What Happened to Microsoft Edge Drop in 2026?

What happened to Edge Drop Microsoft is a retirement, not a hidden setting. Microsoft Edge Drop was a sidebar and toolbar pane in the Edge browser that sent notes, photos, and files to your other PCs and phones on the same Microsoft account. Content lived in OneDrive. Edge 152, shipped to Stable as 152.0.4191.53 on 27 August 2026, removed the pane. Microsoft’s notes say: “Drop is retired. We’re simplifying Microsoft Edge.”

edgedrop.app is a different product: a free Apache-2.0 clipboard shelf for Windows 10/11 by Deepender Yadav. Hover the screen edge or press Alt+C. Stage text, links, images, and files. Drag them out with real OLE handles. No Microsoft account. No OneDrive. No telemetry of copies. It was not removed in Edge 152 because it never lived in Edge.

If you opened Edge looking for the Drop icon and found nothing, you lost a cross-device sharing pane. If you wanted a clipboard shelf on one PC, you were never looking at Microsoft’s feature.

What happened to Edge Drop Microsoft in 2026

Microsoft did not merge Drop into Win+V, Copilot, or the Microsoft Store clipboard app. It ended a browser feature and pointed people at OneDrive for files they had already sent.

The job Drop actually did:

• You signed into Edge with a Microsoft account.
• You dropped a note, screenshot, or file into a thread in the sidebar or a toolbar pin.
• The same thread appeared on other Edge clients on that account.
• Files sat in OneDrive. Text notes lived in the Drop UI.

That is “email yourself” with a running thread. It is not clipboard history. It does not hover a monitor edge. It does not drag an old PDF into Photoshop with an OLE file handle.

After 152, the pane is gone on the Stable path. Rolling Edge back to 151 is not a supported long-term plan. Checking edge://settings/appearance for a toolbar pin will not restore it.

Timeline: Edge Drop removed

Verify on Microsoft Edge Stable release notes, version 152 section. Press coverage from Windows Central and How-To Geek matches the banner wording. Treat forum rumors as secondary.

Where is Edge Drop in Edge now?

It is not hidden. After 152, the Drop pane is gone.

What you still have:

1. Open OneDrive (File Explorer folder or the web UI) and search for files and images you previously sent through Drop. Microsoft said those attachments remain in OneDrive.
2. If you downloaded text notes when the retirement banner offered a Download text export (typically a .txt file), those notes are on disk wherever you saved them.
3. If you skipped the download, Microsoft did not promise a later restore of the thread. Do not expect Edge 153+ to replay Drop history.

Phone notifications from Drop also stop with the pane. Pairing a phone through Phone Link is a separate Microsoft product. It did not inherit the Drop thread.

Files in OneDrive vs text notes

This split is the part people miss.

Files and images. Microsoft treated Drop attachments as OneDrive objects. A PDF you sent from a work PC should still be in that account’s OneDrive, subject to normal OneDrive retention, quota, and sharing rules. Look there before you assume deletion.

Text notes. The retirement banners in Canary and in the Edge 151 notes told you to download text separately. Windows Latest and other coverage described a Download text control that exported notes to a .txt file. That export was a deadline, not a forever archive. After 152, the UI that held the thread is gone.

Do not confuse this with Windows clipboard history. Win+V is an OS feature: 25 copied entries, 4 MB per item, text / HTML / bitmap only, unpinned items wiped on restart, optional text sync on the same Microsoft or work account. How this differs from edgedrop.app

Search, Product Hunt, and some press used “Edge Drop” for both products. The Store listing for the shelf is 9P3JMHN9M4NR. The GitHub repo is Deepender25/Edge-Drop. Publisher is Deepender Yadav, license Apache-2.0. Microsoft did not write it.

The shelf captures text, URLs, rich HTML, images, and multi-file Explorer copies. Cards can be pinned, filtered (All / Text / Links / Images / Files), stacked, and dragged out with native OLE handles into Explorer, Word, Slack, or Photoshop. Default hotkey Alt+C. History stays on the local profile. GitHub NSIS builds auto-update from Releases; Store MSIX builds update through the Store. Current public version around this writing is 0.3.1 (8 September 2026).

What to use instead of the retired pane

You wanted phone ↔ PC notes and files (Microsoft Drop’s job)

• LocalSend — open-source, same Wi-Fi, no account.
• Windows Nearby Share / Android Quick Share — short-range OS send.
• Microsoft Phone Link — photos, some clipboard, depends on pairing and account.
• OneDrive, email-to-self, or a self-hosted Drop-shaped app if you want a durable cloud copy.

You wanted a clipboard shelf on this PC (edgedrop.app’s job)

• Built-in Win+V for 25 text/HTML/bitmap items, 4 MB, unpinned wipe on restart.
• The hover shelf for staging, stacks, pins, filters, and OLE drag-out of files and images.
• Ditto or CopyQ if you want a tray history or scripts, not a shelf.

No honest tool does both without cloud or a LAN share. A clipboard manager that never leaves the PC cannot replace OneDrive Drop. A sharing app cannot give Photoshop a native file drag from a hover strip.

A ten-minute check:

1. Write down the last time “Drop” failed you: device hop, or clipboard overwrite?
2. If device hop: send a 2 MB photo with LocalSend. If that is the job, stop shopping clipboard apps.
3. If overwrite/staging: enable Win+V. Copy a paragraph, a screenshot under 4 MB, and five files in Explorer. Note what the panel actually shows.
4. If files and drag-out are the gap, that is a shelf job, not a browser pane.

When Edge Drop fits / does not

The shelf fits when you already work on one Windows 10/11 PC, you stage screenshots and files into desktop apps, and you accept an Electron process (project notes roughly 130–160 MB RAM) for hover plus OLE drag-out. It is local, no account, Store id 9P3JMHN9M4NR.

Do not use Edge Drop if:

• You needed Microsoft’s phone ↔ PC Drop thread. The shelf will not appear in iOS Edge or upload to OneDrive.
• You only overwrite a password field and should not keep history at all.
• You need Ditto-class search of thousands of strings on a tiny native process.
• You need CopyQ scripts, ShareX capture, or PhraseExpress expansions.
• IT bans third-party clipboard monitors.
• You are on macOS or Linux.

Do not run two clipboard-history watchers at once. Pick Win+V, Ditto, or the shelf as the history owner. Sharing apps (LocalSend, OneDrive) are not history watchers.

FAQ

Did Microsoft delete my Drop files? Microsoft said files shared through Drop are saved in OneDrive. Text notes needed a separate download before retirement. Check OneDrive first, then any .txt export you saved from the banner.

Is edgedrop.app the replacement Microsoft shipped? No. Microsoft did not replace Drop with the Store clipboard shelf. Different publisher, different job, no OneDrive thread.

Can I still find Drop in Edge 153? Not as a supported feature. Stable 152 retired it. Later majors do not restore it, and unsupported rollback is not a plan.

Will turning on Win+V bring Drop back? No. Win+V is a 25-item local history of text, HTML, and bitmaps. It does not recreate a cross-device Drop conversation.
