How to Disable Windows Clipboard Cloud Sync
Disabling cloud clipboard sync is a Settings change, not a registry adventure. Microsoft documents the switch on System > Clipboard. History can stay on. Sync can stay off. Those are independent.
This guide is the consumer path, the confirmation test, and the work-PC case where the switch is already grayed out.
What is being turned off
On Windows 11 the label is Clipboard history across your devices. Under it sit Automatically sync text that I copy and Manually sync text that I copy.
Microsoft Support: sync is tied to the same Microsoft or work account on each device. Automatic mode uploads text as it is copied. Manual mode uploads only when the sync control on a Win+V item is used.
Turning this off does not:
- Disable copy and paste.
- Disable local Clipboard history (unless that toggle is also turned off).
- Uninstall Phone Link or keyboard cloud clipboards.
- Disable Windows Recall on a Copilot+ PC.
Those are separate surfaces. See Does Windows Clipboard Sync Upload What You Copy?.
Windows 11 steps
- Select Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Find Clipboard history across your devices.
- Set that toggle to Off.
- If the page still shows a choice between automatic and manual text sync, leave automatic unselected. With the master switch off, new copies should not upload.
- Optional: keep Clipboard history On if Win+V is still wanted locally.
- Optional: select Clear under Clear clipboard data to wipe unpinned items on the device and, per Microsoft, the cloud copy of those items. Pinned items remain. Unpin secrets first.
If the goal is no history at all
Set Clipboard history to Off as well. That is a larger change: Win+V stops recording, and some capture flows that expect history may behave differently. How to Turn Clipboard History Off Completely.
Confirm nothing is still syncing
Use two PCs that previously shared the account, or one PC and the Microsoft account’s other signed-in device.
- On PC A, copy a unique string that has never been copied before, for example
nosync-110-probe. - On PC B, press Windows logo key + V.
- The probe must not appear.
- Wait a minute and refresh the panel. Still absent.
- Copy a second probe after a reboot of PC A. Still absent on PC B.
If a pre-existing item still shows on PC B, it may have been uploaded earlier. Delete it on each device: Win+V > … > Delete, or Clear clipboard data (unpinned only).
Pins are local until deleted. They are not a reason to leave sync on.
Windows 10 leftover PCs
On Windows 10 the label was Sync across devices. Path: Settings > System > Clipboard. Turn it Off.
Mainstream support ended October 14, 2025. Disabling sync on an unsupported PC is still worth doing. It is not a substitute for moving to Windows 11.
When the toggle is missing or grayed out
Work or school account
IT can set Allow Clipboard synchronization across devices (AllowCrossDeviceClipboard) to not allowed. Microsoft Learn: if the policy is disabled, clipboard contents cannot be shared to other devices. The Settings row grays out.
There is no supported consumer bypass. Ask IT, or use a personal PC for personal accounts. Enterprise Controls for Windows Clipboard History.
Not signed in
Sync requires the account Microsoft documents. A local-only Windows account will not roam clipboard text. That is already the desired privacy state.
History is off
Sync is not useful without history to show the received item. If history is off, turn sync off anyway so a later “turn history on” does not inherit an old automatic-sync choice.
Other channels people forget
After the Windows toggle is off, check:
| Channel | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Phone Link clipboard | Phone Link app permissions; privacy checklist |
| SwiftKey / Gboard cloud clipboard | Keyboard app settings |
| ClipboardFusion Pro sync | ClipboardFusion settings; pause or sign out |
| Other clip apps | Each app’s account / sync page |
Windows Off + a third-party sync On is not “disabled.” Cloud Clipboard Apps Worth Using in 2026.
Shared family PCs
If several people used one Microsoft account, turn sync off, clear unpinned history, and create separate accounts. Clipboard History on a Shared Family PC.
Do not pin household passwords in Win+V. Pins survive restart and survive a casual Clear.
Optional local tools after sync is off
Local history (Win+V, Ditto, CopyQ, or a shelf such as Edge-Drop) can stay useful. Prefer tools that do not open a network socket for the clipboard. CopyQ’s security page states it does not send data over the network. Verify any extra app with How to Audit Whether a Clipboard App Talks to the Network.
After a sync-on period: cleanup order
If automatic text sync was on for weeks:
- Turn the devices toggle Off on every PC signed into the account, not only the current one.
- On each PC, press Win+V and delete leftover items that should not roam (or Clear all, after unpinning secrets).
- Use Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear clipboard data. Microsoft documents this as clearing unpinned items on the device and the cloud.
- Sign out of unused devices at account.microsoft.com device lists if old laptops still have the account.
- Change any password that was copied while auto-sync was on, from a password manager with autofill, not from a clipboard.
Pinned items are not cleared by Clear. Walk the pin list on each device.
Suggested actions and other readers
Disabling sync does not disable Suggested actions, Phone Link, or a third-party manager. If the goal is “nothing leaves this chair,” continue through those surfaces. Turning Off Suggested Actions for Privacy.
A one-page household instruction
- Each person gets their own Microsoft account.
- Clipboard history may stay on.
- Clipboard history across your devices stays Off unless someone has two personal PCs and never copies passwords.
- Shared family PCs use local accounts or separate Windows profiles.
That instruction prevents more leaks than any registry article.
Settings labels that are easy to miss
Windows 11: Clipboard history across your devices, then Automatically sync text that I copy / Manually sync text that I copy.
Windows 10: Sync across devices. Same idea, older words. Still check leftover PCs.
Some Insider or OEM builds have moved privacy links. If search in Settings for clipboard does not show the page, the PC may be policy-controlled or on an unusual SKU. ms-settings:clipboard in the Run dialog opens the page when it exists.
Suggested actions, Phone Link, and SwiftKey will not appear on that page. They need their own Off switches.
Verify on a single PC (no second device)
Even without PC B:
- Set devices toggle Off.
- Copy
local-only-probe. - Open Win+V and confirm there is no cloud/sync glyph being applied to new items (manual sync control should not be in play).
- In an InPrivate window on another browser profile that is *not* signed into the Microsoft account, the string must not appear — it never would via this feature without the account.
The reliable test remains a second signed-in PC. The single-PC steps only catch an obviously still-enabled automatic option.
If the household has an Xbox or extra laptop signed into the same account, treat that as PC B.
After Off, leave it Off through the next Windows feature update. Updates have been known to resurface Settings pages; re-check the toggle once.
If the toggle will not stay Off, the PC is managed. Stop. Ask IT.
Keep local history if Win+V is useful. Sync Off does not require history Off. They are independent toggles.
