How to Copy Text From a Website That Blocks Copying
By Khushi Yadav
Some websites actively fight your clipboard. Right-click does nothing. Text will not highlight. Ctrl+C copies an empty string. The page is using scripts or styles to block selection, not a browser bug.
This is different from messy formatting. If the problem is ads and markup coming along with your copy, that is a formatting problem: How to Copy Plain Text From a Website. This guide is for pages that refuse to give up text at all. Six methods, from least to most invasive. And one rule first.
The rule: quote, do not republish
Copy protection exists because the site owner wants control over their text. Copying a quote for research, a citation, or a personal note is normal use. Lifting whole articles to republish them elsewhere is not. Every method below is presented for the first case.
1. Turn off JavaScript for that page
Most copy blocking is JavaScript: handlers that cancel the copy event, the contextmenu event, or the selectstart event. No script, no block.
In Chrome or Edge: open the site settings for the page (the icon left of the address bar), set JavaScript to Block, and reload. The blockers stop running. Select and copy normally. Turn JavaScript back on when you leave, since many pages need it for other things.
This fails when the site needs JavaScript to render the text at all (heavy React apps). Then move to method 2 or 5.
2. Reader mode
Edge has Immersive Reader (book icon in the address bar, or F9 where offered). Firefox has Reader View. Both rebuild the article as a clean document, and the rebuild does not carry the page's copy-blocking scripts.
Select the article body in the reader view and copy. Reader mode is not offered on every page: app-like layouts, paywalls, and infinite feeds often lack the icon. The full method is in How to Copy Plain Text From a Website.
3. Print to PDF, then copy
Ctrl+P, destination Microsoft Print to PDF or Save as PDF, background graphics off. Open the PDF and copy from it. The print renderer produces a fresh document without the page's scripts.
This is slower and can reintroduce hard line wraps. The cleanup is covered in How to Copy From a PDF Without Broken Line Breaks. Use this when the live page is hostile: cookie walls, aggressive React layouts, or layered overlays.
4. A copy-unlock extension
Several small extensions exist for exactly this job. They re-enable selection, the copy event, and right-click menus on pages that disabled them. Verified examples on the Chrome Web Store:
- CopyUnlocker (version 1.7.1, updated December 20, 2025). One-click unlock from the toolbar.
- Enable Copy and Allow Right Click. Restores copy, selection, right-click, and image saving.
- Highlight Unlocker (version 1.8.3, updated March 5, 2026). One-click text selection bypass.
Two cautions, both from the listings themselves. These extensions request permission to read and change data on the sites you visit, which is exactly what they need to do their job, but it is also the permission a malicious extension would want. Prefer extensions with a visible update history, and remove the extension when the research session is over rather than leaving it enabled on every site. Some are from small publishers with low user counts, so check reviews before installing.
5. View-source and DevTools
If the text is in the page, it is in the source. Two paths:
- Ctrl+U opens view-source. The raw HTML is selectable even when the rendered page blocks selection. Find the paragraph text between the tags.
- Ctrl+Shift+I (or F12) opens DevTools. Use the element picker to click the blocked paragraph, then copy the text node from the Elements panel.
This is the most reliable method for text trapped behind layered overlays or transparent divs. It does not work when the text is rendered inside a canvas element or delivered as an image. That is method 6.
6. Screenshot and OCR
When the text is pixels, not characters, treat it as an image problem. Take a snip and run text recognition. Windows 11 has two built-in paths: Snipping Tool Text actions after a capture, and PowerToys Text Extractor (default Win+Shift+T) for grabbing text from anywhere on screen without saving a screenshot. Why sites block copying in the first place
The block is usually one of three things. A user-select: none CSS rule stops highlighting. A JavaScript handler cancels the copy or contextmenu event. Or the text sits behind a transparent overlay div that captures your clicks. Knowing which one you are facing tells you which method to try: CSS blocks fall to extensions and reader mode, event handlers fall to disabled JavaScript, overlays fall to DevTools.
Some blocks are legitimate. Exam software, banking portals, and DRM readers block copying as a security feature, and bypassing those can violate terms of service or local law. This guide is for ordinary articles, documentation, and reference pages, not for defeating proctoring or DRM.
When nothing works
If the page defeats every method above, the text is probably not text: it may be a canvas render, a scanned image, or a video. The OCR fallback (method 6) is the honest end of the road. One more option for researchers: search a distinctive sentence in quotes. The same content is often mirrored on documentation sites, forums, or archives that do not block copying. Cite the original, copy from the mirror.
After the copy lands
Blocked-site text often arrives with odd spacing or line breaks. Paste it somewhere neutral first (Notepad), clean it, then copy again. If history is on, the cleaned copy is the card worth keeping. The paste-side controls are in How to Paste Without Formatting on Windows. And if Ctrl+Shift+V fails in a specific app, that has its own fix: Ctrl+Shift+V Does Not Work Everywhere: What to Use Instead.
