Use Edge Drop With PowerToys Advanced Paste (Don't Pick Only One)

PowerToys Advanced Paste clipboard shelf pairing works because the tools do different jobs. Advanced Paste is a transform of the *current* clipboard. Default open: Win+Shift+V. Paste as Markdown or JSON (local, no AI). Optional local Phi Silica on supported Copilot+ PCs, or other model providers you add. It is not a history rival.

A clipboard shelf (edgedrop.app) keeps older text, links, images, and files so you can hover and drag them out. Hover or Alt+C. OLE drag-out. Apache-2.0 by Deepender Yadav. No account, no cloud clipboard, no telemetry of copies. Store 9P3JMHN9M4NR. It does not rewrite HTML as Markdown.

Microsoft’s Edge Drop pane in the browser is a third name, retired in Edge 152 (Stable 152.0.4191.53, 27 August 2026). Irrelevant here.

Don’t run two history managers. Win+V, Ditto, CopyQ, a hub clipboard tab, and the shelf all *log*. Advanced Paste’s optional in-window history is easy to treat as a fourth logger — leave it off if the shelf or Win+V already owns history. Win+V itself is 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart.

PowerToys Advanced Paste clipboard shelf: roles split

Microsoft Learn: enable Advanced Paste in PowerToys Settings. Do not bind it to Ctrl+V. Paste as Markdown and Paste as JSON are local. Image-to-text uses local OCR. Transcode to mp3/mp4 is local. Paste with AI is a separate switch: OpenAI, Azure, Ollama, Foundry Local, Phi Silica on Copilot+ with an NPU, and others as documented. Cloud providers send clipboard content to that API. If that is unacceptable, don’t add them. Phi Silica stays on device when the model is actually present — Learn tells you to download it via Windows Update if it isn’t ready.

Edge Drop: no OCR, no JSON pretty-print, no model. OLE drag-out, stacks, filters. Local, no account. Electron RAM ~130–160 MB in project notes.

Workflow 1 — Docs site into Obsidian

1. Copy a formatted paragraph in the browser. The shelf stores a card; the live clipboard holds the rich text.
2. Click the Obsidian note.
3. Win+Shift+V → Paste as Markdown (or your direct Markdown shortcut if you set one).
4. If you needed the *previous* quote, hover the shelf, click or paste that card, then transform *that* live clipboard with Advanced Paste.

The shelf is the index. Advanced Paste is the mill. Win+V can stand in for the index if 25 texts are enough.

Workflow 2 — Screenshot to ticket, plus OCR when you need text

1. Win+Shift+S (or ShareX) captures a region. Bitmap hits the clipboard; the shelf shows an image card.
2. Drag the card into the bug tracker if the tracker wants a file/drop.
3. If you needed the error string inside the PNG, focus the ticket field and Win+Shift+V → image to text (local OCR).
4. Do not expect the shelf to OCR. Do not expect Advanced Paste to keep the PNG after twenty more copies — the shelf does that.

Pairing with ShareX is after capture → shelf → drag.

Workflow 3 — JSON from a messy dump (optional Phi Silica)

1. Copy XML, logs, or a half-structured blob.
2. If the shape is regular, Paste as JSON (local, no AI) is enough.
3. If you need a rewrite (“make this a table of keys”), that is Paste with AI. Prefer Phi Silica or Ollama if the content cannot leave the PC. Read the linked AI article before you paste customer data into a cloud key.
4. Keep the original blob on the shelf so a bad transform isn’t the only copy.

Advanced Paste still only sees the live item. Pin or leave the original on the shelf first.

Settings that keep them from fighting

• PowerToys: Advanced Paste on. Optional clipboard history off if Edge Drop or Win+V is the logger.
• Edge Drop: hover + Alt+C. Don’t steal Win+Shift+V.
• Windows: Win+V on or off — one history owner besides the shelf, maximum.
• AI: off until you need it. Phi Silica only on machines that actually have the model.

Electron shelf RAM plus PowerToys is still cheaper than a second full manager plus a hub clipboard.

Shortcut collisions and what to turn off

Windows already uses Win+V. Advanced Paste uses Win+Shift+V. The shelf uses hover and Alt+C by default (configurable). Those three can coexist.

What collides:

• Binding Advanced Paste to Ctrl+V (Microsoft tells you not to).
• A hub island that also maps a global clipboard chord.
• Ditto’s Ctrl+` plus a shelf plus Win+V plus Advanced Paste history — four lists.

PowerToys is a bundle. Installing it for FancyZones also drops Advanced Paste. Disable the utility if you only wanted zones. Disable Paste with AI if you only wanted Markdown. Disable the in-window clipboard history if Edge Drop is the logger.

Transforms work on whatever is live. If you click a shelf card, that click-to-paste puts the item on the clipboard (and into the focused app). Then Win+Shift+V can mill it. Order: pick from shelf, then transform. Reverse order mills the wrong item.

Customer data, credentials, and medical screenshots: keep AI providers off. Local Markdown/JSON/OCR are the boring, correct tools. Phi Silica is still a model running on the PC — not a reason to paste a vault.

CopyQ can do both history and transforms if you want one binary and will write scripts. That is a different personality than “PowerToys + shelf.” Most people should not install CopyQ *and* Edge Drop *and* Advanced Paste history. PowerToys is already on many Windows machines; adding a shelf is one extra process, not a new vendor stack. Keep Win+V if you still want a 25-item OS list; just don’t treat Advanced Paste as a third history.

Shelf for staging: https://www.edgedrop.app. Transforms: PowerToys. Enable Win+V if you don’t have a shelf yet and only overwrite text.

Order of operations, written once: capture (Snipping Tool / ShareX) → shelf card if you need it later → click the card to make it live if it is not already → Win+Shift+V mill → paste. Skipping the shelf step is fine when the live clipboard is enough. Skipping the mill is fine when the destination wants a file drop, not Markdown.

When Edge Drop fits / does not

The shelf fits this pairing when you need older cards and file drag-out *and* you already use Advanced Paste (or will) for Markdown/JSON/OCR.

Do not use Edge Drop if:

• You only needed Win+Shift+V transforms of the live item. Stay on PowerToys + Win+V.
• You needed one scriptable binary (CopyQ) instead of two processes.
• You needed Microsoft’s retired OneDrive Drop.
• You will enable Advanced Paste history *and* the shelf *and* Ditto.
• You will bind Advanced Paste to Ctrl+V.
• You will paste secrets into cloud AI providers and expected the shelf to prevent that. It will not.

FAQ

Is Advanced Paste a clipboard manager? No. It transforms what is on the clipboard now. Optional mini-history is not Ditto and should stay off if a shelf already logs.

Does Edge Drop paste as Markdown? No. Use Advanced Paste (or CopyQ scripts).

Does Phi Silica require Copilot+ hardware? Learn documents Phi Silica on supported Copilot+ PCs with an NPU. Other local options (Ollama, Foundry Local) are separate providers.

Can I run Advanced Paste and Edge Drop together? Yes, if Advanced Paste is the mill and the shelf is the index. Do not treat Advanced Paste’s optional history as a second logger.
