ArsClip vs Ditto: Config Depth vs Simplicity
ArsClip and Ditto are the two veteran freeware names that still show up when someone refuses to pay Binary Fortress and refuses to learn CopyQ. Both watch the Windows clipboard. Both paste from a popup. In 2026 they still disagree about how much configuration is a feature.
Ditto’s win condition is a default that works. ArsClip’s win condition is a popup that can be taught to automate a desk.
What ArsClip is in 2026
JoeJoe’s ArsClip is a freeware clipboard manager. No install required (optional setup exists). Source is included (Delphi). The author was still shipping versions in 2026 — v5.46 notes are dated June 2026 on the product page.
Vendor-stated capabilities:
- History popup triggered by hotkey, holding right-click, a trigger window, and other methods
- Permanent clips / macros for paste automation
- Picture, Rich Text, file copy, Unicode, HTML
- High configurability
- Optional clipboard bar
- Optional “Global Clipboard” to share clips with other Windows and Android devices
- Jump lists on older Windows; the page still lists “Windows XP through Windows 10” as the support line even while 5.4x builds continue
That last bullet is the honest caveat. ArsClip is alive. Its marketing page has not been rewritten as a Windows 11 product site. Test on 11 before betting a workflow.
What Ditto is
Open-source Windows clipboard extension. Local database. Search. Default Ctrl+\`. Local first: no login, no cloud, no telemetry. Installer, portable, winget. UI that has looked the same for years on purpose.
Depth versus defaults
| Axis | ArsClip | Ditto |
|---|---|---|
| First hour | “Configuration” is a place | Copy, press Ctrl+\`, paste |
| Permanent clips / macros | Central | Lighter favorites |
| Popup triggers | Hotkey, right-click hold, trigger window, tray, more | Hotkey / tray |
| Search | Present; popup-oriented | First-class |
| File / HTML / picture | Yes | Yes |
| Cross-device | Optional Global Clipboard (Windows/Android) | Optional network share if configured; no consumer cloud |
| Source | Delphi source included | GitHub C++ / community |
| Packaging | Zip / optional setup | Installer, portable, winget, Store listing |
| Win11 polish | Works for many; page still says XP–10 | Clearly used on 10/11 |
| RAM | Typically tiny | Typically tiny |
| Who gets lost | People who open every option | People who wanted macros |
ArsClip’s changelog reads like a power-user diary: JavaScript in permanent clips, clip menu scripts, paste-selected modes, per-program paste methods, “mimic typing” for consoles. That density is the product. It is also why a new user closes the zip.
Permanent clips are not Win+V pins
Windows pins are sticky history cards. They vanish in some feature updates and cannot run logic. Pinned Win+V Items Are Not a Real Library
ArsClip permanent clips are a snippet + automation system: paste this, send these keys, run this small script, show this submenu, switch group per application. That is closer to PhraseExpress than to Win+V. If the job is typed boilerplate, a dedicated expander may still be cleaner. If the job is “right-click-hold, pick a clip, optionally run a macro,” ArsClip is in its lane.
Ditto can store favorites. It does not try to be a macro host. ClipboardFusion and CopyQ are the other macro hosts, with more modern packaging.
Who should pick ArsClip
- The user already thinks in “permanent groups per program”
- Right-click-hold or a trigger window beats a Win+V-style overlay
- JavaScript-tinged clips sound fun, not frightening
- RAM must stay tiny and the UI may look like 2008
- Freeware with included source is a plus
Who should not:
- Anyone still deciding whether they need *any* manager — start with Win+V, then Ditto
- Anyone who wanted a pretty Store app — look at Pasteboard
- Anyone who wanted documented CLI/scripts on Linux — CopyQ
- Anyone who wanted a hover file shelf — Edge-Drop
- IT images that only allow signed Store / winget packages (Ditto is easier to justify)
Who should pick Ditto
The default third-party choice on Windows.
- Search is the job
- Defaults should be correct
- winget / Store / Chocolatey is how software arrives
- Local-first with no “Global Clipboard” temptation
ArsClip’s optional Global Clipboard is a feature and a decision. Ditto’s network options exist for people who go looking. Most Ditto users never turn them on. That is a simplicity win.
Config depth has a failure mode
Every extra checkbox is a way to break paste in one app (especially Office, consoles, and elevated windows). ArsClip’s own history of fixes is full of paste-method edge cases. That is what a 20-year popup manager looks like.
Ditto has edge cases too. It just exposes fewer knobs on day one, so fewer people walk into them.
If a desk already has a working ArsClip.ini from 2014, do not migrate to Ditto for sport. The switching cost is the configured macros. Stay.
If a desk is new in 2026, do not pick ArsClip because it has more settings. More settings are not a score.
How this pair sits next to 2026 alternatives
- Win+V — 25 items, reboot wipe. Both veterans exist because of those limits.
- CopyQ — if the depth you want is *scripts*, not popup placement.
- ClipboardFusion — if the depth you want is *triggers + vendor + optional cloud*.
- Clipdiary — if the depth you want is *years of log*.
- Pasteboard — if the complaint about Ditto is “it looks old” and macros are unwanted. Next article in the cluster: Pasteboard vs Ditto.
- Edge-Drop — if the complaint is the popup itself.
ArsClip can still surprise people who think freeware froze in 2012. It did not. It also did not become Ditto.
Right-click-hold is a different ergonomic bet
Ditto and Win+V assume a keyboard chord. ArsClip’s right-click-hold and trigger window assume the mouse is already down. On a laptop trackpad that can be kinder than Win+V and kinder than Ctrl+\`. It can also fire accidentally in apps that use a held right-click for their own pan or brush.
If the bake-off fails because the popup appears during Photoshop, turn that trigger off. Depth includes the ability to disable itself.
A short bake-off
- Use Win+V for a day. If that is enough, stop.
- Install Ditto. If search + reboot survival ends the pain, stop.
- Only if a permanent-clip / right-click-hold / per-app paste method is the remaining pain, try ArsClip’s zip portable-style for a week on Windows 11.
- Keep one watcher. Turn Windows history off when the chosen tool is trusted.
Config depth is a tool. Simplicity is a tool. The veteran mistake is treating them as ranks.
