How Long Does Windows Keep a Copied Password?

Windows has no timer for passwords. A copied password stays on the clipboard until you copy something else, your password manager clears it, or you shut down the PC. If Clipboard history (Win+V) is on, a copy can also sit in that list until 25 newer items push it out or the PC restarts, unless the password manager marked the copy to be left out of history, which several do.

Where a copied password can live

A copy can end up in up to three places, each with its own lifetime:

A pinned item survives restarts and stays until someone deletes it. Never pin a password.

Does your password manager keep copies out of Win+V?

Apps can tag what they put on the clipboard with special formats that Windows honours. One tells Windows to keep the item out of clipboard history and cloud sync; others control history or sync separately. Password managers that use them never show up in Win+V, even with history on.

What the major managers document:

Copies made from a browser extension are written to the clipboard by the browser, so they may not carry the same tags as copies from the desktop app.

The auto-clear timer only empties the current clipboard. If a copy did reach Win+V, the timer doesn't remove it from history.

Check your own setup in 30 seconds

1. Turn on clipboard history if it isn't already (Win+V > Turn on).
2. Copy a password from your manager the way you normally do.
3. Press Win+V.

If the password isn't in the list, your manager is opting out. If it is there, delete it (See more (...) > Delete) and either change how you copy passwords or turn history off, as described below.

Should you turn on clipboard history if you mostly copy passwords?

If most of what you copy is passwords, one-time codes and recovery keys, and your password manager doesn't opt out, leave history off. History adds a second copy of each secret, an optional cloud copy and a pin button that keeps items across restarts, and the only benefit is re-pasting things you could get again from the vault.

A safer default for a password-heavy PC:

1. Use your password manager's autofill instead of copy and paste wherever it works.
2. Turn on its clipboard auto-clear.
3. Leave Clipboard history off, or keep it on only if the check above shows your manager stays out of it. How to turn clipboard history off completely has the steps.

5. Lock the PC with Win+L when you step away.

If you copy a mix of passwords and everyday text and want history for the rest, either confirm your manager opts out or use a clipboard manager with rules to ignore copies from chosen apps. Who can see a password in clipboard history

• Anyone using your unlocked Windows session. Pressing Win+V shows the list.

Private or incognito browsing doesn't change any of this; copying in a private window uses the same Windows clipboard.

How to clear a copied password now

1. Press Win+V and select Clear all. This removes everything except pinned items, on this device and in the cloud.
2. Check for any pinned item that shouldn't be there, and delete it with See more (...) > Delete.
3. Copy something harmless, such as a single word, so Ctrl+V no longer pastes the password.

Clipboard managers keep copies longer

A third-party clipboard manager usually keeps hundreds of items and saves them to disk, so a password it records can survive for days. Most good managers skip items that password managers tag. Does restarting the PC clear a copied password?

Yes for unpinned history items, which Windows clears on restart. The current clipboard is also emptied when you shut down.

Does locking the screen clear the clipboard?

No. Locking hides your session, but the clipboard and history are still there when you unlock.

Is Windows 10 different?

Clipboard history works the same way on Windows 10. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so it no longer gets security updates.
