does not store files. It stores text, HTML, and bitmap, 25 items, 4 MB, unpinned items cleared on restart.
Yes: as a file list
Microsoft Learn: CF_HDROP transfers locations of a group of existing files. The array is fully qualified paths. report.pdf, hero.jpg, and notes.docx are three strings. Explorer paste copies three files. DragQueryFile is how a target reads the names, one index at a time. A correct target loops until the list ends. A sloppy target reads index 0 only.
Steps:
- Open the folder that contains them (or a search view that still offers HDROP — prefer the real folder).
- Ctrl+click each file. Shift+click for a contiguous range. Ctrl+A if the whole folder is the pack.
- Ctrl+C, or drag the selection.
- Paste or drop in the destination.
How to Copy Multiple Files and Paste Them Somewhere Else. How Windows File Drop Lists Actually Work. Can You Increase Windows Clipboard History Past 25? will not help; this is not a history feature.
A folder plus files in the same selection is also legal: the folder is one path. Paste copies the folder tree and the sibling files. Copying a Folder to the Clipboard: What Gets Stored.
Enable history if you also copy names and ticket IDs as text. That does not create a mixed-file card. Win+V > Turn on, or Settings > System > Clipboard.
No: as a single preview
There is no standard clipboard format that means “here is a PDF preview and a JPEG preview and a DOCX preview as one bitmap.” A target that wants pixels will not magically flatten three files. A target that wants one attachment may take the first path only.
| Destination | Mixed HDROP |
|---|---|
| Explorer folder | Copies every existing path |
| Outlook attach | Usually all files |
| Photoshop canvas | Often Place/open per file, or first file, or refuse — app-specific |
| Paint | Does not open three documents from HDROP |
| Win+V | Shows nothing for the files |
| Chat image box | May take images and ignore the PDF, or refuse the drop |
Multi-File Copy From Explorer: Why Tools Miss Files. Dragging PDFs From History Into Email.
The preview pane in Explorer shows the focused item even when three are selected. That is a viewing convenience, not a clipboard composite. File Explorer Preview vs Clipboard Preview.
Mixed in the sense of mixed payloads
A JPEG file, a snip that only exists as a bitmap, and a URL are not one HDROP.
- Save the snip as a file if it must join the pack. How to Copy an Image So Explorer Gets a File.
- Do not merge a URL with a zip and expect one honest drop. Merging Two Clipboard Items Into a Collection.
- Shortcuts (
.lnk) in the selection are shortcuts. Copying Shortcuts (.lnk) Versus Target Files.
“Mixed file types” in Explorer means mixed extensions. “Mixed clipboard types” means the user is trying to glue formats Microsoft keeps separate.
A browser Copy image plus an Explorer PDF is two operations. History might keep the image (if ≤ 4 MB) and will not keep the PDF. The live clipboard holds only the last operation.
Search results and libraries
A search that returns a PDF from Documents and a JPEG from a camera roll can still copy if Explorer provided HDROP. If paste fails, open each file’s parent folder. Virtual views may offer CFSTR_SHELLIDLIST (PIDLs). Microsoft Learn: file-system objects should still offer HDROP; if they do not, copy from the real path.
Libraries (Documents as a library, not the folder), Home, and Gallery views are convenience surfaces. Prefer the real directory when a mixed copy fails.
OneDrive Files On-Demand placeholders can appear in a mixed selection. A path exists; the bytes may not. Explorer paste to another local folder will download if the client can. A tool that only recorded the path and later tries to attach offline will fail. Hydrate first (right-click > Always keep on this device) when the pack must travel on a plane.
ZIP members that are not extracted are a mixed reliability problem, not a type problem. Copying From a ZIP Preview vs Extracting First.
What “no as a single preview” means in practice
People ask for one thumbnail that represents a PDF, a photo, and a Word file. That would require a compositor: render page one, a JPEG decode, and an Office preview, then blend them. Windows does not put that composite on the clipboard. Explorer’s preview pane shows one focused file even when three are selected. The other two are only highlighted in the list.
A shelf that draws three tiny icons on one card is a legend, not a preview of contents. That is enough to prevent attaching the wrong .lnk. It is not enough to proofread the PDF.
If the destination app shows only one file after a mixed drop:
- Confirm Explorer paste of the same HDROP still has three files. If yes, the destination is limited.
- If Explorer also has one, the tool that republished the list dropped names. Multi-File Copy From Explorer: Why Tools Miss Files.
- Attach the ignored types with the picker.
Some photo apps filter HDROP to image extensions and silently skip the PDF. That is a destination filter, not a Windows rule. The clipboard still held all three paths.
Blocked types (executables, scripts) may be stripped by Outlook or a browser even though HDROP listed them. That is security policy. Do not try to hide an .exe inside a mixed drop.
Gmail and many web apps accept a multi-file drop on the compose / upload well. They may still reject a file that exceeds plan size or a blocked MIME type. The other files can still attach. Read the error for the one that failed instead of recopying the whole set.
Staging a mixed pack
Use a staging folder or a zip when the set must survive other copies. Using the Clipboard as a Temporary File Staging Area. Dragging Several Files as One Stack.
A shelf card that shows three extension badges is a preview of names, not a substitute for Explorer’s preview pane.
Edge-Drop can keep a mixed file stack visible for one drag-out. It cannot make Win+V preview the PDF. Optional, not required.
If one destination wants only images and another wants the PDF, ungroup the stack and send twice. Forcing a photo app to swallow a contract PDF is how files disappear from the UI without leaving the clipboard.
Count the files in Details view before and after the drop. Three names out, three names in. If the count drops, the destination filtered by type. That is not Windows “forgetting” mixed selections.
Worked example: client handoff
- In
P:\Acme\out\, Ctrl+clickdeck.pptx,logo.png,msa.pdf. - Ctrl+C. Paste into
Documents\stage-acmeto make local copies. - Open the stage. Details view: three names, three honest sizes. No 2 KB “PDF.”
- Select all three. Drag onto Outlook. Three attachment chips.
- Slack wants only the PNG for the channel teaser. Drag just that file from the stage. The PPTX and PDF stay for email.
Nothing in that sequence used Win+V for files. History could still hold the client’s email address as text.
What will never work
- Asking Win+V to show three file previews from one Explorer copy.
- Asking Paint to open a mixed HDROP as three documents.
- Asking a bitmap paste to reconstruct a PDF.
- Raising the 25-item history cap so mixed files start appearing. They are the wrong format, not the wrong count.
