Edge Drop: GitHub Installer or Microsoft Store — Which Should You Get?

Edge Drop GitHub vs Microsoft Store is a packaging choice, not a different clipboard. Both installs are the same Apache-2.0 hover shelf from Deepender Yadav: text, links, images, files, stacks, pin, search, filters, OLE drag-out. Hover the edge or press Alt+C. No account. No cloud clipboard. No telemetry of copies. Windows 10/11.

The channels differ in how the bits arrive and how they update. The GitHub README states it plainly: Store package — automatic background updates and native sandbox; Windows installer — standalone setup with a built-in auto-updater.

Edge Drop GitHub vs Microsoft Store: what you actually download

Both are free. Electron still costs RAM (project notes roughly 130–160 MB) on either channel.

Do not invent “the Store is always N days behind.” Certification and Store rollout vary. If you care about a specific release (for example 0.3.1 on 8 September 2026), read the GitHub release notes and the Store listing’s version field on the day you install. That is the only accurate lag number.

How updates actually work

GitHub NSIS. The project’s updater runs on GitHub builds. Current notes describe background download and a Restart to Update control. Store builds are isolated in the pipeline so they do not ship that GitHub updater (isStoreBuild()). That is a Store policy / packaging split, not a feature the shelf quietly loses. Store MSIX. Windows updates Store apps on the Store’s schedule. You can also open Microsoft Store → Library and check for updates. You are trusting Microsoft’s delivery of a third-party package. If IT only allows Store apps, that decision is already made. If you sideload the .exe on a locked-down image, you own the SmartScreen and allow-list conversation.

Decision guide

Work the list. Stop at the first match.

1. Does this PC only allow Microsoft Store apps? → Store.
2. Is GitHub.com blocked, but the Store works? → Store.
3. Do you want the in-app “restart to update” flow from GitHub Releases, including seeing the release the moment it is published there? → GitHub NSIS.
4. Are you allergic to SmartScreen “unrecognized app” on a new publisher .exe? → Store is usually the calmer path. A new GitHub publisher often gets a More info → Run anyway prompt. That is reputation, not an automatic malware verdict. Hash-check the asset if the release publishes a SHA-256.
5. Do you want Windows to treat the install as a packaged app (MSIX sandbox, Store uninstall, Store startup task rules)? → Store.
6. Do you want a normal Win32-style install you can put where you like, with the project’s own updater? → GitHub.
7. Still unsure? → Store on a shared family PC. GitHub if you already live in Releases for other tools and will actually click Restart to Update.

Do not install both. Two copies of a clipboard watcher on one user session is how you get duplicate cards and confusing autostart.

Where the data lives (both channels)

History is per Windows user profile, not “in the cloud because you used the Store.” The project stores an encrypted index and disk payloads under the app’s AppData tree. Switching channels does not magically migrate or wipe that folder unless you uninstall and delete it. If you switch GitHub → Store, uninstall the NSIS build first, then install the MSIX, then confirm you do not have two autostart entries (Settings → Apps → Startup). GitHub builds may show a “Restart to Update” control after a Release. Store builds will not show that GitHub banner; look in Microsoft Store → Library instead. Seeing no in-app updater on a Store install is expected, not a broken download.

Win+V remains a separate OS list: 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart. Neither installer changes those Microsoft rules.

SmartScreen, hashes, and enterprise allow-lists

A new publisher’s NSIS installer often hits Windows SmartScreen. “More info → Run anyway” is a reputation gate. Compare SHA-256 to the GitHub Release if a hash is published. The Store path skips that dance because Microsoft delivered the package — still read the publisher line. A Store listing is not a Microsoft-authored clipboard.

Work images sometimes allow Store apps and block random .exe files. That is the entire decision. Don’t open a ticket for the GitHub updater if the GPO already answers “no.” Don’t sideload the NSIS build and then complain that Defender quarantined an unsigned-looking new file — check the signature on the actual asset.

Hobby machines that already install tools from GitHub Releases should use the NSIS channel and actually click Restart to Update. An ignored updater is worse than the Store’s slower-but-automatic path.

What is *not* different

People ask which build “has drag-out,” “has hover,” or “has search.” Those are product features, not channel features. If a Store screenshot looks older than a GitHub screenshot, you are looking at two *versions*, not two apps. Check the version string; don’t invent a permanent feature gap.

Both builds:

• Hover edge or Alt+C (hotkey is configurable in current versions)
• Capture text, links, images, files
• Stacks, pin, search, filters
• OLE drag-out
• No account, no cloud clipboard

The Store does not magically make it a 8 MB native tray app. If you need tiny, use Win+V or Ditto.

Windows 10 mainstream support ended 14 October 2025. The app still lists Windows 10/11. An unsupported OS is its own risk, independent of Store vs GitHub.

When Edge Drop fits / does not

The shelf fits either channel when you want a local hover clipboard and you pick the delivery path your PC already allows.

Do not use Edge Drop if:

• You needed Microsoft’s retired OneDrive Drop on a phone.
• You planned to install both channels “to be safe.”
• IT forbids third-party clipboard tools, Store or not.
• You wanted a tiny native tray (Ditto) or 25-item OS history only (Win+V).
• You will ignore updates on the GitHub channel and also refuse the Store.

Does the Store build auto-update? Yes, through the Microsoft Store, not through the GitHub in-app updater.

Can I switch later? Uninstall one channel fully (and don’t leave two autostart entries), then install the other. Don’t run them side by side.

Is the Store build a Microsoft app? No. Microsoft delivers a third-party MSIX. Publisher is Deepender Yadav. Edge 152 retired a different browser feature named Drop.
