Edge Drop Click-to-Paste: Paste Without Losing Focus

In Edge Drop, clicking a card pastes it into the app you were using: the shelf closes, the item goes onto the clipboard, and Edge Drop presses Ctrl+V for you. Your cursor stays where it was, because the shelf never takes keyboard focus from that app, even when you click it. There's nothing to turn on; it's how every card works. If you only want the item on the clipboard, use the card's copy button instead.

How to click-to-paste

1. Click into the place you want to paste: a document, a chat box, a terminal, a form field.
2. Open the shelf by moving the cursor to its screen edge or pressing Alt+C.
3. Click the card you want.

The shelf closes and the item appears at your cursor. What gets pasted depends on the card:

Clicking a stack expands it rather than pasting. To paste several files from a stack, open its preview flyout, select them and choose Paste Selected, or drag the stack instead.

Copy without pasting

Each card also has a copy button. It puts the item on the clipboard and does nothing else, so you can paste it yourself with Ctrl+V, in a different app or several times.

Why the shelf doesn't steal focus

On Windows, the window you're typing in is the foreground window, and clicking another window normally moves the foreground to it. That's why many clipboard popups interrupt your work: once the popup has focus, your original app is no longer active, and the popup has to hand focus back before the paste can land. Edge Drop's shelf is built so it never becomes the foreground window:

• It's created as a non-focusable window.
• It has the Windows WS_EX_NOACTIVATE style. Microsoft's documentation says a window with this style "does not become the foreground window when the user clicks it".
• It's shown without being activated, and it has no taskbar button; it lives in the system tray.

So when you click a card, the app you were typing in is still the active window, and the Ctrl+V that Edge Drop sends lands there.

Two moments are exceptions. While you type in the shelf's Search history... box, or record a new shortcut in Settings, the shelf takes keyboard focus so your keystrokes reach it. Clicking a search result still pastes into the app you were using before.

Check it in 30 seconds

1. Open Notepad and type a few words, leaving the cursor blinking at the end.
2. Open the Edge Drop shelf without clicking anywhere else.
3. Click a text card.

The text should appear in Notepad at the cursor, and Notepad's title bar should still look active. If it does, click-to-paste is working.

When a click doesn't paste

• You see "Clipboard ready — click your app and press Ctrl+V to paste". Edge Drop couldn't confirm a window to paste into. The item is already on the clipboard; click into your app and press Ctrl+V.
• The target runs as administrator. Windows' User Interface Privilege Isolation stops an app from sending input to windows running at a higher privilege level, so Edge Drop's simulated Ctrl+V can't reach an elevated app. Use the copy button, click into the admin window and press Ctrl+V yourself. Running Edge Drop itself as administrator isn't a good fix, because it records everything you copy. Can't paste into an admin window has more.
• The field blocks pasting. Some password and verification fields reject paste by design. See why paste fails in password fields.
• You clicked twice quickly. A second paste within 0.6 seconds is ignored, so you won't get duplicates from a double-click.
• Another clipboard tool interferes. Two managers watching the clipboard can trip each other up. See two clipboard managers fighting.
• The app wants a file dropped, not pasted. Some upload areas and canvases only accept drag and drop. Drag the card out instead.

Related settings

• Move pasted items to top (Behaviour tab, on by default): moves a card to the top of the list after you paste it. Turn it off to keep your list in copy order.
• Hover Activation and Global Toggle Shortcut (Behaviour tab): control how the shelf opens. Both work the same way with click-to-paste.

There's no setting to switch click-to-paste off or to paste as plain text.

FAQ

Does Edge Drop paste formatted or plain text?

It pastes text with the formatting it was copied with, where available. Edge Drop has no plain-text option. To strip formatting, see how to paste without formatting on Windows.

Will clicking a link card open the link?

No, clicking pastes it. Link cards have a separate open-link button that opens the address in your default browser.

Does click-to-paste work in Remote Desktop?

Edge Drop sends Ctrl+V to the Remote Desktop window like any other app. The remote session then needs clipboard sharing to work for the content to arrive. See Remote Desktop copy-paste not working.
