1Clipboard Alternatives: What to Use Now

1Clipboard Alternatives: What to Use Now — Edge Drop Guide

1Clipboard still appears in "best clipboard manager" roundups, which is strange for an app that has not had a meaningful update in years. If you found this page because a roundup sent you to 1Clipboard, here is the situation and what to install instead.

What 1Clipboard was

The pitch was "Copy here. Paste there": a universal clipboard with history across devices, starred favorites, and search, synced through Google Drive with a Google account. The desktop clients were Electron apps (Angular + PouchDB), with an offline mode for single-computer use. The official site still describes the product as beta and warns that unknown issues should be expected.

The project's GitHub mirror describes it as a work in progress not yet ready for production, with the maintainer noting a from-scratch rewrite. TechSpot still hosts version 0.1.8 for download. AlternativeTo marks the app Discontinued. Whatever the precise label, the practical facts are: no recent release, a stale beta banner, and an Electron stack with clipboard rights that nobody is patching.

None of this erases why people liked it. Cross-device clipboard through a Google account you already had, on Windows and macOS, for free. That combination is still rare. The alternatives below cover the same jobs with maintained software.

The decision first: do you actually need cross-device?

Most 1Clipboard users wanted one of two things: clipboard history on one PC, or clipboard sync across devices. Those are different products. Pick your column before picking an app.

If the job is history on one PC, you do not need sync at all, and sync is pure risk. A local manager is faster, private, and simpler.

If the job is genuinely cross-device, accept the tradeoff honestly: your copies travel through someone's infrastructure. Then pick the infrastructure you trust.

For local history: Ditto and Edge-Drop

Ditto is the closest in spirit to a maintained 1Clipboard-without-sync: free, open source (GPL-3.0), local database, keyboard-first history with search, groups, and plain-text paste. Version 3.25.113.0 shipped in September 2025, and it offers installer, portable zip, Chocolatey, winget, and Store builds. If you liked 1Clipboard's history and search but never used the Drive sync, Ditto is the direct replacement.

Edge-Drop is the visual alternative: a hover-activated shelf on the screen edge holding text, links, images, and file stacks, with native drag-out into any app. Local-first, Apache-2.0, no account, no cloud. It is not a sync tool and does not try to be. The head-to-head is Edge-Drop vs Ditto: Hover Shelf or Tray History?: Hover Shelf or Tray History.

For cross-device sync: the maintained options

  • Windows' own clipboard sync (Settings > System > Clipboard > Clipboard history across your devices) syncs text between PCs on the same Microsoft or work account. No extra app, documented by Microsoft, text-oriented. Its exact behavior and limits are in Clipboard History Across Devices: What Microsoft Syncs and Does Windows Clipboard Sync Upload What You Copy.
  • ClipboardFusion's Pro sync encrypts with 256-bit encryption across Windows, Android, and iOS. Sync is a paid Pro feature; the free tier is local history plus macros. The comparison is Edge-Drop vs ClipboardFusion: Local Shelf vs Cloud Macros.
  • UniClipboard is a newer open-source sync-first manager (version 0.3.0) with per-device sync controls and content-type toggles, plus a portable Windows build. Worth watching if you want sync without a Google account in the loop.

The category decision, sync vs local, is the whole subject of 1Clipboard and Cloud Clip Apps vs Local Managers. That post was written when 1Clipboard was the example; the framework still holds with 1Clipboard as the cautionary tale.

Questions people ask

Is 1Clipboard safe to keep using? It still launches, but "still launches" is not a safety standard for an app with full clipboard access. No recent release means no security patches. Migrate.

Does 1Clipboard sync still work? Sync ran through Google Drive with a Google account. There is no announcement of a shutdown, but with no maintainer, any breakage from a Google API change or an Electron incompatibility stays broken. Do not build a workflow on it.

I only used offline mode. Do I still need to switch? Offline mode removes the sync risk, but not the unmaintained risk. Ditto gives you the same local history, maintained, with a portable build.

Migration checklist

If you are still running 1Clipboard, do this in order:

  1. Export anything worth keeping: starred favorites and history you actually reference. Once the app is gone, its local database may be hard to read.
  2. Turn off its Google Drive sync first, so a half-migrated state does not keep uploading copies.
  3. Install the replacement (Ditto for local history, or set up Windows sync for cross-device).
  4. Run both for a week. Old muscle memory dies slowly.
  5. Uninstall 1Clipboard. An unmaintained Electron app with clipboard access should not sit in your tray out of nostalgia.

What not to do

Do not keep running an unmaintained Electron app with full clipboard access because it still launches. Clipboard managers see everything you copy: passwords, tokens, private messages. An unpatched app in that position is the wrong place to save money. If you are still on 1Clipboard, export anything worth keeping and uninstall.
