CopyQ vs ClipboardFusion: Which Automates Copying Better?

Choose CopyQ if you're comfortable writing small scripts and want a free, open-source clipboard manager with a command-line interface that also runs on Linux and macOS. Choose ClipboardFusion if you'd rather build rules from menus, want ready-made cleanup actions such as stripping HTML, or need to sync clipboard text to other devices, which requires its paid Pro edition. Both keep a full clipboard history; the real difference is how you automate it.

How CopyQ automates the clipboard

CopyQ stores text, HTML, images and custom formats in tabs, and everything it does can be driven by commands. Press F6 (or File > Commands/Global Shortcuts) to open the Command dialog. A command can run from a global shortcut, from the item menu, or automatically: with Automatic ticked, it runs whenever the clipboard changes.

Automatic commands can be limited to copies that match:

• Content: a regular expression tested against the copied text, such as ^https?:// for web addresses.
• Window: a regular expression tested against the active window's title.
• Format: a specific clipboard data type.

The same functions are available from the command line, which makes CopyQ useful in scripts and terminals. For example, copyq read 0 prints the newest item in history, copyq add "some text" adds an item, and copyq clipboard prints the current clipboard text.

CopyQ is also strong on privacy defaults. Its security documentation says it sends nothing over the network, and that it silently ignores clipboard content that apps mark as secret, including Windows' ExcludeClipboardContentFromMonitorProcessing and CanIncludeInClipboardHistory formats. History is stored unencrypted unless you turn on its encryption option.

A working CopyQ rule: ignore copies from one app

CopyQ already skips copies that password managers flag as secret. For an app that doesn't flag them, add a rule:

1. Press F6 and choose Add, then New Command.
2. Name it, for example "Ignore banking app".
3. Tick Automatic.
4. In Window, enter a regular expression that matches the app's window title.
5. In Command, enter copyq: ignore().
6. Click OK.

CopyQ's scripting reference describes ignore() as ignoring the current clipboard content for automatic commands, so matching copies never reach your history.

How ClipboardFusion automates the clipboard

ClipboardFusion from Binary Fortress is built around triggers: rules that react to an event, check conditions, and run actions. You build them from menus under Settings > Triggers (Scrub/Replace).

• Events include a trigger command (copying, or copying twice), clipboard changed, ClipboardFusion start and exit, desktop locked and unlocked, a timer, and a window gaining focus.
• Match conditions include clipboard text, process filename, process command-line parameters, window text and window class.
• Actions include scrubbing text, text replacement, removing non-text formats, setting output text, notifications, waiting, running a hotkey and running a macro.

For anything the built-in actions can't do, macros are written in C# or Visual Basic in ClipboardFusion's integrated editor.

The free edition already includes clipboard history, local pins, image storage, custom-code macros, ignoring specified applications, and triggers that strip whitespace, strip HTML tags, match and replace text, or remove non-text formats. Pro adds the automatic events (clipboard changed, timer, lock and unlock, window focus, app start and exit), running a hotkey or macro from a trigger, and clipboard syncing with other computers and the iOS, Android, macOS and browser apps.

A working ClipboardFusion rule: plain text from your browser

This version works in the free edition, using a double-copy so you choose when it runs:

1. Right-click the ClipboardFusion tray icon and open Settings, then the Triggers (Scrub/Replace) tab.
2. Click Add and choose Trigger.
3. Set Event to Trigger Command Received.
4. Enable a matching condition on Process Filename and enter your browser's file name, such as msedge.exe or chrome.exe.
5. Under Actions, click Add, choose Remove Non-Text Formats, and click OK.
6. Click OK, then Apply.
7. Set the trigger command setting to Run Triggers on double-copy.

Now pressing Ctrl+C twice in the browser leaves only plain text on the clipboard. With Pro, you can set the event to Clipboard Changed to clean every copy automatically.

Which should you choose?

Don't run both at once. Two tools rewriting the same clipboard can react to each other's changes, and both will store every copy.

Sync and privacy

ClipboardFusion Pro syncs clipboard text through a Binary Fortress account, so synced items pass through the vendor's online service.
