What Is Edge Drop? The Product Hunt Clipboard Shelf Explained

What is edgedrop.app? One-liner: edgedrop.app is a free Apache-2.0 local-first clipboard shelf for Windows 10/11 — hover the screen edge or press Alt+C — and it is not Microsoft’s retired Edge Drop sharing pane.

That sentence is the disambiguation. Everything else is what the Product Hunt listing actually ships, what it refuses to be, and who should stay on Win+V.

This is not a review roundup. You will not find invented star ratings or fake testimonials here. The Product Hunt page, GitHub README, Microsoft Store listing, and the in-app changelog are the sources.

Microsoft used the same two words for a sidebar in Edge. That Drop sent notes and files to yourself via OneDrive. Edge 152 (Stable 152.0.4191.53, 27 August 2026) retired it. Files stay in OneDrive; text notes needed a download. What happened in 2026 and is it a Microsoft app? exist because search still mixes them.

What is edgedrop.app, in product terms

On Product Hunt the tagline is clipboard on the screen edge: hover to open, drag to drop. Maker: Deepender Yadav. License: Apache-2.0. Windows only. GitHub or Microsoft Store (9P3JMHN9M4NR). No account. No cloud clipboard. No telemetry of copies. History stays on the PC.

After install, a click-through strip sits on the left or right edge of a chosen monitor. Move the cursor into the hot zone (short dwell) and the shelf opens. Move away and it closes. Default hotkey Alt+C, configurable in current versions.

It captures:

• Images (including Snipping Tool captures in current builds)
• Files (including multi-file copies grouped into stacks, documented max 10)

You can pin, search, and filter (All / Text / Links / Images / Files). You can merge and split stacks. You can click to paste without the window stealing focus, or drag out with real OLE file handles into Explorer, Word, Slack, Photoshop, and other drop targets.

It does not:

• Capture the screen (that is Snipping Tool or ShareX)
• Expand typed abbreviations (that is Espanso / PhraseExpress)
• Sync clips to a phone
• Require a Microsoft account
• Live inside the Edge browser

A normal hour on the shelf

You copy a paragraph, a screenshot, a PDF from Explorer, and two links. Win+V may keep the text and a small bitmap. It will not keep the PDF as a reusable card. Official Win+V rules: 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart, optional text sync.

The shelf shows four (or five) cards. Filter Files when the list is noisy. Pin the PDF. Merge the two screenshots into a stack if you will drop them together. Hover the edge over the chat upload and drag. That is the product.

It is local. Reboot does not wipe it unless you turned on clear-unpinned-on-restart. That is the opposite of Win+V’s default and a reason some people *shouldn’t* install it on a shared family PC without auto-delete. Is Edge Drop safe?.

Who it is for: people who already drag between windows. Design, support tickets, slide decks, “I copied three things and need all of them.”

Who it is not for: people who wanted Microsoft’s phone pane; people who only overwrite one password field a day (don’t copy passwords); people who need CopyQ scripts or Ditto’s tiny search box; people on Mac/Linux.

How it compares to Win+V without a war

Windows already has clipboard history. Enable it with Win+V. Stay on Win+V if you reuse a handful of text snippets in one sitting and paste files immediately in Explorer.

Look at a shelf if you stage screenshots and files for later drag into desktop apps. That is a mouse-first job. What it is not (search traps)

The GitHub one-liner compares the UX to a Dynamic Island for the desktop clipboard. That is a metaphor. The app is a side-edge shelf, not a notch overlay, not a media dock. If you actually wanted a top island with media and widgets, read the pattern map before installing a clipboard specialist.

Install path is two buttons, not a wizard: GitHub NSIS (in-app auto-update) or Store MSIX (Store updates, packaged sandbox). First launch: pick a monitor edge, hover, copy something, confirm a card. If nothing opens, the hot zone is on the other monitor or fullscreen protection is hiding it in a game.

What you should copy on first launch: a paragraph, a URL, a Snipping Tool bitmap under 4 MB, and five files in Explorer. Win+V will keep the text and maybe the bitmap. It will not keep the files as cards. The shelf should show all of those types. If it does not, you are on the wrong product or an old build — check the version string against the changelog.

When Edge Drop fits / does not

The shelf fits when you stage text, links, images, and files on one Windows PC and you want hover plus OLE drag-out without an account.

Do not use Edge Drop if:

• You needed Microsoft’s retired OneDrive Drop on a phone.
• You only needed Win+V’s 25-item session list.
• You needed Ditto search, CopyQ scripts, ShareX capture, or autotext.
• You are on Mac or Linux.
• You cannot accept ~130–160 MB Electron RAM.
• You will copy passwords into history on a shared PC without incognito or auto-delete.

FAQ

Is edgedrop.app free? Yes. Apache-2.0. Optional Ko-fi / UPI support on the site. No paywall for the shelf.

Does it work on Mac or Linux? No. Windows 10/11 only.

Is it the Product Hunt “Drop” from Microsoft? No. Product Hunt lists the independent Windows shelf. Microsoft’s feature was in Edge and is gone as of version 152.

Does it replace Win+V? Only for mouse-first staging of files and images. Keep Win+V if you want a 25-item OS flyout with a reboot wipe for unpinned items.
