How to Turn Hover Off and Use Only the Hotkey
Edge-Drop's hover trigger is the fastest way to open the shelf, but it is not the only way. The default toggle hotkey is Alt+C, and the shelf can be configured to open only on that hotkey, ignoring all cursor travel to the screen edge. This article covers how to turn hover off, when hotkey-only mode is the right choice, how it pairs with fullscreen suppression, and what to do if Alt+C conflicts with another app. For the upstream decision — whether to tune hover first or skip it entirely — see how to tune hover sensitivity in Edge-Drop. For the remapping path, see how to change the Edge-Drop toggle hotkey.
Why hotkey-only mode exists
Hover is the right trigger for users whose hands are usually on the mouse. It is the wrong trigger for several other workflows:
- Tablet and stylus input. A stylus resting near the screen edge, or a stray touch during inking, opens the shelf unintentionally. See tablet mode and accidental edge opens.
- Full-screen games. The cursor parked at the edge during a game should not pop the shelf. Edge-Drop already suppresses hover in fullscreen via
SHQueryUserNotificationState, but hotkey-only mode is a stronger guarantee. See how to keep Edge-Drop quiet in fullscreen games. - Keyboard-first workflows. A developer or writer who lives in the keyboard wants the shelf on a chord, not on a mouse trip to the edge.
- Presentations and screen sharing. The cursor lands near the edge frequently during a demo; hotkey-only mode prevents the shelf from appearing on the shared screen.
- Multi-monitor layouts where the trigger edge is the seam. The cursor crosses the seam constantly when moving between monitors; hotkey-only mode avoids the false opens.
In each case, the user wants the shelf on demand, not on cursor proximity. Hotkey-only mode is the explicit opt-in.
Where the setting lives
The Hover open toggle is in the Behaviour tab of the Edge-Drop settings panel. To open the panel:
- Click the Edge-Drop tray icon and choose Settings.
- Or open the shelf with the toggle hotkey (default
Alt+C) and click the gear icon. - Or right-click the shelf and choose Settings.
In the panel, switch to the Behaviour tab. The first control is Hover open — a simple on/off toggle. Turn it off to disable hover entirely. The shelf then opens only when the configured hotkey is pressed.
The steps to disable hover
- Open the settings panel and go to the Behaviour tab.
- Under Hover open, toggle to Off.
- Confirm the Hotkey field shows the desired chord (default
Alt+C). - Close the settings panel.
- Test by moving the cursor to the configured edge — the shelf should not open.
- Test by pressing the hotkey — the shelf should open.
The setting takes effect immediately. There is no Apply button. The choice is written to config.json under %APPDATA%\Edge-Drop\ as soon as the change is made. For the on-disk layout, see where Edge-Drop stores data on disk.
What changes when hover is off
Turning hover off changes only the trigger. The shelf itself behaves identically:
- The shelf still opens on the configured edge of the chosen monitor.
- The shelf still anchors to the chosen edge (Left or Right) of the chosen monitor — see how to move the Edge-Drop shelf to the right edge.
- The shelf still captures the same set of formats (text, links, images, files).
- Click-to-paste still does not steal focus, because the
WS_EX_NOACTIVATEstyle is independent of the trigger. - The shelf still auto-suppresses during fullscreen games if Suppress in fullscreen is on. With hover off, this is redundant for the trigger but the suppression flag still affects other behaviours (e.g., tray notifications). Leave it on.
What does change:
- The shelf no longer opens on cursor dwell at the screen edge.
- The shelf no longer auto-closes when the cursor leaves (hover-off close becomes a no-op). To close the shelf, press the hotkey again, press
Esc, or click on empty space inside the shelf. - The trigger strip width and dwell time settings become irrelevant. They are still in the Position and Behaviour tabs respectively, but they have no effect while Hover open is off.
Pairing with the hotkey
The default hotkey is Alt+C. When the shelf is closed, pressing Alt+C opens it. When the shelf is open, pressing Alt+C closes it. The hotkey is a toggle, not a one-shot opener.
The hotkey does not steal focus. Edge-Drop uses WS_EX_NOACTIVATE, so the shelf opens without changing the foreground window — useful when the user wants to paste into the editor they were just typing in. For the full click-to-paste workflow, see how to click-to-paste without stealing focus.
If Alt+C conflicts with another app — common conflicts include terminal multiplexers, IDE shortcuts, and games that bind Alt+C to a command — see how to change the Edge-Drop toggle hotkey for the remapping path. The remap is a separate setting in the Behaviour tab.
