ClipKeep vs Edge-Drop: Which Free Local Manager?
A new name appeared on the Microsoft Store in July 2026: ClipKeep, billed as a free, open-source, 100% local clipboard manager that stores, organizes, and searches everything copied — text, links, and code. That pitch overlaps Edge-Drop's almost exactly, so a comparison is overdue. This page states what is verified, flags what is not, and names the job each tool fits.
What ClipKeep claims (verified from the Store listing)
- Free download from the Microsoft Store (listing).
- Open-source and local-only positioning: no cloud, history stays on the PC.
- Scope: text, links, and code, with search and organization.
What we could not verify
The Store page is script-gated and exposes little beyond the pitch: no published hotkey, history limit, RAM figure, sync story, publisher repository URL, or rating count could be confirmed from public excerpts. The open-source claim has no linked repository in the material reviewed. Treat spec-sheet comparisons with ClipKeep as provisional until its repo or docs are public.
Do not confuse it with the macOS menu-bar app of the same name (Tim-the-tinkerer/ClipKeep), a native Apple-platform tool with different storage and password-manager handling. Same name, different product, different OS.
Where Edge-Drop is documented instead
Edge-Drop's side of this comparison is fully auditable: Apache-2.0, hover-activated shelf, native OLE drag-out of files and images, filters, incognito pause, and auto-delete timers. Operational RAM is heavier than tray-native tools (roughly 130–160 MB in the project's own notes).
