Windows Clipboard History Limit: Can You Go Past 25?

Windows clipboard history (Win+V) keeps up to 25 items, and you can't raise that number. Windows 10 and 11 have no setting for it, and Microsoft doesn't document any registry value or policy that changes it. When a 26th item arrives, the oldest unpinned item is removed. To keep more, pin the items that matter, store long-lived content somewhere else, or use a clipboard manager that lets you choose its history size.

The documented limits

Microsoft's clipboard support page sets out the rules:

Can you increase clipboard history past 25?

No. The Clipboard page in Settings > System > Clipboard offers on/off switches for history and sync and a Clear button, but no item count. Microsoft's documentation doesn't describe a registry value, Group Policy or command that changes the limit. Registry "tweaks" that circulate online aren't documented by Microsoft, and there's no way to confirm they do anything, so they're not worth the risk of editing the registry.

Two things that look like extra capacity aren't:

• Pinning protects an item from being removed; Microsoft doesn't describe it as adding room.
• The Office Clipboard in Word, Excel and other Microsoft 365 apps is a separate list of up to 24 items. It doesn't extend Win+V.

Why history often shows fewer than 25 items

If Win+V shows far fewer items than you copied, one of these is usually the reason:

• The PC restarted. Every unpinned item is cleared. Clipboard history cleared after a restart is expected behaviour.
• Items were over 4 MB. Large copies, such as big screenshots, still paste with Ctrl+V but aren't saved to history. Why your huge screenshot never appears in Win+V explains it.
• You copied files. File Explorer copies aren't a history format, so they never take a slot; see Windows clipboard history does not store files.
• The app excluded the copy. Apps can mark data to keep it out of history. Password managers commonly do this.
• History was off when you copied. Items copied before you turned it on aren't added later.

Has the limit changed in Windows 11?

No. As of October 2026, Microsoft's support page still lists the same 25-item, 4 MB, text-HTML-and-image rules, and the restart behaviour is unchanged. Windows 10 uses the same limits; it reached end of support on October 14, 2025.

The features around clipboard history have changed more than history itself. On Windows 11, Win+V shares a panel with the emoji picker, Snipping Tool gained text extraction, and the Suggested actions pop-up for copied phone numbers and dates has been deprecated. None of these affect the 25-item limit.

How to make 25 items go further

1. Pin what you reuse. Addresses, standard replies and reference numbers stay put after a restart. How to pin items in Windows clipboard history shows how.
2. Delete clutter. In Win+V, select See more next to an item and choose Delete, or use Clear all to remove everything except pins.
3. Save files and screenshots as files. They either don't fit in history or don't belong there.
4. Move long-term snippets out. Text you paste every day for months is better in a notes app or a text expander than in a 25-item list.

How long a history *should* be is partly a privacy question, because every extra item is something else stored on your PC; how many items should a clipboard remember? weighs it up.

Clipboard managers with larger histories

If you regularly need item 26 and beyond, a third-party clipboard manager is the supported way to get a bigger history. It runs alongside Windows' own history, which stays at 25.

FAQ

Do pinned items count towards the 25?

Microsoft doesn't say. It only states that pinned items aren't removed when older items make room for new ones, and that they survive a restart.

Is there a registry key to change the clipboard history limit?

Microsoft doesn't document one. Treat any registry value claiming to raise the limit as unsupported.

Does clipboard sync add more history?

No. Clipboard history across your devices shares copied text between PCs signed in to the same account. Each PC's history still holds up to 25 items.
