What Microsoft Drop actually was

It was a self-chat in the browser. You dropped a screenshot from a phone into the pane and opened it on a PC. You typed a tracking number on the laptop and read it on the phone. The backend was OneDrive, not a local clipboard database.

Retirement did not “move Drop into Win+V.” Windows clipboard history is a separate OS feature: 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart, optional text sync on the same Microsoft or work account. After 152:

• Files and images already sent through Drop: look in OneDrive.
• Text notes: the Canary/Stable banners told you to download them *before* the pane vanished. There is no supported “show Drop again” toggle in Edge 153.

What the clipboard shelf actually is

The Store/GitHub app is a hover shelf. The desktop stays click-through until the cursor dwells on a thin edge zone (or you use the hotkey). Cards appear for what you copied: text, links, images, files. You can pin, search, filter (All / Text / Links / Images / Files), group items into stacks (documented max 10), and drag a card into another desktop app.

The important mechanism is OLE drag-out. The shelf does not pretend an HTML5 ghost is a file. It hands the target app a real OS file handle so Explorer, Word, Slack, Photoshop, and similar drop targets can accept it the way they accept a drag from Explorer.

That is a same-PC workflow. It does not upload the PDF to your phone. It does not appear inside iOS Edge. Treating it as “Drop 2.0 from Microsoft” is how you waste an afternoon.

Documented extras that still are not a phone bridge: incognito pause, auto-delete windows, clear-unpinned-on-restart, skip of common password-manager formats, DPAPI / safeStorage for the on-disk index. Electron RAM is roughly 130–160 MB in the project’s own notes. 0.3.1 (8 September 2026) added an emoji picker on the filter bar, UI refresh, full URLs on link cards, duplicate-capture fixes, autostart hardening, and 31 languages + RTL.

Comparison tables on the internet will try to score both products on the same rows. Most of those rows are invented.

Do not expect the shelf to:

• Sign into a Microsoft account
• Show a card on a phone
• Keep a Drop-style conversation history in the cloud
• Survive you leaving the house without the files already on the PC
• Replace Nearby Share, Phone Link, or LocalSend

Do not expect retired Microsoft Drop to have:

• Hover-open on the monitor edge
• Filters for All / Text / Links / Images / Files
• Stacks you merge and split
• Native drag-out of an old screenshot into Premiere
• A local-only, no-account install

If a page claims “Edge Drop now does both,” it is mixing publishers. Microsoft did not replace the pane with the Store clipboard app. Deepender Yadav did not ship a OneDrive client.

When you still need a pipe between devices

Cross-device is a transport problem. Honest tools:

When Edge Drop fits / does not

Stay on Win+V when 25 text/HTML/bitmap cards and a reboot wipe are enough, and files are pasted immediately in Explorer.

The shelf fits when the pain is visual staging: four screenshots, a PDF, two links, drag them into a ticket or a canvas without recopying. That is the job edgedrop.app documents.

Do not use Edge Drop if:

• You needed the retired OneDrive Drop thread on a phone or second PC.
• You needed a Microsoft-supported browser feature.
• You only needed 25 recent texts and a restart wipe as a privacy default.
• You needed Ditto search or CopyQ scripts.
• You cannot accept Electron RAM on a small laptop.
• You planned to run it *and* another clipboard logger “just in case.”

Do not run two clipboard-history watchers at once. Pick Win+V, Ditto, or the shelf as the history owner. Sharing apps (LocalSend, OneDrive) are not history watchers.
