Can You Increase Windows Clipboard History Past 25?
The search is always the same: “increase clipboard history Windows.” The hoped-for answer is a hidden slider or a registry DWORD. Microsoft’s documented answer is 25 copied entries. This page is the official no, the reasons people think they found a yes, and the options that do not require unsupported edits.
What Microsoft documents
Support, “My clipboard items are disappearing from my clipboard history”:
Your clipboard history is limited to 25 copied entries. Older items—unless they're pinned—are removed automatically to make room for new clipboard items.
The same article: 4 MB per item; formats text, HTML, bitmap; unpinned list cleared on restart; enable via Win+V or Settings > System > Clipboard.
The Settings page exposes On/Off, device sync, Suggested actions, and Clear. It does not expose a maximum-count field. The keyboard article notes history is off by default. None of these pages mention a supported way to change 25.
That is the entire official surface. Windows Clipboard History Limit: Why Only 25 Items. Win+V on Windows 11 in 2026: What Still Has Not Changed.
What is not an official yes
Registry posts. Microsoft Q&A threads ask how to adjust the maximum count. Microsoft Support does not publish a consumer key for this. Treat blog “set this DWORD to 100” recipes as unsupported. They can break after a feature update, violate work policy, or do nothing. This site will not reprint them as steps.
Group Policy for consumers. There are administrative templates that *disable* clipboard history or cloud clipboard on managed PCs. That is the opposite direction. School and Work PCs: When Win+V Is Disabled.
Office Clipboard. Word/Excel can hold up to 24 Office clips in their own pane. That is not Win+V, and 24 is not larger than 25 in any useful way.
Pins. Pinning stops eviction of those cards. It does not add slots. Pin 25 items and the flexible queue is gone. Pinned Win+V Items Are Not a Real Library.
Sync. Device sync does not add capacity. It moves text between PCs. Automatically Sync Text I Copy: Should You Turn It On?.
Fast Startup. Hybrid shutdown can make history *look* like it survived when people expected a wipe. It does not add items. Clipboard History and Fast Startup: Odd Wipes Explained.
Confirm the 25 you already have are being used well
Before installing anything:
- Enable history. How to Enable Clipboard History in Windows 11.
- Stop pinning dead snippets.
- Save large screenshots as files so they stop failing the 4 MB rule and cluttering expectations. the 4 MB clipboard history cap.
- Accept that Explorer files will never occupy a slot. clipboard history is not a file library.
- Put durable notes in a document. History is a sitting buffer. Clipboard History Cleared After Restart? That Is Normal.
If the remaining pain is “I needed item 40 today,” the OS will not meet that request.
Why “I saw 30 items once” is usually a miscount
Pins plus a full unpinned queue still cap at 25. The Office pane can show another set of 24. A manager running beside Win+V can show 200. Three lists in one afternoon look like Windows grew. They did not. Close the manager and the Office launcher, then count Win+V only. Twenty-five is still the Microsoft number on that panel. Count the cards in that panel, not a feeling.
Real options
Stay at 25. Correct for most people. Teach Win+V, pin two lines, clear after secrets. Teach Clipboard History in Five Minutes.
Use a clipboard manager. This is the supported-by-the-vendor way to get 200 items, search, reboot-safe unpinned clips, or files. Capacity becomes that product’s setting, with that product’s privacy cost. How Many Items Should a Clipboard Remember?. Win+V vs a Clipboard Manager: Honest Split.
Examples, not a ranking: Ditto (tray history), CopyQ (scriptable), Edge Drop (hover shelf and drag-out). Read where each stores data. Do not run three at once.
Use the right non-clipboard tool. Snippets belong in a text expander or Word Quick Parts. Files belong in folders. Screenshots belong in Pictures\Screenshots. Passwords belong in a password manager.
What a manager cannot do
It cannot change Microsoft’s 25 inside Win+V. After install, Win+V is still 25. The manager is a second list. Decide which shortcut or hover edge is the daily UI so the two lists do not fight.
It cannot legally bypass a work policy that forbids clipboard utilities. If history is gray, ask IT before adding software that watches every copy.
Short answer to paste into a ticket
Windows clipboard history is documented at 25 items. There is no Settings control to raise it. Registry edits are not a Microsoft-supported method. Use pins only to protect a few cards, or install a dedicated manager if a longer local history is required.
