Can PowerToys Replace a Clipboard Manager?
Partly. PowerToys has no dedicated clipboard manager, but it gets closer than it used to: Command Palette can browse and paste your recent clipboard entries, and Advanced Paste can show earlier copies and paste them as plain text, Markdown, JSON or a file. What it doesn't offer is a documented long-term history with retention settings, pinned items or copied files. If you only need recent copies and cleaner pastes, PowerToys plus Win+V covers it; if you need to find something from last week, you still want a clipboard manager.
What PowerToys does for the clipboard
PowerToys is Microsoft's free, open-source set of utilities for Windows 10 and 11. You turn on each utility separately in PowerToys Settings. These are the ones that touch the clipboard:

Advanced Paste: change what you paste
Advanced Paste works on what's on the clipboard now. Press Win+Shift+V to open its window, or Win+Ctrl+Alt+V to paste plain text straight away. Microsoft lists these actions:
- Paste as plain text, Markdown or JSON, all running locally without AI,
- Paste as .txt, .html or .png file, where the app accepts pasted files (File Explorer, for example),
- Image to text, using local OCR,
- Transcode to .mp3 or .mp4 for copied audio or video files,
- Paste with AI, which is off by default.
Its settings include Access Clipboard History, which shows previously copied items in the Advanced Paste window so you can pick one to transform. That's handy for something you copied a moment ago, but it's a picker, not an archive.
When you turn on Paste with AI, Advanced Paste sends your clipboard text and prompt to the provider you choose. Online providers such as OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Mistral and Google need an API key and may charge for use; local options include Foundry Local, Ollama and Phi Silica on supported Copilot+ PCs. Command Palette: recent clipboard history
Command Palette is PowerToys' keyboard launcher. Press Win+Alt+Space and start typing to launch apps, run commands and search files. Microsoft lists Access clipboard history among its features: you can browse and paste from your recent clipboard entries without opening Win+V.
Microsoft describes it as access to recent entries. It doesn't document a retention period, a separate store or a way to keep copied files, so treat it as a faster way into recent copies rather than a replacement for a full manager.
Text Extractor and Color Picker
Text Extractor (Win+Shift+T) lets you drag across any part of the screen, then copies the recognised text to the clipboard. It only recognises languages whose Windows OCR language pack is installed, and Microsoft recommends proofreading the result. Color Picker (Win+Shift+C) copies the colour under the cursor to the clipboard, as HEX unless you choose another format, and keeps a history of up to 20 picked colours in its editor.

None of these utilities is documented as a long-term clipboard archive with retention settings, pinned items or saved files. If that's the gap you feel, add a clipboard manager. Two setups that work
PowerToys plus Win+V. Turn on clipboard history, then enable Advanced Paste and Command Palette. You get 25 recent items, pins, and paste-as-plain-text everywhere. This suits people who mostly reuse text from the last hour.
PowerToys plus a clipboard manager. Keep Advanced Paste for reshaping pastes and let the manager hold history. The default shortcuts don't collide: Win+V, Win+Shift+V, Win+Ctrl+Alt+V and a manager's own shortcut can all coexist. Microsoft notes you *can* set Ctrl+V as Advanced Paste's shortcut but doesn't recommend it, because overriding it might have unintended consequences.
How to install PowerToys
Microsoft recommends installing from the PowerToys GitHub releases page or the Microsoft Store; it's also available through WinGet:
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source wingetIt needs Windows 11, or Windows 10 version 2004 or newer, on an x64 or ARM64 PC. After installing, open PowerToys Settings and turn on the utilities you want.

Does PowerToys have a clipboard history?
Yes, in two places: Command Palette can browse and paste recent clipboard entries, and Advanced Paste has an Access Clipboard History setting. Neither is documented as long-term storage.
Does PowerToys replace Win+V?
Not entirely. Win+V gives you pinning and optional sync between PCs. PowerToys adds format conversion, OCR and a launcher on top, so most people use them together.
Is PowerToys Advanced Paste private?
