Best Clipboard Manager for Mouse Users on Windows

If you'd rather use the mouse than shortcuts, the best fit is a clipboard manager you can open, paste from and drag out of without touching the keyboard. Edge Drop is designed for that: it opens when you push the pointer to a screen edge, pastes when you click a card, and lets you drag images and files into other apps. If you mostly reuse text, Ditto and CopyQ both open from a tray-icon click, and Windows 11's own clipboard history can be opened from a taskbar icon.

How each one works with a mouse

Windows clipboard history: fine for a few text clips

Clipboard history is built in, and the panel is entirely clickable. To open it without Win+V, recent Windows 11 updates add an Emoji and more icon near the clock; click it and switch to the clipboard tab. On a tablet, the touch keyboard has the same tab. It holds 25 items of text, HTML or images, clears unpinned items on restart, and doesn't keep files or let you drag anything out. For a handful of text snippets a day, that's enough.

Ditto: keyboard-first, but usable by mouse

Ditto opens when you click its tray icon, and you paste a clip by double-clicking it. Its wiki shows how to change that to a single click: Options > Quick Paste Keyboard, select Paste Selected, and assign Click in place of Double Click. Its project page also lists drag and drop as a way to use a clip.

Ditto's real strength is typing to search a long history, which is a keyboard habit. If you'll mostly scroll rather than search, a visual tool may suit you better. Edge Drop vs Ditto compares the two directly.

CopyQ: tray menu and tabs

Clicking CopyQ's tray icon opens its history. Its tray menu lists recent items; choosing one copies it to the clipboard, and a tray setting can paste the chosen item straight into the current window. You can drag items between tabs to organise them. CopyQ's depth (scripts, commands, rules) is mostly reached through menus and settings rather than shortcuts, but it takes setting up.

Edge Drop: built for the pointer

Edge Drop is a shelf that slides out from the left edge of your screen (the default), the right edge or the top. Rest the pointer on the edge and it opens after a 40 ms pause; move away and it closes.

• Click a card to paste it into the app you were using. The shelf doesn't take focus from that app. How click-to-paste works explains the details.
• Drag an image or file card into Explorer, an email, Slack or a design app; it arrives as a real file. Text and link cards are click-to-paste only.
• Filter tabs (All, Text, Links, Images, Files, Colors) narrow the shelf with a click.
• Left-click the tray icon to open or close it, or press Alt+C (the default shortcut) if your hand is already on the keyboard.

Setting Edge Drop up for the mouse

Right-click the tray icon and choose Settings, then open the Position tab.

1. Edge Placement: pick Left Edge, Top Edge or Right Edge. Choose the edge your pointer travels to least by accident, such as the one away from scroll bars you use. Left edge or right edge for a clipboard shelf? weighs the options.
2. Display Screen: on several monitors, choose the one where you do most pasting.
3. Hover area size and Edge trigger position: control how much of the edge triggers the shelf and where along it. Smaller areas mean fewer accidental opens.

The 40 ms pause before opening is fixed; there's no hover-delay setting. If the shelf opens when you don't want it, shrink the hover area, move it to another edge, or turn Hover Activation off on the Behaviour tab and open it from the tray icon instead. Which one to pick

• A few text clips a day: Win+V, opened from the taskbar icon.
• Lots of text, and you don't mind typing to search: Ditto with single-click paste.
• You want rules and scripting: CopyQ.

Can I use a clipboard manager without any keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Win+V can be opened from the taskbar on Windows 11, Ditto and CopyQ from their tray icons, and Edge Drop by moving the pointer to a screen edge. Pasting is a click in all four.

Which clipboard manager lets me drag files out?
