How to Keep Transparent PNGs Transparent Through Paste

How to Keep Transparent PNGs Transparent Through Paste — Edge Drop Guide

A white box around a logo is usually not a broken PNG. It is a destination that pasted a flattened bitmap instead of the PNG with alpha. Windows can put several image formats on the clipboard at once. Apps pick one. The old DIB / CF_DIB family does not carry alpha the way a PNG file does.

This troubleshooting guide separates capture, clipboard formats, and destination behavior.

Microsoft’s history store is bitmap (plus text and HTML), 25 items, 4 MB, unpinned wipe on restart. A history card is a preview of a bitmap, not a guaranteed PNG-24-with-alpha. Large files miss the cap entirely.

Rule 1: a screen snip is not a transparent PNG

Win+Shift+S photographs pixels on the display. If the window is visually transparent, the snip includes whatever was behind it. The result is an opaque bitmap of a composite.

To get real alpha:

  • Export PNG from Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, or After Effects
  • Do not snip the checkerboard in Photoshop and expect the checkerboard to become alpha
  • OBS Image sources and overlays need that exported file, not a snip

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool article is about capturing the screen, not about writing an alpha channel from window composition. The editor can crop and ink. It does not recover alpha that was never captured.

Rule 2: file drop beats paste when alpha matters

PathAlpha odds
File > Place Embedded / import the .pngBest
Drag the PNG from Explorer into Photoshop, Figma desktop, many native appsGood
Ctrl+V of a copied PNG file in ExplorerDepends — some apps paste a file, others ignore HDROP
Ctrl+V after “Copy” inside an editorDepends on which formats the editor published
Ctrl+V after Win+Shift+SOpaque bitmap
Paste into Slack / Word / many web appsOften flattened or filled

Windows history stores bitmap (and text/HTML). A history card is a preview of a bitmap, not a guaranteed PNG-24-with-alpha.

Adobe’s Place Embedded path is the official “add a picture as a layer” door. Use it for logos.

How to Copy an Image So Explorer Gets a File. How to Copy an Image File So Photoshop Gets Pixels.

Why destinations flatten

Classic Windows clipboard image formats include DIB and DIBV5. Microsoft Learn documents CF_DIB and CF_DIBV5 as the preferred bitmap family. PNG as a registered clipboard format (PNG) exists and many modern apps write it. Destinations that only understand DIB composite onto white or black.

Office apps have a long history of filling transparency. Browsers require clipboard permission and may only accept a PNG item. Chat apps encode for upload and may introduce a background.

Photoshop generally pastes a new layer and can preserve alpha if the PNG clipboard format or a sensible DIBV5 was provided. If a white box appears in Photoshop, the source never put alpha on the clipboard — open the file via Place instead.

Figma desktop is more reliable than Figma in a browser for file drags. How to Paste a Snip Into Figma Without Quality Loss.

Word and PowerPoint: Insert > Pictures from the PNG file. Paste Special, if it lists PNG, is the next best. HTML paste of a remote <img> is not alpha-safe and is not offline-safe.

Checks

  1. Open the PNG in a viewer that shows checkers. If the file is already opaque, paste cannot invent alpha.
  2. In Photoshop, File > Place Embedded. If Place is clean and paste is boxed, blame the clipboard path.
  3. Paste into Paint. Paint’s legacy canvas is a poor alpha test. Use a viewer that shows checkers, or Photoshop.
  4. If only Win+V has the image, export it by pasting into Photoshop and Save a Copy as PNG, then use that file thereafter. History is not an alpha-safe archive.

Enable history if small bitmaps should be retrievable this session. Do not pin a flattened logo and treat the pin as the brand kit.

Copying from the browser

Right-click Copy image on a transparent web asset is inconsistent. Some sites serve a PNG with alpha; some serve a JPEG; some put HTML with a URL on the clipboard. Save image as and inspect the file.

A JPEG never has alpha. If the saved file is .jpg, the white box is the file.

SVG icons should travel as SVG or as an exported PNG with alpha, not as a snip. SVG vs PNG on the Clipboard.

Web Images: Drag From Browser vs Copy vs Save As.

ShareX and after-capture

ShareX Copy image to clipboard copies the image ShareX produced. If the capture was a region of the screen, there is no magic alpha. If the workflow is Background remover or an editor crop of an existing transparent file, test paste once, but still Save image to file. Official after-capture lists save and copy as separate tasks.

ShareX’s background remover is a file/image tool, not a promise that every later paste target honors alpha. Save the result. Attach or Place the file.

History and restart

Even a perfect transparent bitmap in Win+V is gone after a restart if it was unpinned, and pins are a bad logo library. Save logo-rgb.png in the brand folder.

Unpinned history clears on restart. Cloud sync will not back up the logo; sync is text.

Windows Clipboard 4 MB Cap: What Gets Dropped.

Worked example: logo on a dark slide

  1. Export logo.png from Illustrator with a transparent background.
  2. Open it in a viewer that shows checkers. Confirm alpha.
  3. Place Embedded in Photoshop on a dark fill. Edges should be clean.
  4. Ctrl+C from Explorer (the file) and Ctrl+V into PowerPoint. If a white box appears, use Insert > Pictures > This Device instead of paste.
  5. Slack: attach the file. If Slack shows white, the preview flattened; the download may still have alpha — check before blaming the export.

If step 3 is clean and step 4 is boxed, PowerPoint chose DIB. Stop pasting. Insert the file.

Premultiplied versus straight alpha

Video stills and some game engines store premultiplied alpha. Pasting into Photoshop can grow dark or light fringes. Adobe’s documentation on mattes and defringe exists for this class of problem. For UI logos, export straight (unassociated) alpha PNG from the design tool.

A screen snip is neither. It is a composite.

After Effects Copy Frame can place a PNG plus a Windows bitmap. Destinations that pick the bitmap will flatten. Premiere and After Effects: Still Frames on the Clipboard. Prefer an exported still with an explicit alpha setting when the overlay must composite later.

Email

Many mail clients flatten. Attach the PNG and also place a version already composited on the brand background for the HTML body. Two files, two jobs.

Do not snip the checkerboard and paste that into the mail body. Recipients will see checkers, or a white box, not a clever “transparency demo.”

Browser editors

Canva, Photopea, and similar tabs see what the browser allows. Grant clipboard permission or Upload the PNG. Canva, Photopea, and Browser Editors: Paste Limits. A native HDROP from Explorer is more reliable than hoping image/png survived the page.

Optional shelf

A shelf that can drag a file (not just paste a DIB) is the useful extra. Edge-Drop is optional for file drag-out. If a drop still flattens, the destination does not accept files — use that app’s import command.

Quick decision: if the logo will sit on a photograph, a video, or a dark slide, never trust the first Ctrl+V. Place or Insert the PNG, then look at the edges at 200% zoom. Fringes mean the wrong alpha interpretation. A white rectangle means the destination ignored PNG entirely. Recopying the same flattened bitmap will not restore alpha. Go back to the exported file.

If you are choosing on product lines rather than the built-in panel, Notification Click vs Clipboard for Snips is the honest split.
