Pinned Clipboard Items Gone in Windows 11? Causes and Fixes

Pinned items in Windows clipboard history are designed to survive restarts, Clear all and Clear clipboard data, so if they're gone, something else removed them or history isn't loading. The usual causes are clipboard history being turned off or broken, the history cache being deleted as a fix for an empty Win+V, or a new user profile or PC. Windows has no Recycle Bin or export for pins, so once they're truly deleted, you'll need to re-pin them from their source.

What should never remove a pin

Pinned items stay through all of these (Microsoft documents every one except Clear all, which leaves pins in place too):

• restarting the PC,
• the 25-item limit (older unpinned items drop off instead),
• Clear all at the top of the Win+V panel,
• Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear clipboard data > Clear.

A pin only goes away when you unpin it (it then clears at the next restart) or delete it with See more (...) > Delete. If you're sure you did neither, check the causes below.

Check these first

1. Is history on? Press Win+V. If you see a Turn on button, select it and check whether the pins come back.
2. Are you on the clipboard tab? The Win+V panel in Windows 11 also has emoji, GIF, kaomoji and symbol tabs. Select the clipboard icon.
3. Do new copies appear? Copy a word in Notepad and press Win+V. If it says "Nothing here", the problem is clipboard history as a whole, not your pins. Work through Win+V says "Nothing here" first. If your pins are still stored, they may reappear once history works.
4. Is the switch grayed out? On a work or school PC, an organization can turn clipboard history off with the Allow Clipboard History policy, and nothing in Win+V is available while it's off. See clipboard history grayed out by organization.

Why pins really disappear

The Clipboard cache folder was deleted

Windows keeps clipboard history on disk under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Clipboard. A widely shared fix for an empty Win+V panel is to delete the folders inside it. That resets history completely, pins included. If you or a cleanup tool cleared that folder, the pins went with it.

A new account or a new PC

Clipboard history belongs to one user account on one PC. Signing in to a new profile, a new computer or a rebuilt machine gives you an empty list. Clipboard history across your devices doesn't carry pins over: Microsoft documents it as syncing copied text, and doesn't describe pins syncing.

A reset, reinstall or major Windows upgrade

Microsoft doesn't document whether pins survive Reset this PC, a repair reinstall or a feature upgrade. If pins vanished straight after one of these and the checks above didn't bring them back, there's no supported way to restore them.

Can you recover deleted pins?

Not through Windows. There's no undo, no Recycle Bin for clipboard history, and no export or import. It works the other way round, too: clipboard history isn't an undo for deleted text either.

The only possibility is a full backup of your user folder that included the hidden AppData folder from before the loss. Restoring the Clipboard folder from it is unsupported and may not work. In most cases the quickest route is to recopy each item from the email, document or website it came from.

How to stop losing pins

• Keep a master copy. Paste each pin into a text file in Documents or OneDrive, with a short label. How to pin items in Windows clipboard history has the steps.
• Pin less. Pins work best for a handful of short, non-secret items. A weekly pin review keeps the list small enough to rebuild quickly.
• Move longer text elsewhere. Standard replies belong in a text expander, Word's Quick Parts or a notes app, which have real storage and backup.
• Never pin secrets. Passwords and recovery codes belong in a password manager.

If you want pins in a tool with its own storage, a clipboard manager is the other route. Does Clear all delete pinned items?

No. Clear all in the Win+V panel and Clear clipboard data in Settings both keep pinned items. To remove a pin, delete or unpin it individually.

Do pins disappear after a restart?

No. A restart clears unpinned items only. If everything, pins included, is gone after a restart, history probably isn't loading; see the checks above.

Do pinned items sync to other PCs?

Microsoft documents syncing copied text when Clipboard history across your devices is on, not pins. Expect each PC to have its own pins.
