How to Search Clipboard History in Edge Drop
To search your Edge Drop history, open the shelf, click the Search history... box and start typing. The list narrows as you type to text, links and colour codes that contain your words, plus files whose names match. Matching ignores upper and lower case. Images and screenshots are hidden while a search is active, because they have no text to match.
How to search
- Open the shelf by moving the cursor to its screen edge or pressing Alt+C.
- Click the Search history... box. On the left or right edge it's a full row above the list; on the Top Edge dock it's in the header.
- Type part of what you're looking for. Results update with each key; there's no need to press Enter.
- Click a result to paste it into the app you were using, or drag a file result out.
- Press Esc once to clear the search, and again to leave the box.
Closing the shelf also clears the search, so it opens with the full list next time.

Search looks for your text anywhere inside the item, so voice also matches invoice. Use a distinctive word, a domain name or the start of a file name for the shortest list.
Long clips are searched by their first 300 characters
Edge Drop keeps a 300-character preview of each long text in its index and stores the rest in a separate file. Search runs against that preview. If a phrase only appears deep inside a long clip, search won't find it; search for a word near the start instead, or scroll and open the clip in the preview flyout.
Search with filters and pins
Search works together with the filter tabs along the top: All, Text, Links, Images, Files, Colors. Both apply at once. Choosing Links and typing docs shows only links containing "docs"; choosing Files and typing .pdf shows only PDF files. To visit a link you've found rather than paste it, open it from its card. If a search returns nothing, check you're on All before trying another word. Using Edge Drop's filters explains what each tab includes.
Search covers both sections of the shelf, so matching items appear under PINNED and RECENT. If you keep coming back to the same item, pin it and you won't need to search at all.
To find a screenshot or other image, use the Images filter instead of search and scan the thumbnails.
How far back search goes
Search covers everything still in your history. How much that is depends on your settings on the Behaviour tab:
- History capacity keeps up to 100, 250 (the default), 500 or 1000 unpinned items. Older ones are removed as new copies arrive.
- Auto-delete timer, if set to 1h, 6h, 24h or 7d, removes unpinned items older than that.
- Clear unpinned on restart, if on, empties unpinned history each time Edge Drop starts.
Pinned items are never removed by these, so they're always searchable. Copying something that's already in history doesn't create a duplicate: the existing card moves to the top and shows "Copied N times".
Typing in the search box and focus
Normally the shelf never takes keyboard focus. While you type in the search box it does, so your keystrokes go into the box, and the global shortcut is paused. If search doesn't find something
- It's an image. Images can't be searched. Use the Images filter.
- It's a file, and you searched for the folder. Only the file name is matched, not the path.
- The words are deep in a long clip. Search a word from the first 300 characters.
- A filter is on. Switch to All.
- It's no longer in history. It may have passed your History capacity, expired under the Auto-delete timer, or been cleared. Clears and limits never touch pinned items.
- It was copied while Incognito mode was on, or from a password manager. Edge Drop doesn't record those copies, so there's nothing to find.
FAQ
Is Edge Drop search case-sensitive?
No. GitHub, github and GITHUB all return the same results.
Can I search text inside screenshots?
No. Edge Drop doesn't read text in images. To pull the text out first, see how to copy text out of an image on Windows; once copied, that text is searchable like any other clip.
Can Windows clipboard history (Win+V) find a copied file?
No. Windows clipboard history stores text, HTML and images, not files. For what its panel can and can't find, see Win+V search is not really search.
