Edge-Drop vs Maccy: Windows Users Cannot Copy Minimalism Blindly

Edge-Drop vs Maccy: Windows Users Cannot Copy Minimalism Blindly — Edge Drop Guide

Maccy is the Mac community's favorite argument for not installing Paste. The official site, maccy.app, says it does one job: keep copy history at hand. Lightweight. Open source. No fluff. Keyboard-first. Local. If a password manager clears the clipboard, Maccy respects that. Requires macOS Sonoma 14 or newer. MIT license, github.com/p0deje/Maccy.

There is no Maccy for Windows. Switchers type "Maccy alternative Windows" and land on 400 MB suites. That is the wrong reflex. The closest *philosophy* on Windows is Win+V plus, if needed, Ditto. Edge-Drop is a different philosophy: a visual, file-aware shelf that spends RAM to make drag-out native.

Minimalism does not port as a binary. It ports as a refusal to install the wrong category.

What Maccy actually is

Author's claims:

  • Only keep history and retrieve it fast.
  • Open and search in a fraction of a second.
  • Type to filter, Enter to paste — mouse optional.
  • Native macOS UI.
  • Private, on-device store.
  • Free, inspectable source.

Maccy is what Ditto would look like if it were born on modern macOS and said no to half the options dialog. It is not a visual asset bench. It is not iCloud. It is not an expander.

What Windows already has that Maccy users forget

Win+V is closer to Maccy than Edge-Drop is.

  • Hotkey popup.
  • Recent copies.
  • Pins.
  • No extra installer if history is enabled.

The catch is Microsoft's hard contract: 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart, optional text sync. Maccy users are used to a deeper local list that survives reboot. Win+V will feel broken until those rules are named.

The first Windows install for a Maccy fan is not a shelf. It is enabling history, turning sync off, and living with 25 items for a week.

The real Windows stand-in: Ditto

If 25 items or reboot wipe is the actual pain, Ditto is the Maccy-shaped upgrade:

  • Local, no cloud, no telemetry (README).
  • Hotkey list, type to search, Enter to paste.
  • Native, small.
  • GPL-3.0, winget/GitHub.

It is uglier than Maccy. It is the same sport. CopyQ is the next step only if scripting appears on the wish list.

Where Edge-Drop fits — and where it violates minimalism

Edge-Drop is justified when the Maccy user *also* missed something Maccy is weak at on the Mac: seeing files and images as droppable objects on a Windows desktop full of OLE-aware apps.

It violates Maccy ethics when:

  • The user only pastes text.
  • 130–160 MB of Electron is a moral event.
  • Hover replaces a hotkey the user loved.
  • A visual blade becomes another always-on toy.

Installing Edge-Drop because it is "modern" is how minimalists become the people they used to mock. Installing it because Photoshop will not take a Win+V card is coherent.

Why "just make Maccy for Windows" is the wrong ticket

Windows clipboard formats, HDROP, elevated windows, and Explorer paste are not AppKit. A faithful Maccy port would still need to decide whether files are in scope. If they are not, Ditto exists. If they are, the app is no longer Maccy.

Raycast's Windows beta now includes clipboard history as a launcher feature. That is another "light" option for people who already want a launcher. It is still not Maccy, and it is still not a drag shelf. See the next article in this cluster.

A migration that respects the old taste

  1. Enable Win+V. Disable Microsoft sync.
  2. Use it until a named limit hurts (depth, reboot, files, 4 MB).
  3. If the limit is depth/search: Ditto only.
  4. If the limit is files/images as drops: Edge-Drop (or test it beside Ditto, one capturer).
  5. If the limit is "I miss Spotlight + clipboard in one chord": evaluate Raycast for Windows, knowing it is a suite.
  6. Do not install Clipboard Master "to have everything." That is the anti-Maccy.

Decision

Maccy users should steal the rules, not the chrome: local, keyboard, no fluff, respect cleared passwords. On Windows those rules point at Win+V and Ditto first. A hover shelf is allowed when the Windows-specific job — OLE drag of files and images — is on the sticky note. It is not allowed as a lifestyle upgrade.

What "respect the password manager" means on Windows

Maccy documents that if a password manager clears the clipboard, Maccy follows. Windows tools vary:

  • Win+V will store a copied password as text until the item is evicted, deleted, or the PC restarts (unless it was pinned). Microsoft does not promise to watch Bitwarden or 1Password.
  • Ditto can ignore certain applications if configured. Configure it.
  • Edge-Drop skips some password-manager clipboard formats and offers incognito. Test with the actual manager in use.
  • ClipX should not be part of this sentence.

The Maccy ethic is: history is a convenience that must lose to a vault. Recreate that ethic with settings, not with a Mac binary on Wine and not with a 2008 popup.

After the first week on Win+V, write down whether 25 items, 4 MB, or the reboot wipe actually hurt. Only then add Ditto or a shelf. Adding both on day one is how minimalists collect three histories and a Story.

Maccy also refuses fluff by refusing platforms. It will not become a Windows app to win this search query. Windows users who want that exact ethic should stop looking for a port and start deleting options: no suite, no cloud, no capture module, no expander pretending to be history. What remains is Win+V, then Ditto, then — only for drag — a shelf. That sequence is how Maccy's taste survives a platform change without pretending Windows is macOS.

If you are choosing on product lines rather than the built-in panel, Edge-Drop vs Raycast Clipboard: Dedicated App vs Launcher Feature is the honest split.
