Leave Clipboard history across your devices off. A Microsoft account shared among staff is how a quiz answer key shows up on someone else’s desktop.

Numbered workflow: LMS folder → stage → teach → wipe

1. Before class, put today’s PDF/slides in a folder you are allowed to use (district drive, the class LMS). If you need snippets — a URL, a starter sentence, a rubric line — copy them as text you would write on the board. No student names.
2. Stage files (worksheet PDF, PNG of a diagram) on a local shelf if the district allows a watcher. Edge Drop is Apache-2.0, Windows 10/11, hover or Alt+C, local, no Microsoft account. If IT forbids third-party clipboard software, use Explorer + Win+V only. Do not install a shelf to bypass a GPO.
3. During class: drag the PDF into the projector machine’s reader or into the LMS upload once. Paste the URL from a card. Do not copy from an email that also shows parent phone numbers.
4. If you only paste a URL twice, Win+V is enough — then clear it. You need a shelf when you are dragging a PDF and a diagram file into a page the LMS file picker cannot see from Downloads chaos. Files are not Win+V cards. History is 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart.
5. End-of-class wipe (do this even if you are “just stepping out”): clear unpinned shelf items; delete pins that contain anything about a student; Win+V → Clear all, or Settings → System → Clipboard → Clear clipboard data; delete individual pins; copy a harmless word (done) so the live clipboard is not the last grade screenshot; sign out of the SIS/LMS. A wiped clipboard does not help if Gradebook is still open.
6. If the shelf has “clear unpinned on restart,” leave it on for shared machines. Do not assume imaging wiped Win+V pins. Run the wipe. If a student used the same Windows profile, assume their copies are in history too. Shared profiles are the wrong model; separate logins are the real fix. The wipe is damage control.
7. Subs and carts: a substitute on your login inherits your pins. Put the lesson in the LMS module the sub can open with their account. Do not leave “period 3 IEP notes” pinned as a reminder.

When Edge Drop fits / does not

Fits. The district allows a local watcher on your laptop. You want today’s worksheet PDF and a board-safe URL on the edge of the screen. Sync is off. You will not pin a roster. On a cart PC, you will run the wipe before the next adult sits down.

Does not. IT disabled clipboard history and forbids third-party watchers. You needed a student-records system — the SIS is the record. You needed a FERPA certification from a clipboard app. This page does not claim one. You needed the shelf on a mirrored projector (it will be on the wall). You needed to email a student list to personal Gmail “so the shelf has it.” You needed to install your manager on student profiles.

What never goes on a classroom shelf

• Grades, comments, IEP/504 screenshots, attendance with addresses.
• Photos of students.
• Parent emails.
• A scan of an ID for a field trip “for a second.”
• Answer keys on a staff-shared Microsoft account.

Subs, carts, projectors, and the copier

Laptop carts: imaging may restore a default profile every night — or it may not. If students can reach a teacher profile, treat that as a lost briefcase.

Email-to-self of a student list is a cloud copy. The shelf is not the only leak. Use the SIS export tools the district named if you need a list, and do not also paste it into a personal Gmail.

Projectors and “duplicate display”: a shelf on the mirrored laptop is on the wall. Put the shelf on a monitor that is not mirrored, or hover-off during projection. The same rule streamers use, without the chat. Parents at the back of the room can read a mirrored shelf. Hover-off during conferences.

A worksheet PDF on the shelf is still on the PC after you walk to the copier. Wipe before you leave the podium, not after the period bell if the next teacher is already logging in.

USB sticks of student videos are a records problem the shelf cannot solve. Put media in the district drive. If you staged a video file on the shelf to drop into the LMS, delete the card after the upload confirms.
