How to View What's on Your Clipboard in Windows 11

To see what's on your clipboard in Windows 11, press Windows logo key + V. If clipboard history is on, the panel shows your recent copies with the newest at the top. Windows has no separate clipboard viewer, so to check exactly what Ctrl+V will paste right now, paste into Notepad (for text), Paint (for an image) or a File Explorer folder (for files), or run Get-Clipboard in PowerShell.

Open clipboard history with Win+V

1. Press Windows logo key + V.
2. If you see Turn on, history is off; select it to start recording. Anything copied before that can't be shown.
3. Your copies are listed newest first. The top one is usually what Ctrl+V will paste.

Win+V only lists text, HTML and images up to 4 MB, and never shows files copied in File Explorer. So an empty or out-of-date list doesn't mean the clipboard is empty. What Win+V opens explains everything in that panel.

Check the current item by pasting

The quickest test is to paste somewhere harmless:

Use an empty test folder for files. If the files were cut rather than copied, pasting moves them.

If the last thing you copied might be a password, paste it where no one else can see the screen, then copy something harmless to replace it.

View the clipboard with PowerShell

PowerShell can print the current clipboard without pasting it anywhere. Open Windows PowerShell from the Start menu and run:

Get-Clipboard

That shows any text on the clipboard. Windows PowerShell 5.1, the version built into Windows, can also read other formats:

Get-Clipboard -Format FileDropList
Get-Clipboard -Format Image
Get-Clipboard -TextFormatType Html

The first lists copied files with their folder, size and date. The second returns an image object, and shows its details such as width and height if an image is on the clipboard. The third shows the HTML version of formatted text, when there is one. PowerShell 7 reads text only.

To list every format the current copy offers, run these two lines in Windows PowerShell:

Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Windows.Forms
[System.Windows.Forms.Clipboard]::GetDataObject().GetFormats()

A plain text copy from Notepad lists entries such as UnicodeText and Text. A copy from a web page usually adds HTML Format. Copied files show FileDrop. The PowerShell clipboard cheat sheet has more commands.

Use a free clipboard viewer

InsideClipboard from NirSoft is a free, portable tool that shows every format currently stored on the clipboard, including the raw contents of each, and can save any one of them to a file. It runs without installation on Windows XP through Windows 11. It's useful when you need to see exactly what an app placed on the clipboard, such as why a paste behaves differently in two programs.

Why the clipboard can look empty

• History is off, or the PC restarted. Win+V shows only copies made since history was turned on, and only pinned items survive a restart.
• The copy was files. Files paste in File Explorer but never appear in Win+V or Notepad.
• The copy was too large for history. It can still paste with Ctrl+V.
• The app excluded it. Password managers often mark copies so Win+V doesn't keep them.
• You're in a different session. Copies in a Remote Desktop session or virtual machine don't always reach your own PC's clipboard.

Seeing more than the last item

FAQ

Is there a clipboard viewer built into Windows 11?

Not as a separate app. Win+V shows clipboard history, and PowerShell's Get-Clipboard shows the current item. Older Windows versions had a Clipboard Viewer program, but it isn't included now.

Can I see what I copied yesterday?

Only if you pinned it, or if you use a clipboard manager that keeps history across restarts. Win+V clears unpinned items when the PC restarts.

Does Get-Clipboard change the clipboard?

No. It only reads the current contents.
