ClipX in 2026: Is ClipX 2.0 Safe on Windows 11?

Yes, if you install ClipX 2.0 from its official site, clipx.org. ClipX was revived in 2026: its original author, Francis Gastellu, released version 2.0.0.0 on August 16, 2026 and 2.0.0.1 two days later, with support for Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 SP1. Avoid the old 1.x builds (last updated in 2005 and 2008), which the author now labels unsupported, and avoid copies from download mirrors.

Older articles, including Wikipedia's ClipX page at the time of writing, still describe ClipX as no longer supported. That was true for years, but it's out of date.

ClipX 1.x vs ClipX 2.0

The old project address, bluemars.org/clipx, now redirects to clipx.org, and the site's FAQ says ClipX was not sold and is still made by the same person.

Is ClipX safe to install?

ClipX 2.0 is a reasonable choice if you take a few precautions. Any clipboard manager sees everything you copy, so the source and the settings matter.

1. Download only from clipx.org. The ClipX FAQ says the installer isn't code-signed, so Chrome and Windows SmartScreen may warn you. The author's advice is to continue only if you downloaded it from clipx.org, and not to run copies from anywhere else.
2. Choose 2.0, not Legacy. The Legacy page itself says 1.x hasn't been updated since 2008 and officially supports only XP and Vista.
3. Review Settings > Security & Privacy. ClipX 2.0 can detect sensitive content such as passwords, credit card numbers and API keys and keep it out of history. The 2.0.1.0 beta also documents that ClipX respects the "do not record" flag that some apps, such as password managers and Chrome Guest or Incognito windows, put on the clipboard, with an override that the author recommends against using.
4. Decide where history lives. You can store history on disk, in transient storage, or fully in memory, purge entries older than a set age, and clear everything when the PC locks.
5. Know what goes online. The privacy page says the only network request ClipX itself makes is an optional update check, which you can decline at install or turn off later. The Sharing and MCP plugins add their own network or local-server features only if you install them.
6. Remember it's a solo project. One developer maintains it. That's normal for small utilities, but plan for what happens if updates stop; see what happens to your clips if a solo app goes quiet.

What ClipX 2.0 does

ClipX is still a small tray utility at heart: it records what you copy, and you restore an earlier clip from the tray icon or paste it into your editor with a hotkey. The 2.0 changelog adds:

• Modern look: Windows 11-style popup menus with light, dark and translucent modes, with the classic look still available.
• Every clipboard format: formatted text, images, files and app-specific formats are recorded and restored as copied. Shift+Enter or Shift+Click pastes plain text.
• Search and manage: one window to search with regex, whole-word or case-insensitive filters, reorder, bulk delete and combine clips.
• Hotkeys: conflict detection, and low-level hotkeys that can use Win+V on Windows 11 if you want ClipX to replace the built-in panel.
• Screen-capture privacy: ClipX windows can be hidden from screenshots and screen sharing (off by default, because it doesn't work with remote desktop tools).
• Optional plugins from a built-in browser: Stickies (saved snippets), Snip (screenshots with annotations), More Formats, Save to Disk, Actions, Color Picker, Sharing (between your machines without a cloud service), Limits, and MCP (a local-only server for AI assistants).

ClipX's licence allows free personal and commercial use on any number of computers.

Upgrading from ClipX 1.x

1. Download the ClipX 2.0 installer from clipx.org. The FAQ says the old 1.x auto-updater fails on modern Windows, so a one-time manual install is needed.
2. Run the installer. Later 2.x updates install themselves after you approve them.
3. Check your plugins. SmartNavigate is now Actions, and the Disklog plugin was removed because it could be abused to record clipboard data silently.
4. Open Settings and set the privacy options described above.
5. If you've used ClipX 1.x for years, consider changing any passwords you copied while it was running, since 1.x had no sensitive-content filtering.

Edge Drop, made by the team behind this site, is a shelf that slides out when your cursor touches the left, right or top edge of the screen, or when you press Alt+C.
