How to Uninstall Edge Drop Cleanly

To uninstall Edge Drop, quit it from the tray icon, then go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Edge Drop, select More (...) and choose Uninstall. For a clean removal, also turn off Launch at login before you uninstall, and afterwards check whether the %APPDATA%\Edge-Drop folder is still there; that folder holds your clipboard history and settings for the GitHub build.

Before you uninstall

1. Turn off Launch at login. Right-click the Edge Drop tray icon, select Settings, and on the Behaviour tab turn off Launch at login, so Windows no longer starts Edge Drop when you sign in.
2. Clear your history (optional). If you're handing the PC to someone else, open the shelf and use the Clear menu's Clear all history. Pinned items aren't removed this way; unpin them first, or delete the data folder in the steps below.
3. Quit Edge Drop. Right-click the tray icon and select Quit Edge-Drop.

Uninstall the app

Use whichever is quicker:

• Settings: Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Edge Drop, select More (...) > Uninstall, and confirm.
• Start menu: Open Start > All apps, right-click Edge Drop, and select Uninstall.

Search the list for "Edge": the GitHub build uses the name Edge-Drop and installs per user, usually to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Edge-Drop; the Microsoft Store build is named Edge Drop. The Start menu method works the same way on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Remove leftover data (GitHub build)

The GitHub build keeps its data in your user profile, separate from the program files:

1. Press Win+R, type %APPDATA% and press Enter.
2. Look for a folder named Edge-Drop.
3. If it's there, delete it.

That folder contains the history index (items.json), settings (settings.json), captured images (images), full text of long clips (payloads) and drag staging files (temp). The history index is encrypted to your Windows account, but images, long-text files and settings are plain files, so delete the folder if you don't want them left on the PC. Keep the folder instead if you plan to reinstall and want your history and pins back. Because the index is tied to your Windows account, the folder won't carry your history to another PC; backing up or moving Edge Drop history explains what does work.

Then empty the Recycle Bin if the folder went there.

Remove leftover data (Microsoft Store build)

The Store build's data is redirected by Windows into a private folder inside the app package (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Deepender.EdgeDrop_...\LocalCache). Microsoft documents that when a packaged app is uninstalled, Windows removes that redirected data along with the app.

One location sits outside that: the Store build stages dragged images in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp\Edge-Drop. If that folder is still there after uninstalling, delete it.

If uninstalling from Settings fails, you can remove the package from PowerShell. This lists the package, then removes it for your account:

Check the startup entry is gone

1. Select Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
2. Check that Edge Drop isn't listed.

If you uninstalled without turning off Launch at login first and an Edge Drop entry is still listed, switch its toggle off. Task Manager's Startup apps tab shows the same list with Enable and Disable buttons.

FAQ

Does uninstalling delete my copied files?

No. Edge Drop stores only references to files you copied, never the files themselves, so your documents and folders are untouched.

Does uninstalling clear Windows clipboard history?

Is deleting the folder enough before selling my PC?
