How to Copy a Clean Link Without Tracking Parameters
By Khushi Yadav
A “link” on the clipboard is just text. Windows does not inspect utm_source or fbclid. Whatever the browser copies — including a 400-character tracking tail — is what Ctrl+V and Win+V will replay. Cleaning the URL is a browser or editing step, not a Clipboard settings toggle.
This guide covers manual cleanup, Firefox’s documented Copy Clean Link, Microsoft Edge’s link versus plain text paste (which is not a tracker stripper), and what not to expect from Windows history.
What a dirty URL looks like
Tracking parameters are extra query keys after ? or &:
https://example.com/article?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=june&fbclid=abc123
The durable part is usually:
https://example.com/article
Some sites require a query (?id=8821). Deleting every ? can break the page. Strip known marketing keys first; keep functional IDs.
Common marketing keys (not an official Microsoft list): utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term, fbclid, gclid, mc_cid, mc_eid. When unsure, open the shortened URL in a private window. If the article still loads, the tail was optional.
Method 1: Address bar, then edit
- Click the address bar (Ctrl+L in Edge, Chrome, Firefox).
- Ctrl+C.
- Paste into Notepad.
- Delete from the first unwanted
&utm_or?utm_onward, keeping requiredid=keys. - Copy the cleaned string.
This is the most reliable method because the address bar is the navigated URL, not a share wrapper. Some “Share” buttons copy a redirector (https://href.li/?...) instead of the article.
If history is on, both the dirty and clean copies occupy slots. Delete the dirty card: Win+V > ... > Delete. Enable history: How to Enable Clipboard History in Windows 11.
Method 2: Firefox Copy Clean Link
Mozilla documents Copy Clean Link in Enhanced Tracking Protection help: it strips tracking parameters from a copied URL.
From the address bar:
- Right-click the URL.
- Select Copy Clean Link.
- Paste.
From an in-page link, use the same menu item on the link. Mozilla states the feature is enabled to strip tracking parameters from copied URLs.
Confirmed: Firefox has this official command. Not claimed here: that Firefox’s list of stripped keys matches every vendor’s utm_ set, or that Microsoft Edge has the same menu. If a cleaned Firefox link still looks long, the remaining parameters may be functional or not yet in Firefox’s list.
Method 3: Microsoft Edge — link title versus plain URL
Microsoft documents Settings > Share, copy, and paste (or edge://settings/sharecopypaste) with Link (paste a hyperlinked title) versus Plain text (paste the web address). Ctrl+Shift+V can force the address in some apps.
That setting is about presentation, not tracker removal. A plain-text paste can still include utm_. Clean those by hand or in Notepad.
Edge’s right-click Copy link copies the href as the page authored it — often dirty. Prefer the address bar after navigation.
Method 4: Redirectors and “Share”
Email and social Share buttons often copy:
- A tracking redirect
- A wrapped
safe-linksor professional-link URL (common in Microsoft 365 mail)
For a citation, open the article, wait until the address bar shows the publisher’s host, then copy that. Do not copy the mail-protection wrapper if the reader will not be inside the same organization.
Spreadsheet and citation hygiene
Writers who paste URLs into a sources column should store the clean form. A cell full of utm_ strings is hard to read and changes analytics if someone later clicks it. After cleanup, paste with Ctrl+Shift+V or Excel’s match-destination options so a titled Edge “Link” paste does not become a styled hyperlink with a hidden dirty href.
For footnotes, prefer the publisher’s canonical URL from the address bar after the page has fully loaded. Some sites rewrite the bar on scroll; copy once the title is correct. If history is on, delete the dirty card so the next Win+V paste is not the long form. Pin only a clean, durable URL — never a session-specific redirect.
Method 5: Managers and extensions
Some clipboard managers can run a “strip utm_” rule on copy. That is optional automation, not a Windows feature. Browser extensions labeled “copy clean link” do the same inside the browser. Review their permissions; a link-rewriting extension sees every URL.
Edge-Drop does not replace URL hygiene. Use it only if the job is staging many already-clean strings. Built-in history will store the clean text like any other snippet.
Worked examples
Newsletter link
https://shop.example.com/p/22?utm_source=news&utm_medium=email
Keep https://shop.example.com/p/22. The p/22 segment is the product. The utm_ keys are campaign analytics.
Search result
https://www.example.com/article?utm_source=bing after a click-through may already be clean in the address bar. Copy after navigation, not from the SERP’s redirect href.
Microsoft 365 Safe Links
A wrapped https://*.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=... is a mail-security wrapper. Recipients outside the tenant may still open it, but a public citation should use the decoded inner url= value. Decode carefully; do not “clean” by deleting the only copy of the real host.
When the inner URL itself has utm_ keys, strip those after decoding.
Windows will not help, and that is fine
| Windows control | Effect on trackers |
|---|---|
| Clipboard history | Stores the string as copied |
| Automatically sync text | Can upload the dirty URL to other devices |
| Suggested actions | May treat a URL as a thing to open; does not strip |
| Ctrl+Shift+V | Drops HTML; keeps the characters of the URL |
Leave sync off if internal query strings should stay on one PC.
Right-click versus Ctrl+C can change whether HTML wraps the URL. That is Right-Click Copy vs Ctrl+C: Is There a Difference?.
What not to strip
- Share tokens that *are* the access key (
?token=on a private file). Removing them 404s the link. - Locale (
?hl=en) if the page has no other language switch. - Revision IDs on docs (
?revision=12) when citing a specific version. - YouTube timestamps (
&t=93s) when the point of the link is that moment.
When a colleague says a “cleaned” link is dead, the cleanup deleted a functional key. Compare with the original address-bar URL before sending a correction.
A short cleanup checklist
- Navigate to the real page.
- Ctrl+L, Ctrl+C.
- Paste into Notepad.
- Remove
utm_*,fbclid,gclid, and similar. - Keep
id,p,v, or other keys the page needs. - Copy the result once.
- Delete the dirty history card if it exists.
For URLs recovered from a screenshot, OCR first: How to Copy Text Out of an Image on Windows, then apply the same cleanup.
