Clipboard Managers Without Cloud Sync: Why It's a Feature

A clipboard manager without cloud sync keeps your history on the PC where you copied it, and nowhere else. There's no account to create, no copy on a provider's servers, and nothing about what you copy leaves the machine. Ditto and Edge Drop work this way on Windows, as does Windows clipboard history (Win+V) as long as its sync setting stays off. The trade-off is that your clips don't follow you to other devices, which for many people is the point.

Why no sync is a feature

A clipboard manager records almost everything you copy: links, messages, addresses, code, and sometimes passwords or one-time codes. Where that record lives matters.

With local-only history:

• Your clips exist in one place. They stay on one PC, under your Windows account, instead of also sitting on a server and on every synced device.
• There's no account. Nothing to sign up for, no password to protect, and no lockout if an account has a problem.
• No third-party retention rules apply. You decide how long clips are kept, using the app's own clear and auto-delete options.
• It works offline. Nothing depends on a service being up.

With sync, the same history also lives with the sync provider and on each device you connect. That can be well protected, but it's more places to think about. What end-to-end encrypted clipboard sync would require covers what to look for when an app does sync.

What you give up without sync

• Cross-device history. A link copied on your laptop isn't on your desktop.
• A backup. If the PC dies, its clipboard history goes with it. For things that matter, keep them somewhere meant for storage, such as a notes app or a file, not only in clipboard history.
• Phone-to-PC copying, unless you add a separate tool for it.

If none of those matter day to day, a local-only manager is the simpler and more private choice.

How to move a clip between devices when you need to

You can keep a local clipboard manager and still send something across occasionally:

• Windows to Windows: Windows clipboard history can sync text between PCs signed in to the same Microsoft account or work account. Turn on Clipboard history across your devices in Settings > System > Clipboard, and on Windows 11 choose Manually sync text that I copy if you only want to share some items. • Android to Windows: Microsoft SwiftKey's Cloud Clipboard sends your last copied clip to a Windows PC with clipboard sync on, using a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft says the clip is available for one hour. Phone Link's clipboard settings are another route on supported phones.
• Files and larger items: use a shared folder, OneDrive, or a local transfer tool. Sharing your clipboard between two Windows PCs compares the options.

Each of these is opt-in and limited to what you choose to send, which is a different risk from syncing your entire history.

Don't sync a clipboard app's data folder yourself

Pointing OneDrive, Syncthing or another file-sync tool at a clipboard manager's data folder doesn't give you working cross-device history, and it can damage the history you have.

• Encrypted history won't open elsewhere. Edge Drop encrypts its history index with Windows DPAPI. Microsoft's documentation says DPAPI data can typically only be decrypted by the same user, on the computer where it was encrypted (roaming profiles are an exception). A copy on another PC can't be read.
• Two writers, one file. Clipboard managers write to their history files constantly. Syncing those files while two PCs run the app at once can leave conflicting or broken copies.

If you need history on two machines, use a tool built to sync, and check how it protects the data.

Questions to ask a clipboard manager that does sync

• Is sync off until you turn it on?
• Is it end-to-end encrypted, so the provider can't read your clips?
• Can you sync only some items (pinned or chosen clips) rather than everything?
• Does it skip content that password managers mark as private? Windows defines clipboard formats apps use to keep content out of history and cloud sync; what sensitive formats monitors should ignore lists them.
• What happens to synced data when you delete it locally or close your account?

Where Edge Drop fits

Edge Drop has no sync and no account. History is stored in %APPDATA%\Edge-Drop on your PC, with the history index encrypted using Windows DPAPI (saved images and long text clips are stored as ordinary files). The app's only automatic network use is the update check in the GitHub build, which you can turn off. The project's README lists opt-in, end-to-end encrypted sync of pinned items as a planned roadmap item; it hasn't shipped. Where Edge Drop stores data on disk lists every file.

FAQ

Does Windows clipboard history sync by default?

No. Clipboard history itself is off until you turn it on, and syncing across devices is a separate setting, Clipboard history across your devices, that you have to switch on as well.

Is a clipboard manager without sync more secure?

It has fewer places where your clips exist, which reduces exposure. It doesn't protect against malware on the PC itself, so clearing sensitive items and using a password manager's own autofill still matter.

Can I back up a local clipboard manager's history?

Check the app. Edge Drop has no export feature, and its encrypted index can't be read on another PC. For anything you need to keep, save it to a file or notes app instead.
