Edge Drop vs ArsClip: Hover Shelf or Classic Popup?

ArsClip is a long-running freeware clipboard manager that pastes from a popup you trigger with a hotkey, and it has deep options, permanent clips and copy-and-paste automation. Edge Drop is a screen-edge shelf that shows recent copies as cards you click to paste or drag into other apps. If you want a keyboard popup you can tune in detail, and reusable clips with macros, stay with ArsClip. If you mostly reuse screenshots and files and want to drag them, Edge Drop fits better.

ArsClip is published by JoeJoe on joejoesoft.com. Its page describes a freeware utility that monitors the clipboard, keeps track of entries, and now specialises in copy-and-paste automation. Version 5.46 was released in June 2026.

• A popup you can summon several ways. Pasting happens from a triggered popup window, opened by a hotkey, by holding the right mouse button, through a trigger window, or other methods.
• Permanent Clips and macros. Clips you reuse live outside the rolling history, and they can carry macros for automating copy-and-paste tasks.
• Global Clipboard. An optional feature shares clips with your other Windows and Android devices.
• Broad format support. Pictures, rich text, file copies, Unicode and HTML.
• No installation required. It can run without being installed, with an optional setup program, which suits USB sticks and locked-down PCs.
• High configurability. Popup placement, triggers and behaviour can be adjusted extensively.

The trade-off is the learning curve. ArsClip rewards an evening of setting it up; a new user faces a long options list. The author's page lists Windows XP to Windows 10 as supported, so check it on your version of Windows 11 before relying on it. What Edge Drop does well

Edge Drop is built for the mouse. It stays hidden until the cursor touches the screen edge you choose, then shows your recent copies as cards.

• See it, drag it. Drag an image or file out of Edge Drop into Explorer, Slack, Word, Photoshop or a browser upload box. Screenshots are easier to recognise as thumbnails than as rows in a list.
• Explorer files stay available. A file copy stays on the shelf as a file card after the clipboard has moved on.
• Stacks. Group up to 10 images or files by dropping one card onto another, and drag them as a set.
• Click to paste into the app you were using; the shelf doesn't take focus.

Edge Drop has no macros, no text automation, no device sharing and no portable build. Text and link cards are click-to-paste only.

Permanent clips, pins and snippet tools

Three different things often get mixed up:

1. Pins (in Win+V or Edge Drop) keep an item from being removed. They're handy for a few items but aren't a filing system.
2. ArsClip's Permanent Clips are a library of reusable clips, with macros for automating what gets pasted.

If you've built a large set of ArsClip Permanent Clips, moving to Edge Drop means losing that structure: Edge Drop can pin cards, but it has no folders, macros or import. Keep reusable text in ArsClip or an expander, and use a shelf only for recent images and files.

Privacy

• ArsClip keeps history locally. Its Global Clipboard sends clips to your other devices when you turn it on, so leave it off on PCs that handle sensitive data.
• Edge Drop never sends history anywhere. It skips content that apps mark as excluded from clipboard history and known password-manager formats, offers Incognito mode to pause capture, and can delete unpinned items automatically after 1 hour to 7 days.

Which should you pick?

If you're switching away from ArsClip, back up its data first. Its help pages recommend using the built-in backup to make a ZIP archive of the program and its data. Then run only one clipboard manager at a time so you don't end up with two histories; two clipboard managers fighting each other shows what goes wrong otherwise.
