Edge-Drop vs PowerToys Advanced Paste
PowerToys Advanced Paste is the Microsoft-shaped clipboard query of 2025–2026. It is not a history shelf. Microsoft Learn describes it as a tool that transforms clipboard content: paste as plain text, Markdown, JSON, or files; extract text from images with local OCR; transcode media to MP3/MP4; optionally paste with AI if a model provider is configured.
Edge-Drop keeps what was copied and makes older items visible and draggable. It does not rewrite HTML as Markdown on the way out.
The default shortcut collision is easy to miss. Advanced Paste opens with Win+Shift+V by default. Windows history remains Win+V. A shelf uses hover. Three different doors.
What Advanced Paste documents
From Microsoft Learn: Advanced Paste (updated through 2025–2026):
- Enable the utility in PowerToys Settings.
- Activation shortcut default: Win+Shift+V.
- Paste as plain text, Markdown, JSON — local, no AI.
- Paste as .txt / .html / .png file into targets that accept files (for example Explorer).
- Image to text via local OCR.
- Transcode audio/video on the clipboard to
.mp3or.mp4(H.264/AAC) using Windows media APIs. Local, cancelable, progress UI. - Optional clipboard history *inside* Advanced Paste (a setting — not a replacement for the full Ditto-style database).
- Optional Paste with AI after adding a provider: OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Mistral, Google, Azure AI Inference, or local Foundry Local / Ollama. Online providers need API keys and may bill. Semantic Kernel chaining is documented for OpenAI.
- Microsoft does not recommend binding Ctrl+V as the activation shortcut.
All of the non-AI transforms are local. That is the important privacy line. AI paste is a second product hiding in the same window.
PowerToys is a bundle. Installing it for FancyZones also drops Advanced Paste on the machine. Turn off what is unused.
What Edge-Drop documents
- Persistent visual history (user-capped).
- Files and images as drag sources.
- No format conversion language.
- No OCR, no transcode, no AI.
If the user needs "this webpage as Markdown in Obsidian," Advanced Paste (or CopyQ) is the tool. If they need "those three PNGs into the deck," the shelf is the tool.
Win+V is still the small history
25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, restart wipe, optional Microsoft text sync. Advanced Paste can sit on top of the *current* clipboard and reshape it. It does not raise Microsoft's 25-item cap. Edge-Drop does not reshape.
A common stack:
- Copy in the browser.
- Win+V if the copy was two items ago.
- Win+Shift+V to paste as Markdown.
- Shelf only if the item must remain visible as an asset.
Side-by-side
| Job | Advanced Paste | Edge-Drop | Win+V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paste as plain / MD / JSON | Yes | No | No |
| OCR image → text | Yes (local) | No | No |
| Transcode media | Yes (local) | No | No |
| Optional AI rewrite | Yes (keyed) | No | No |
| Long visual history | Weak / optional | Yes | 25 |
| Drag file stacks | Paste-as-file is current item | History of stacks | No |
| Default open | Win+Shift+V | Hover | Win+V |
Transforms versus keeping a visual history
Advanced Paste wins when the live clipboard is *wrong-shaped*: rich text in a plain field, XML that should be JSON, a screenshot that should be a string, a video that should be an audio file.
Edge-Drop wins when the live clipboard is *the wrong item*: the file from three copies ago, the other screenshot, the bundle.
ClipboardFusion overlaps Advanced Paste on scrubbing and goes further with C# triggers. PowerToys is the "already in the Microsoft orbit, no extra vendor" version of transforms.
CopyQ overlaps both: scripts can transform, tabs can keep history. Heavier learning curve than either of these.
AI is optional and easy to over-enable
Paste with AI sends clipboard contents to whatever provider was configured, unless the model is local (Ollama / Foundry Local). Do not enable it on a machine that copies customer data, then paste a dump "to summarize." The Learn doc's Twain example is cute and is still an upload of the clipboard.
Local OCR and local JSON paste do not need that toggle. Leave AI off until there is a written, non-sensitive use.
Pairing without shortcut chaos
- Keep Win+V for OS history.
- Keep Win+Shift+V for Advanced Paste, or remap Advanced Paste if the chord fights IME or existing tools.
- Do not remap Advanced Paste to Win+V.
- Do not run Advanced Paste history, Win+V, Ditto, *and* a shelf all as long-term stores. Pick one historian plus one transformer.
Edge-Drop plus Advanced Paste is a coherent pair: shelf remembers, PowerToys reshapes the item that is about to be pasted. Copy from the shelf back to the live clipboard, then Win+Shift+V.
Decision
| Sentence | Tool |
|---|---|
| I need this paste to be plain text / MD / JSON | Advanced Paste |
| I need text out of this screenshot once | Advanced Paste or Snipping Tool |
| I need last hour's files visible | Edge-Drop |
| I need last month's string | Ditto / CopyQ |
| I need a 25-item session list | Win+V |
Install PowerToys if the machine does not have it and transforms are weekly. Install a shelf only if history-plus-drag is weekly. Many developers already have PowerToys and never need the shelf. That is a correct outcome.
Shortcut map that avoids collisions
| Chord | Tool | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V | Windows | Live copy / paste |
| Win+V | OS history | Last 25 text/HTML/bitmaps |
| Win+Shift+V | Advanced Paste (default) | Transform current item |
| Win+Shift+S | Snipping Tool | New bitmap on the clipboard |
| Hover edge | Edge-Drop | Older visual items, files |
Do not bind Advanced Paste to Ctrl+V. Microsoft's Learn page warns against it. Do not bind it to Win+V either; that hides the official 25-item list.
If an IME already owns Win+Shift+V, remap Advanced Paste in PowerToys Settings rather than fighting the IME. See also Win+V on Multiple Languages and IME Keyboards for the history chord.
A practical loop for a docs writer: copy HTML from a browser, Win+Shift+V, paste as Markdown into the editor. If the wrong page was copied, retrieve the right one from Win+V or the shelf, then transform again. Advanced Paste does not walk history for the user unless its own optional history setting is on — and that setting should not become a fourth historian.
