Is Edge Drop a Microsoft app? No — not the product at edgedrop.app. That Windows clipboard shelf is independent open source by Deepender Yadav, licensed Apache-2.0, GitHub Deepender25/Edge-Drop. A Microsoft Store listing is not Microsoft authorship.

Microsoft shipped a browser feature named Drop. It lived in the Edge sidebar or a toolbar pin, required a Microsoft account, and stored shared files in OneDrive. Edge 152 (Stable 152.0.4191.53, 27 August 2026) retired it. Microsoft’s notes: “Drop is retired. We’re simplifying Microsoft Edge.”

The Store hosts third-party developers. Read the publisher line. If the publisher is Microsoft Corporation and the UI is inside Edge, that feature is gone. If the publisher is Deepender Yadav and the UI is a desktop hover shelf (or Alt+C), Edge 152 did not touch it.

Is Edge Drop a Microsoft app? Publisher checks

Run this before any “Edge Drop” installer. Clipboard tools read everything you copy. Publisher identity is the first control.

1. Store — apps.microsoft.com listing 9P3JMHN9M4NR. Publisher is not Microsoft Corporation.
2. GitHub — github.com/Deepender25/Edge-Drop. Apache-2.0 LICENSE. Releases come from that repo.
3. Website — https://www.edgedrop.app, not microsoft.com/edge.
4. Where it runs — desktop edge of a monitor, hover or Alt+C. Not an Edge sidebar.
5. Account — the shelf does not ask you to sign in. Microsoft Drop required a Microsoft account.

If a download page uses the words Edge Drop but the publisher is unknown, a fork, or “Pro” with no source, treat it as a different binary.

Edge Drop Microsoft Store vs browser

Edge Drop the shelf captures text, links, images, and files locally, stacks them, and drag-outs with OLE handles. It does not sign you into Edge. It does not replace phone-to-PC Drop. Win+V remains the OS history: 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart.

Microsoft signing a Store package means Microsoft delivered a third-party MSIX. It does not mean Microsoft wrote the clipboard code, supports it as an Edge feature, or replaced Drop with it.

How the mix-up happens

Search, Product Hunt, and some press used “Edge Drop” for the shelf because the GitHub tagline compares it to a Dynamic Island for the desktop clipboard. Microsoft’s feature used the same two words years earlier. Windows Central flagged the name clash when covering the Windows utility. After Edge 152, “is Edge Drop a Microsoft app” spiked because people opened the browser and the pane was missing.

What the desktop app actually is

The Store/GitHub product is a clipboard shelf, not a browser extension. Hover the chosen monitor edge (or Alt+C). Cards for text, links, images, and files can be stacked, pinned, searched, filtered, and dragged out with OLE file handles into Explorer, Word, Slack, or Photoshop. No Microsoft account. No OneDrive. Apache-2.0. Project notes put operational RAM roughly in the 130–160 MB range (Electron). Current public notes include 0.3.1 (8 September 2026): emoji picker on the filter bar, UI refresh, full URLs on link cards, duplicate-capture fixes, autostart hardening, 31 languages + RTL.

That feature set does not restore phone-to-PC Drop. It also does not make Microsoft responsible for the binary. If a helpdesk asks “is this a Microsoft app?”, the accurate answer is: Microsoft published a Store package for a third-party developer; Microsoft did not write the clipboard shelf, and Microsoft’s own Drop pane is retired.

Forks and lookalikes

Clipboard managers are high-value malware targets because they see passwords, tokens, and screenshots. Verification is boring on purpose:

• Match the GitHub org Deepender25 and the Store product id 9P3JMHN9M4NR.
• Prefer Store or GitHub Releases over random “edgedrop-setup.exe” mirrors.
• If SmartScreen flags an unsigned GitHub build, that is a channel fact, not proof of malice — and not a reason to grab a renamed zip from a blog.
• Read the Apache-2.0 LICENSE in the repo. Closed “Edge Drop Pro” forks are a different binary.

A Store listing can still be a clone if the publisher line is wrong. Always read it. Microsoft’s catalog is large; Microsoft does not personally author every package.

Work and school PCs add a second confusion. Helpdesk may see “Edge Drop” on a Store receipt and assume it is an Edge policy or a Microsoft-supported pane. It is not. Group Policy for Edge does not install or remove the desktop shelf. AppLocker / Store allow-lists might permit listing 9P3JMHN9M4NR while still blocking GitHub .exe files. That is a packaging fact, not proof Microsoft authored the clipboard.

If IT only allows first-party Microsoft software, do not argue that a Store listing makes the shelf first-party. Say it is third-party Apache-2.0, local, no account, and that Microsoft’s own Drop pane is already retired. Then follow the written policy.

A five-minute identity check:

1. Open the Store listing or GitHub Releases from a bookmark, not a random search ad.
2. Confirm publisher / org and the Apache-2.0 LICENSE file.
3. Install once. Confirm hover or Alt+C opens a desktop shelf, not an Edge sidebar.
4. Confirm the app never asks for a Microsoft account to use clipboard cards.
5. If any of those fail, uninstall. You have the wrong binary.

Win+V is still Microsoft’s clipboard history: 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart. It is an OS feature, not Drop, and not the Store shelf.

When Edge Drop fits / does not

The shelf fits when you want a local Windows hover clipboard, you verified the publisher, and you are not expecting Microsoft support or a OneDrive thread.

Do not use Edge Drop if:

• You thought Microsoft wrote it and you only install first-party software. It is third-party, even on the Store.
• You needed the retired Edge pane on a phone.
• You cannot identify Deepender25 / 9P3JMHN9M4NR on the installer you found.
• IT policy forbids third-party clipboard monitors.
• You wanted Win+V only (25 items, reboot wipe) and no extra process.

FAQ

Does Microsoft own edgedrop.app? No. Deepender Yadav publishes the Apache-2.0 shelf. Microsoft does not own the site, the GitHub org, or the clipboard code.

Why is it on the Microsoft Store? Third-party packaging. Microsoft signs Store packages for delivery. That is not Microsoft authorship and not a replacement for the retired browser Drop.

Should I stop using Edge? No. Drop’s retirement is one pane, not a reason to switch browsers by itself. The desktop shelf does not depend on which browser you use.

If it is on the Store, is it still safe to treat as Microsoft-backed? Treat it as a third-party app with Store delivery. Use the safety checklist. Store hosting is not a pentest and not a Microsoft support contract for the shelf.
