End-of-Project Clipboard Wipe: A Checklist for Client Work

When a project ships, wipe its client material from your clipboard on the same day. Unpin and delete any client items in Win+V, select Clear all, then clear clipboard data in Settings so synced copies go too. Empty any other clipboard app and your staging folders, rotate any secret that was copied, and note the wipe in your project close-out. Waiting for the next restart isn't enough, because pinned items and third-party clipboard apps survive it.

The checklist

1. Clear Win+V, including pins

1. Press Windows logo key + V.
2. Unpin every project item: client meeting links, staging URLs, logos, colour values, draft copy. Select the pin icon on each, or use See more (...) to find Unpin or Delete.
3. Delete anything sensitive outright with See more (...) > Delete.
4. Select Clear all at the top of the panel.

2. Clear clipboard data in Settings

Go to Settings > System > Clipboard and select Clear next to Clear clipboard data. Microsoft says this clears everything on the device and in the cloud, except pinned items.

3. Replace the current clipboard item

Copy a harmless word. The last thing you copied stays on the clipboard until something replaces it, even after history is cleared. Clipboard history vs the single live clipboard explains the difference.

4. Clear other clipboard apps

Windows' clear options only affect Win+V. Open every clipboard manager you used on the project and clear its history, pinned items and favourites. If an app synced to the vendor's cloud, remove the data there too. Clipboard manager privacy settings: a checklist lists what to look for.

5. Clean up staging folders

• Move final files you need to keep into the project archive.
• Delete working copies on the Desktop and in Downloads.
• Delete client screenshots saved in Pictures or your screenshots folder.
• Empty the Recycle Bin only after confirming the archive has everything.

6. Rotate any secret that was copied

If a password, token or API key was copied during the project, revoke or change it. Removing it from clipboard history doesn't undo the exposure, especially if sync was on or it was pasted into chat.

7. Check chat and email

Search your chat apps and drafts for client screenshots and pasted data that were never filed. Move anything that's needed into the ticket or archive, then delete the rest according to your organisation's retention rules.

8. Record the wipe

Add one line to the project close-out, for example: "Clipboard history, pins, clipboard app history and staging folders cleared on 14 October. Secrets rotated: none were copied. Machines: office laptop, home desktop." Without it, nobody will remember whether the wipe happened when someone asks later.

What not to delete

• The official project archive, repository or asset library.
• Records your organisation must keep for finance or legal reasons.
• Anything under a legal hold. Ask your legal or IT team first.

If the only copy of a deliverable is a pinned clipboard item, save it to the archive before you start.

Contractors and returned laptops

If a laptop leaves with the contractor or goes back to IT on the day the project ends, run the checklist before it goes. A restart doesn't remove pins or clipboard app history, and reimaging a PC doesn't rotate a secret that was copied on it. If you used Edge Drop

Edge Drop keeps its own history in %APPDATA%\Edge-Drop\, separate from Win+V. Clear all history in its clear menu (tap again to confirm) removes unpinned items but never pinned ones, so unpin or delete project cards first. Clearing an item also clears the system clipboard if it still holds that content. Only the history index is encrypted; captured images and long text are stored as ordinary files in the same folder. Is restarting the PC enough to wipe clipboard history?

No. A restart clears unpinned Win+V items only. Pinned items, synced copies on other devices and other clipboard apps survive it.

Does Clear clipboard data remove pinned items?

How long does the checklist take?

Usually ten to fifteen minutes for one PC, longer if you have several machines or a lot of staging files to sort.
