Copy Slack or Teams Messages Without Names and Timestamps

To copy a single Slack or Teams message without the sender's name and time, select only the words inside that one message and press Ctrl+C. Names and timestamps sit in the message header, so they come along when your selection starts above the text or runs into the next message. For a longer conversation, paste it into Notepad first, delete the name and time lines (by hand or with a short PowerShell filter), and then copy the cleaned text into your ticket, email or document.

Why names and timestamps come along

Slack, Teams and Discord display each message with a header: display name, time, sometimes an "edited" label, reactions and reply counts. When you drag-select across two messages, everything between them is part of the selection, so headers and reaction counts are copied too. A copy can also include formatting, links and mentions that look harmless in the chat but leak details elsewhere.

Copy one message without the header

Slack (desktop or browser)

1. Click just after the last word of the message, then drag back to the first word. Starting at the end makes it easier to stop before the name line.
2. Press Ctrl+C.
3. Paste where you need it. If formatting comes along, paste as plain text instead (see below).

Microsoft Teams (desktop)

Microsoft's instructions for desktop are to select the text in a message and use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, or right-click to copy and paste. Select inside the message bubble only and the header stays behind.

On Teams mobile, press and hold a message and choose Copy text to copy its text.

Discord and other web chats

The same rule applies: select inside one message, not across messages. Test the result in Notepad before you rely on it for anything formal.

To share a pointer to the message rather than its text, Teams offers Copy link in the message's More options menu. The link only opens for members of that chat, so use it for internal notes, not for customers.

Clean a longer conversation

When you need several messages, accept that headers will come along and clean them up afterwards.

1. Select the messages and press Ctrl+C.
2. Paste into Notepad with Ctrl+V. Notepad keeps only plain text, so formatting, avatars and link styling are gone.
3. Delete name lines, time lines, reaction counts and "edited" labels.
4. Replace @mentions with plain names, or remove them, so a later paste into chat doesn't ping anyone.
5. Select all (Ctrl+A) and copy the cleaned text.

Remove time-only lines with PowerShell

If the times landed on lines of their own, this command removes lines that contain only a time such as 10:42 AM, 11:07 pm or [9:05], and puts the rest back on the clipboard:

Lines that mention a time inside a sentence ("ping me at 10:42") are kept. Time formats vary by app and region, so check the result before pasting. Names are harder to match safely; delete those by hand or with a find-and-replace for each name.

Paste as plain text into Word, Outlook or a ticket

Quote it without oversharing

Decide how much attribution the reader needs, and write it yourself instead of keeping the chat's header.

"The export job failed again on staging." (customer report, ticket 18442)

For an external audience, paraphrase when the exact wording doesn't matter:

One customer reported that the export job failed on staging.

Before you paste, check the text for things chat logs often contain: one-time codes, temporary passwords, email addresses, phone numbers and internal links. Remove anything the destination's audience shouldn't see. In Markdown destinations, put > at the start of each quoted line to make a block quote.

Clear the copy afterwards

Your clipboard, and clipboard history if it's on, now holds the raw chat text. If it contained personal or sensitive details:

1. Press Win+V, select See more (...) next to the item and choose Delete, or select Clear all to clear unpinned items. Do this before you share your screen in a call; using clipboard history in meetings covers the routine.
2. Don't pin chat excerpts. Pinned items survive restarts and Clear all.

FAQ

Why does the name still come along when I copy one message?

The selection started on or above the header line. Start the selection after the last word and drag back to the first word, so it never reaches the name and time.

Why does a pasted Teams message bring odd formatting into Outlook?

Outlook used the formatted (HTML) version of the copy. Undo and paste with Keep Text Only, or paste into Notepad first.

Does Windows clipboard history keep the formatting of chat copies?

Clipboard history stores text and HTML, so a chat copy keeps its formatting in history until it's pushed out, cleared or the PC restarts.
