Does Windows 10 Still Have Clipboard History?
By Khushi Yadav
Yes. Remaining Windows 10 PCs still include clipboard history. Windows logo key + V still opens it. Microsoft’s “Using the clipboard” article still has a Windows 10 tab with the same core rules: turn on from Win+V, 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned list cleared on restart, pins kept, optional account-tied sync.
What ended on October 14, 2025 is mainstream support — free Windows Update quality and security fixes, and technical assistance — not the existence of Win+V. Microsoft’s end-of-support page is explicit: the PC still works; it is no longer a supported configuration for security updates (unless enrolled in Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027).
This guide is how to enable history on a leftover Windows 10 machine, what matches Windows 11, and why the habit should move with the OS.
Enable history on Windows 10
Microsoft Support (Windows 10 tab):
- Press Windows logo key + V.
- Select Turn on.
Or:
- Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Turn Clipboard history on.
Sync uses the older label Sync across devices on that tab. The Windows 11 label is Clipboard history across your devices. Both require the same Microsoft account or work account on each device. Automatic text upload is the privacy-sensitive option; leave it off unless required.
Clearing on Windows 10: Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear, or Win+V then ... > Clear all. Delete one item with ... > Delete. Those labels match Microsoft’s Windows 10 tab.

What is the same as Windows 11
| Rule | Windows 10 (Support tab) | Windows 11 (Support tab) |
|---|---|---|
| Off until enabled | Yes | Yes |
| Shortcut | Win+V | Win+V |
| Capacity | 25 copied entries | 25 copied entries |
| Size | 4 MB per item | 4 MB per item |
| Formats | Text, HTML, bitmap | Text, HTML, bitmap |
| Restart | Unpinned history cleared | Unpinned history cleared |
| Pins | Remain until deleted | Remain until deleted |
| Sync | Account-tied | Account-tied; Automatically sync text that I copy |
| Files in history | Not a listed type | Not a listed type |
File copy versus clipboard bytes is the same on both: Clipboard vs File Copy: Not the Same Operation.
What feels different
- Settings chrome. Windows 10 Settings is the older layout. The Clipboard page is still System > Clipboard.
- Clear all in the panel is documented via the ... menu on the Windows 10 tab; Windows 11 documents Clear all at the top of the panel.
- Suggested actions is a Windows 11-era extra. Do not expect that toggle on Windows 10.
- Snipping Tool on Windows 10 is the older tool in many images. Win+Shift+S still exists on current Windows 10 22H2. Text actions OCR is a Windows 11 Snipping Tool feature; do not assume it on Windows 10.
- Sync wording and the manual-versus-automatic text options are clearer on the Windows 11 Support tab.
The Win+V panel is still a history picker, not a live-clipboard inspector. That conceptual article is written for Windows 11 but the panel job is the same: What Win+V Actually Opens on Windows 11. Print Screen and Snipping Tool shortcuts also still fill the live clipboard on 22H2; they are not a reason to stay on Windows 10.
Day-one checklist on a leftover PC
- Confirm the edition: Settings > System > About. Clipboard history exists on consumer Windows 10 1809 and later; 22H2 is the current leftover branch.
- Press Win+V. Turn on if prompted.
- Copy
win10-history-okfrom Notepad and confirm it lists. - Turn Sync across devices off.
- Decide whether ESU is in place. Clipboard history is not a reason to skip security updates.
If Win+V never appeared on a very old 1511-era image, that PC is years past any supported clipboard feature set. Replace the OS; do not hunt ISO rumors.
Why “still have it” is not “still stay here”
Clipboard history does not receive standalone security servicing. It rides the OS. After October 14, 2025:
- Microsoft no longer provides free Windows 10 security updates (except ESU).
- The clipboard feature will not get new official consumer capabilities on Windows 10.
- Third-party managers that still install on Windows 10 may stop being tested.
Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 continue to run; Microsoft has published a separate, time-limited security-update story for those apps. That does not extend Windows 10 itself.
If the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements, Settings > Windows Update (on Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, or the end-of-support page’s Privacy and Security > Windows Update path for eligible upgrades) is the supported move. Clipboard pins do not migrate as a documented backup. Recopy important snippets after upgrade, or keep them in a file.
Enable it once, then migrate the habit
On a Windows 10 PC that must stay online for a while (ESU or isolated use):
- Turn history On.
- Leave Sync across devices Off.
- Pin only non-secret boilerplate.
- Do not treat the 25-item list as an archive.
- Plan the same Win+V muscle memory for Windows 11 — the shortcut does not change.

Syncing a Windows 10 PC with a Windows 11 PC
If both are signed into the same Microsoft account and both have history plus automatic text sync on, Microsoft’s model is that text can travel. A leftover Windows 10 laptop can therefore receive snippets copied on a new Windows 11 desktop.
That is convenient and easy to forget. A password copied on Windows 11 can appear on the unsupported Windows 10 machine. Turn automatic sync off unless both devices are equally trusted. History can stay on locally on each PC without the hop.
Do not treat this as a backup of pins. It is a live text channel, not a migration tool.
Third-party tools on leftover Windows 10
Older clipboard utilities written for Windows 7-era APIs may still run. They are not a reason to stay on an unsupported OS. Prefer moving to Windows 11, then choose a maintained tool only if 25 items, no files, and reboot wipe are genuine blockers. Edge-Drop is a Windows-focused optional shelf; it is not a Windows 10 support plan.
