How to Wipe Clipboard Data Before Selling a PC

How to Wipe Clipboard Data Before Selling a PC — Edge Drop Guide

Microsoft’s sell-or-gift guidance is to back up what matters, then Reset this PC and remove personal files. That reset is the real wipe. Clipboard steps still belong before the reset, for two reasons.

First, Clear clipboard data also reaches the cloud copy of unpinned items when device sync was used. A reset of one laptop does not automatically tidy every other device still signed into the same Microsoft account.

Second, third-party managers keep their own databases. A reset removes them if the drive is cleaned. A “just delete my files” hand-off might not.

This checklist assumes Windows 11. Windows 10 mainstream support ended October 14, 2025. Remaining Windows 10 PCs use the same clipboard ideas with older Settings labels.

Windows history, when enabled, holds text, HTML, and bitmap, 25 items, 4 MB each. It is off until enabled. Files copied in Explorer are not history cards, but they may still sit on disk in Documents. The reset handles the files. This page handles the clipboard-shaped leftovers.

Step 1 — Stop new uploads

On the PC being sold:

  1. Start > Settings > System > Clipboard.
  2. Set Clipboard history across your devices Off.
  3. Leave Automatically sync text that I copy unselected.

leave Microsoft clipboard sync off.

If the same Microsoft account is signed into a keeper PC, turn sync off there too until the sale is done, or at least avoid copying secrets.

Step 2 — Clear Windows history and pins

Microsoft Support:

  1. Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear clipboard data > Clear. This clears unpinned items on the device and, when sync was used, the cloud copy.
  2. Press Win+V. Use Clear all as a second pass.
  3. Any remaining pinned cards: … > Delete on each. Pins survive Clear.

If history was never enabled, Win+V still shows the first-run prompt or an empty state. The live clipboard can still hold the last Ctrl+C. Copy a harmless word such as wiped after clearing so the last item is not a password.

Step 3 — Unlink phones and keyboards

Step 4 — Remove third-party clipboard databases

Uninstall is not always a delete of AppData.

Typical locations (names vary by version):

  • Ditto — database under the user’s AppData; the project documents a local SQLite-style store.
  • CopyQ — configuration and tab data under the user’s profile.
  • Clipdiary, ArsClip, Clipboard Fusion, and similar — each has a data folder.
  • Edge-Drop — local item store under the app’s AppData (JSON on disk). Uninstall plus a check of that folder.

Steps that work for any of them:

  1. Open the app and use its official Delete all / Exit and clear if it has one.
  2. Exit the app from the tray so the file is not locked.
  3. Uninstall from Settings > Apps.
  4. Search the user profile for leftover folders named after the app and delete them.
  5. Empty Recycle Bin.

Do not keep a “just in case” copy of a clipboard database on the drive that will be sold.

Password managers are not clipboard managers, but they may have written a secret to the OS clipboard. Their vaults live in their own cloud or local files. Sign out, then uninstall if the buyer should not inherit a logged-in session. Bitwarden, 1Password, and KeePass: Clipboard Best Settings.

Step 5 — Sign out of the Microsoft account on this PC

Settings > Accounts. Sign out of the Microsoft account after OneDrive files needed for the next machine have been confirmed elsewhere. Clipboard cloud items are account-scoped. Leaving the account signed in on a sold PC is a larger problem than Win+V.

Microsoft’s “Before you recycle, sell, or gift your Xbox or Windows PC” article is the official reminder to remove personal info.

Step 6 — Reset this PC the way Microsoft describes for a sale

  1. Back up files that should be kept. Clipboard history is not a backup.
  2. Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC.
  3. Choose Remove everything.
  4. If the PC will be sold, donated, or recycled, enable Clean data when Windows offers it. Microsoft’s Reset article states that option removes files and cleans the drive and “makes it harder for other people to recover files you’ve removed.” It takes longer. That is the point.

A simple “keep my files” reset is the wrong choice for a sale.

BitLocker-encrypted drives still need the reset (or a full disk wipe) so the buyer receives a clean install. Do not write the BitLocker recovery key on a sticky note in the box.

Step 7 — Other devices still signed in

On every keeper PC and phone that used the same Microsoft account:

  1. Win+V and delete anything that looks like it came from the sold machine.
  2. Clear clipboard data once more.
  3. Confirm sync is in the intended state (usually Off on shared identities). Shared Microsoft Accounts and Clipboard Sync Leaks.

Unpinned history on those keepers will still clear on their next restart. Pins will not. Hunt pins by hand.

What Reset does not excuse

  • A second physical disk that was never the system drive. Remove it or wipe it separately.
  • External SSDs and USB keys used as “clipboard overflow.”
  • Cloud services (OneDrive, email, password vaults) that still hold the same secrets in proper storage. Those are not clipboard problems; they still need account hygiene.
  • A buyer who is handed the PIN on a sticky note. Change it; better, reset.

Healthcare and finance devices

If the PC processed PHI or cardholder data, follow the organization’s media-sanitization procedure first. HHS and PCI expect documented disposal, not a blog checklist. Healthcare and Finance: Clipboard Rules of Thumb. The Windows Reset + Clean data path is the consumer-grade floor, not a hospital standard.

Optional: confirm the live clipboard is boring

After the last clear and before Reset:

  1. Copy ready-for-reset.
  2. Win+V should show at most that string (if history is still on) or stay empty.
  3. Paste into Notepad. Only that string should appear.

Then start Reset. Do not copy a password “one last time” to a note.

After the buyer’s first boot

The new owner will see a first-run Windows. Clipboard history is off again until they enable it. That is the factory default. There is nothing more the seller can pin.

If a local shelf such as Edge-Drop was used, it should already be uninstalled. A hover shelf is only an honest next step on a keeper PC that still needs to drag images into other apps. It has no role on a machine that is leaving the building.