When hotkey-only mode is the wrong choice
Hotkey-only mode is not a universal improvement. It is wrong when:
- The user's hands are usually on the mouse. A keyboard chord is slower than a mouse trip to the edge for mouse-first workflows. Keep hover on.
- The user's hotkey is already crowded.
Alt+Cis taken,Alt+Vis taken by some clipboard tools,Ctrl+Shift+Vis taken by paste-without-formatting. Picking a non-conflicting chord that is also ergonomic is harder than it sounds. If the user cannot find a free chord, hover is the better choice. - The user wants the shelf to appear without active intent. Some workflows benefit from the shelf being visible whenever the cursor is near the edge — for example, a designer dragging assets into Photoshop wants the shelf to open as the cursor approaches the edge, not on a separate hotkey press. Keep hover on.
Combining hotkey-only with fullscreen suppression
The recommended combination for game and presentation users is:
- Behaviour tab → Hover open → Off.
- Behaviour tab → Suppress in fullscreen → On (default).
With hover off, the shelf does not open on cursor dwell at any time. With Suppress in fullscreen on, even if the user presses the hotkey during a fullscreen game, the shelf will not appear (depending on the suppression level — confirm the current behaviour in the version installed). The combination gives a strong guarantee that the shelf stays out of the way during games and presentations.
For the longer treatment, see gaming fullscreen and clipboard hotkeys and how to keep Edge-Drop quiet in fullscreen games.
Pairing with launch at login
If the user has invested in hotkey-only mode, they are likely a keyboard-first user who wants the shelf available from the moment Windows starts. Confirm that Launch at login is on in the Behaviour tab (default on for packaged builds). If it is off, the shelf is unavailable until Edge-Drop is manually launched. See how to launch Edge-Drop at login for the full treatment.
Troubleshooting hotkey-only mode
A few failure modes specific to hotkey-only mode:
- The hotkey does not open the shelf. Confirm Hover open is off and the Hotkey field shows the expected chord. Confirm no other app is consuming the chord before Edge-Drop receives it (e.g., a global hotkey tool, a window manager, an IME). Test with a different chord to isolate the conflict.
- The shelf opens on hover despite Hover open being off. A second Edge-Drop instance may be running with hover on (e.g., both a Store build and a GitHub build). Quit one. See how to uninstall Edge-Drop cleanly.
- The hotkey works but the shelf appears on the wrong monitor. The Monitor setting in the Position tab is independent of the trigger. Re-select the monitor. See how to pick which monitor Edge-Drop uses.
- The setting reverts after restart. Same cause: a second instance overwriting
config.json. Uninstall one. - The shelf does not auto-close when the cursor leaves. This is expected with hover off. Press the hotkey again, press
Esc, or click empty space inside the shelf to close it.
What hotkey-only mode does not change
Disabling hover does not change:
- Capture behaviour (text, links, images, files still captured).
- History retention (pinned items still survive restart).
- Drag-out support (real OS file handles still used).
- Click-to-paste without focus stealing (
WS_EX_NOACTIVATEstill active). - Fullscreen suppression (still active, redundant with hover off but harmless).
- Password-manager concealment (still respected via
CF_CLIPBOARD_VIEWER_IGNORE).
For the broader behaviour, see Edge-Drop settings map: Behaviour, Position, Appearance.
When NOT to keep Edge-Drop on hotkey-only
Even with hover off, Edge-Drop is still a 130–160 MB Electron app. The cases where the user should reconsider Edge-Drop entirely are the same as for hover-on mode:
- The machine has 4 GB of RAM. Ditto or Win+V is lighter. See how much RAM a clipboard manager should use.
- The user needs cloud sync. Edge-Drop has no cloud sync. Win+V with sync on (and the privacy trade-off) is the right pick. See when not to use Edge-Drop.
- The user needs scripting. CopyQ is the right pick.
- The user needs text expansion. Espanso or PhraseExpress is the right pick.
Switching the trigger does not change these constraints.
Summary
Turning hover off is a single-toggle change in the Behaviour tab. After the change, the shelf opens only on the configured hotkey (default Alt+C), the cursor's position at the screen edge is irrelevant, and the trigger strip and dwell settings have no effect. Hotkey-only mode is the right choice for tablet, stylus, fullscreen-game, presentation, and keyboard-first workflows. Pair it with Suppress in fullscreen for a stronger guarantee during games, and confirm Launch at login is on so the shelf is available from Windows start. If Alt+C conflicts with another app, remap it before relying on hotkey-only mode.
