How to Open Links From Edge-Drop in Your Browser

How to Open Links From Edge-Drop in Your Browser — Edge Drop Guide

A URL on the clipboard is usually a multi-step interaction: copy the URL, switch to the browser, focus the address bar, paste, press Enter. Five actions for one outcome. Edge-Drop shortens this by treating URLs as first-class link cards, with an offline title and favicon preview, and a single-click "open in browser" action. This guide covers how URL detection works, where the title and favicon come from, how to open a link directly, and what to do when the title is missing or wrong. For neighbouring workflows see how to use the preview flyout and what Edge-Drop does with password manager copies.

How URL detection works

When Edge-Drop captures a text item, it runs a lightweight URL detector over the content. The detector looks for strings that match common URL patterns:

  • http:// and https:// URLs
  • ftp:// URLs (less common but supported)
  • Bare domains that look like URLs (e.g., example.com/path) — this is heuristic and may produce false positives, so the detector is conservative

If the detector identifies the entire item as a URL, the item is shown as a link card. If the URL is embedded in larger text (e.g., a paragraph that contains a URL), the item is shown as a text card; only items that are entirely a URL get the link card treatment.

The detection runs locally. No network request is made to verify the URL is live or to fetch the title. This is a privacy choice: the user's clipboard content is not sent anywhere just because it looks like a URL. The trade-off is that the title and favicon may be missing on first capture; see "Where the title and favicon come from" below.

Where the title and favicon come from

The link card shows a title and a favicon when available. Both are fetched offline, from a local cache that Edge-Drop maintains.

  • Favicon — fetched from the URL's origin the first time the URL is captured, using the standard favicon lookup paths (/favicon.ico, link rel="icon" in the HTML head). The favicon is cached locally and reused for subsequent captures of URLs from the same origin.
  • Title — fetched from the URL's HTML <title> tag the first time the URL is captured. Cached locally and reused.

Both fetches happen in the background, after the URL is captured. The link card initially shows the raw URL; once the title and favicon are fetched, the card updates to show them. This may take a second or two for the first capture from a new origin.

If the URL is unreachable (offline, 404, blocked), the card falls back to showing the raw URL with a generic link icon. No retry is attempted automatically; the next time the URL is captured, the fetch is tried again.

How to open a link in your browser

From the shelf:

  1. Hover or hotkey to open the shelf.
  2. Find the link card for the URL you want.
  3. Click the "Open" button (or equivalent) on the card. Alternatively, double-click the card.
  4. The URL opens in your default browser.

The "open" action uses the Windows default browser association. Whatever browser is set as the default for https:// URLs in Windows Settings → Apps → Default apps is the one that opens. Edge-Drop does not override this; if you want a specific browser, set it as the Windows default.

From the preview flyout:

  1. Hover or click the link card to open the preview flyout.
  2. The flyout shows the full URL, title, and favicon.
  3. Click the "Open" button in the flyout.
  4. The URL opens in your default browser.

For the flyout workflow, see how to use the preview flyout.

How to copy a URL without opening it

Sometimes you want to copy a URL to share it, not to open it. From the shelf:

  1. Hover or hotkey to open the shelf.
  2. Find the link card.
  3. Click the card itself (not the "Open" button) to push the URL to the clipboard via click-to-paste. See how to click-to-paste without stealing focus.
  4. Or use the context menu (right-click) and choose "Copy URL."

For cleaning tracking parameters from a URL before sharing, see how to copy a clean link without tracking parameters.

How URL cards interact with filters

Edge-Drop's filters — All / Text / Links / Images / Files — include a Links filter that shows only link cards. This is useful when you have copied several URLs in a session and want to find one quickly:

  1. Open the shelf.
  2. Click the Links filter.
  3. The shelf shows only link cards.
  4. Find the URL you want.
  5. Click "Open" or click the card to copy.

For the filter workflow, see how to filter text links images and files.

Failure modes

  • Title is wrong or stale — the title is fetched once and cached. If the page's title changes, the cached title is stale. There is no automatic refresh. To force a re-fetch, delete the link card from the shelf and re-copy the URL.
  • Favicon is missing — some sites do not serve a favicon, or serve it from a different origin. The card shows a generic link icon. This is cosmetic; the URL still opens correctly.
  • URL is unreachable — if the site is offline, the title and favicon fetch fails. The card shows the raw URL with a generic icon. The URL still opens in the browser; the browser will show its own error page.
  • URL is internal (intranet) — Edge-Drop's fetch runs as the local user, so intranet URLs that the user can reach should fetch correctly. URLs behind a VPN should work when the VPN is up.
  • URL is a magnet link or custom scheme — mailto:, magnet:, tel:, and other custom schemes may not be detected as URLs. They are stored as text items. The user can still click them in the browser after pasting.
  • Default browser does not open — if the Windows default browser association is broken (e.g., the default browser was uninstalled), the "Open" action may fail silently. Fix the association in Windows Settings → Apps → Default apps.
  • Click-to-paste instead of open — if the user clicks the card body instead of the "Open" button, the URL is pushed to the clipboard rather than opened. This is by design — the card body is the paste target; the "Open" button is the launch target. The distinction is visible in the card's UI.

Privacy considerations

The first time a URL is captured, Edge-Drop makes a network request to the URL's origin to fetch the title and favicon. This request:

  • Comes from the user's machine, using the user's IP address.
  • May be logged by the destination server.
  • Carries a standard browser-like User-Agent string.

For most users this is fine — the same request the browser would make on visit. For users on a sensitive network (e.g., a journalist working on a story, a security researcher investigating a phishing site), the fetch may be unwanted.

To disable the title/favicon fetch entirely:

  1. Open the Behaviour tab in settings.
  2. Find the "Fetch link previews" toggle (or equivalent).
  3. Turn it off.

With the toggle off, link cards show only the raw URL with a generic icon. No network request is made on capture. The "Open" action still works; the browser makes its own request when the URL is opened.

For the broader privacy posture, see privacy settings checklist for any clipboard manager and how to audit whether a clipboard app talks to the network.

How URL cards interact with pinned items

Pinned link cards behave like other pinned items: they survive restart, they are not aged out by auto-delete timers, and they stay at the top of the shelf. A pinned link card is effectively a bookmark — a quick way to keep a frequently-visited URL one click away.

For the pin workflow, see how to pin and unpin items in Edge-Drop.

Common pinned-link patterns:

  • The on-call dashboard URL.
  • The team's wiki home page.
  • The current sprint board.
  • A documentation URL you reference repeatedly.

What Edge-Drop does not claim

  • Edge-Drop does not synchronise link cards across machines. There is no cloud sync. See why some clipboard apps will never sync.
  • Edge-Drop does not preview the page content. The card shows the title and favicon only; there is no rendered preview of the page.
  • Edge-Drop does not validate URLs. A malformed URL that the browser will reject is still shown as a link card; the browser will show its own error.
  • Edge-Drop does not open URLs in a specific browser profile. The Windows default browser and its default profile are used.
  • Edge-Drop does not deduplicate URLs. If the same URL is copied three times, three link cards appear. Use the search box to find the most recent.

Summary

URLs on the clipboard are first-class link cards in Edge-Drop, with an offline title and favicon fetched from the URL's origin on first capture. Click "Open" to launch in the default browser, or click the card body to push the URL to the clipboard for pasting. The Links filter shows only link cards. For privacy-sensitive workflows, the title/favicon fetch can be disabled in the Behaviour tab; the "Open" action still works. Pinned link cards function as quick-access bookmarks that survive restart.
