• Already moving between Photoshop, a browser, and Explorer.

• A shelf on the monitor edge matches the hand that is already on the mouse.
• Extra chords are forgotten; hover is not.

Mouse-first setup (small)

1. Leave Win+V on as a fallback for text. You will still hit it by accident; that is fine.
2. Install one file-aware shelf. Hover on the right edge if you are right-handed and the taskbar is at the bottom; pick the monitor you actually design on.
3. Turn hover off only if you fight the taskbar or a game. Then you are back to a hotkey — at that point admit you might be a keyboard user.
4. Run the drag test: PNG + PDF from the shelf into Explorer. If it fails, the app is paste-only for your hand.
5. Do not install Ditto at the same time “just in case.” Pause it for a week. If you miss search, you were the keyboard persona.
6. Turn Clipboard history across your devices Off unless you want Microsoft to upload text. Phone hops are a share tool, not a mouse setup.

ClipShelf-style taskbar strips are also mouse-visible; they may be shortcut-numbered rather than OLE. Notch/island apps may look mouse-friendly and still fail the Explorer drop. Verify. Notchify press mentioned a built-in clipboard; that is not proof of drag.

When Edge Drop fits — and when it does not

Fits when the pointer is already moving, you stage files and screenshots, and you want the history on the bezel you already shove the cursor into. Hover is the product. Alt+C is backup.

Does not fit when you live on the keyboard, when accidental hover fights a canvas edge or a game, when RAM is a veto, or when Win+V’s 25 text/HTML/bitmap cards already cover the day. It does not restore Microsoft’s phone Drop thread. It does not capture the screen (ShareX). It does not expand snippets (Espanso).

Tablet mode and a finger on the bezel will false-open hover. Turn hover off; at that point you are not the mouse-on-desktop persona.

Multi-monitor mouse paths

Put the shelf on the monitor where the destination lives, not the monitor where Explorer lives. The mouse should drag a short distance. On an ultrawide, a center popup (Win+V) is a hike; an edge you already shove the pointer into is not. Placement detail: multi-monitor clipboard shelves.

Laptop + HDMI: when you undock, the shelf should follow the remaining display. If it opens on a ghost monitor, you will fall back to hotkeys and decide you hate shelves. Pick the display in settings after you dock.

Left-handed: left edge. Taskbar on the left: pick the other edge or you will fight Start.

Accidental hover and how to live with it

Mouse users will open the shelf while aiming at a scrollbar on the far edge. Turn dwell up, shrink the hot zone, or stick the shelf on the edge you do not use for scroll. That is setup, not a reason to return to a 15-app list.

If accidental opens still happen in one title (a map editor, a brush at the canvas edge), hover-off for that session. You are not converting to the keyboard persona; you are avoiding a fight with that app.

Games: hide in exclusive fullscreen or quit the shelf. Mouse-first does not mean “overlay everywhere.” Fullscreen games.

Pen tablets: the pointer still hits the bezel. If a stylus parks on the edge, hover will open. Move the shelf to the opposite edge from the tablet’s rest position, or use the hotkey for tablet hours.

Trackpads on laptops make edge hover easier to trigger than a mouse on a desk. If a palm hits the right bezel while typing, shrink the zone or use the opposite edge. Keyboard users who only wanted Win+V should not install a shelf to “see if the mouse likes it” and then run both watchers.

What not to do (still not a roundup)

• Do not rank ten Store apps with stars.
• Do not enable clipboard sync because the mouse setup “should include the phone.”
• Do not put passwords on the strip you are about to hover open over a screen-share. Secrets.
• Do not treat ShareX as the clipboard. Capture, then stage. Pairing.
• Do not install a paid island dock only for clipboard if you never wanted media widgets. Free island-style options.

When Win+V is the mouse-friendly built-in

The Win+V panel is clickable. For three text clips it is enough. It fails the mouse persona when the thing under the cursor needs to be a file or a stack you can drag without copying again. That is the whole article.
