Edge-Drop vs CopyQ: Drag Shelf vs Scriptable Clipboard
CopyQ and Edge-Drop will both sit in a "clipboard manager" comparison table. Power users will notice a lie in the first paragraph if the table pretends they compete for the same slot.
CopyQ is a scriptable clipboard workstation. The official site describes an advanced manager with editing and scripting: tabs of stored clips, notes and tags, system-wide shortcuts, a command dialog, ignore rules, a Vim-like editor, and a CLI that talks to the running app. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
Edge-Drop is a Windows hover shelf. It watches the clipboard, shows cards, and drags text, images, and file stacks into other desktop apps with native OLE handles. It does not expose a command language.
Automate the clipboard with CopyQ. Stage visible assets with a shelf. Using either as a substitute for the other is how people write angry reviews.
The Windows floor
Microsoft clipboard history remains the correct first tool. Win+V after history is on: 25 items, 4 MB each, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart, optional text sync. Files are not a history type. There is no scripting API for consumers.
If the need is "paste the link from two copies ago," stay on Win+V. CopyQ is wasted. Edge-Drop is wasted.
If the need is "when I copy from Chrome, strip tracking parameters and tag the item," CopyQ is in the room. If the need is "drop yesterday's three PNGs into this Word doc," the shelf is in the room.
What CopyQ documents
From hluk.github.io/CopyQ and the GitHub repo:
- Store text, HTML, images, or custom formats.
- Browse and filter history; sort, edit, remove, copy, paste, drag and drop items inside tabs.
- Notes and tags on items.
- Custom commands (F6) with shortcuts, including paste-on-clipboard-change recipes.
- Ignore copies from some windows or matching some text.
- Advanced CLI:
copyq add, copyq read, copyq clipboard, copyq copy, writing images from files. - Appearance customization.
- Windows install via GitHub installer, portable zip, Scoop, Chocolatey.
CopyQ's drag-and-drop is real, and it is not the same promise as a dedicated OLE shelf aimed at Photoshop and Explorer. CopyQ is a manager window with items you can rearrange. Edge-Drop is an always-available blade whose main gesture is drag-*out* to a foreign app.
CopyQ will happily become a second desktop if the user creates twelve tabs and fifty commands. That is a feature for people who want a programmable inbox. It is a second job for everyone else.
What Edge-Drop documents
- Hover to open; click-through when closed.
- Text, links, images, multi-file HDROP captures.
- Native drag-out to desktop apps.
- Bundles that merge, split, and expand.
- Type filters, pins, optional auto-delete, incognito pause.
- Local only. Not a sync product, not a capture tool, not an expander.
- Electron RAM roughly 130–160 MB in project notes.
There is no edgedrop add CLI. There is no command dialog. There is no "run this script when the clipboard matches a regex." Asking for those is asking Edge-Drop to become CopyQ.
Side-by-side
| Need | CopyQ | Edge-Drop | Win+V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Script on copy | Yes (commands + CLI) | No | No |
| Tabs / inbox | Yes | No | No |
| Ignore window / regex | Yes | Password-manager flags, incognito | No |
| Edit clip in place | Yes (F2, editors) | Preview and paste, not a full editor | No |
| Visual file staging | Secondary | Primary | No |
| Native drag into PS / Explorer | Possible, not the UX | Primary | Last live copy only |
| Cross-platform | Win / Linux / macOS | Windows-focused | Windows |
| Keyboard-first | Yes | Pointer-first | Mixed |
| Learning curve | Steep if scripted | Low if the user only hovers | Lowest |
| Weight | Qt native, moderate | Electron, heavier | OS |
Pick CopyQ to automate
Typical CopyQ jobs that Edge-Drop will not take:
- Convert every copied path to POSIX slashes.
- Drop copies from a password manager or a Teams window.
- Keep a "Tickets" tab and a "Images" tab by rule.
- Pipe the current clipboard into a script from a build step (
copyq clipboard). - Edit a stored HTML fragment before paste.
- Bind a global shortcut that pastes item 3 as plain text.
Developers who already live in terminals will treat CopyQ as infrastructure. That is correct. They should not expect the main window to feel like a Mac-style visual clipboard.
CopyQ also wins if the same brain uses Linux at home and Windows at work. Edge-Drop is not that bridge.
Pick a shelf to stage files and images
Typical Edge-Drop jobs that CopyQ will not feel like:
- Collect four screenshots and a PDF, then drag the stack into Slack.
- Keep images visible as cards without opening a Qt main window.
- Hover the left edge during a design review and pull the last bitmap into the canvas.
- Merge two accidental copies into one bundle, then split one file back out.
CopyQ can store those bytes. The muscle memory is still "open manager, find item, paste." The shelf's muscle memory is "the things are already there, drag them."
If the user never drags and never looks at thumbnails, Edge-Drop is the wrong install.
RAM, startup, and honesty
CopyQ is a Qt application. It is not as tiny as Ditto. It is still lighter than a Chromium shell. People who measure idle working sets will prefer CopyQ (or Ditto) over Edge-Drop. That is a fair reason to skip the shelf.
Edge-Drop's weight is the cost of a continuously present, animated, thumbnail-rich blade plus native drag plumbing. If that surface is unused, the RAM is wasted. If that surface is the product, comparing it to CopyQ's idle megabytes is the wrong metric — compare time-to-drop into Photoshop instead.
Privacy
Both persist more than Win+V's 25-item, reboot-wiped list.
CopyQ's ignore rules are the stronger technical control: exclude a window title or a text pattern. Use them. Edge-Drop's incognito toggle and password-manager format skips are a lighter control. Neither is a reason to copy production secrets "because history is convenient."
Neither should be paired with Microsoft Automatically sync text that I copy on a machine that also holds client data. Sync is a separate pipe.
Do not run both as watchers
Two clipboard listeners will duplicate, reorder, or surprise. If a developer needs CopyQ scripts *and* a visual shelf, decide which process is allowed to *capture*. The other becomes a manual drop target or stays closed. Test that arrangement for a day before leaving it on a work PC.
Decision
- Win+V — light text, one session, no files.
- CopyQ — automate, tab, ignore, CLI, cross-platform.
- Ditto — search without CopyQ's complexity (Edge-Drop vs Ditto).
- Edge-Drop — see and drag files and images on Windows.
- ClipboardFusion — vendor C# macros and optional cloud, not OSS scripts (CopyQ vs ClipboardFusion).
A clean test: write one command you wish ran on every copy. If that sentence is easy to write, install CopyQ and use the command dialog. If the sentence is "I wish I could grab that PNG without opening a window," install the shelf. If neither sentence exists, stay on Win+V.
The product-level comparison is when built-in history is enough.
