New 2026 clipboard apps vs Edge Drop should be a positioning exercise, not a fake scorecard. Store pages and “best of” lists reuse the same words — shelf, hero, vault, AI — for tools that do different jobs. One app is a Tauri history with optional cloud AI. Another is a Linux/Wayland pipe. A third is a taskbar strip of five clips. Edge Drop is a free Apache-2.0 hover shelf with OLE drag-out on Windows 10/11. Those are not one product with different skins.

This piece does not award points out of ten. It lists criteria, then places each name only as far as public docs support. Publisher identity beats adjectives in the title.

Microsoft’s browser Edge Drop was retired in Edge 152 (27 August 2026). It is not this shelf and it is not Beetroot.

Use this list before a download. If a landing page cannot answer a row, treat the app as unvetted.

Numbered workflow: read a 2026 landing page without a scorecard

1. Publisher and repo, not the adjective in the title. Store publisher, GitHub org, and package ID. Lookalike clipboard installers are the actual disaster.
2. Where history lives. SQLite path on disk, DPAPI, “our cloud,” or a marketing fog. Local SQLite is still local until Transform calls an API.
3. What happens on Transform/OCR if a key is set. BYOK means you brought a key to a provider. A local model with no key is a different claim. Read the current privacy page, not a screenshot from a roundup.
4. File cards versus bitmap-only. Copy five files in Explorer. If the UI shows nothing, it is not a file shelf. Win+V will also show nothing; that is documented.
5. Drag test. Drop a PNG from the UI onto an Explorer window. If you get a .url or nothing, it is not OLE. Fake HTML5 drag often dies in Explorer. See clipboard managers that actually let you drag files and images out.
6. One watcher. Do not run Beetroot, Ditto, and a shelf together “to compare in production.” Pick a primary. Pair ShareX (capture) or Espanso (expanders) with a shelf; those are different jobs.
7. Skip numbered “best clipboard 2026” grids that list ten apps with identical 9.5 scores. Position the job, then install one watcher.

When Edge Drop fits / does not

Fits. You are mouse-first. You stage files and images into desktop apps. You want hover or Alt+C, pins, filters, stacks, and OLE drag-out. You want Apache-2.0, no account, no AI rewriter. Windows 10/11 only.

Does not. You need scripting (CopyQ). You need a tiny native tray (Ditto/ArsClip). You need a phone hop (Flitdrop/LocalSend). You need OCR and optional rewrite (Beetroot, or ShareX for capture OCR). You are on Hyprland (Rolv’s Clipvault / cliphist). You only paste short text in one sitting (Win+V).

If the job is a local hover shelf with real drag-out, edgedrop.app is the Apache-2.0 Windows build. If the job is AI transforms or Wayland pipes, Beetroot or Clipvault (Rolv) are in those lanes — verify the publisher first.

Beetroot: real Windows app — hedge the AI layer

Beetroot (Max Nardit; GitHub mnardit/beetroot-releases) is a Windows clipboard manager built with Tauri v2, Rust, React, SQLite. Public claims: local history, fuzzy/regex search, native Windows OCR, optional AI transforms with BYOK or a local model. Apache-2.0 source was announced around the 1.6.x line; keys in Credential Manager. The vendor site says that with auto-update off and no API key, it makes zero network requests. That is not the same as “AI is local.” Attach OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, or DeepSeek and those transforms leave the machine.

Best when: you want searchable history, OCR, and optional rewrite, and you will keep BYOK off for secrets.

Worse when: you needed a hover edge with file stacks you drag into Slack or Premiere. Beetroot is a history/transform app. Confirm drag-out yourself before you assume OLE; this article does not invent a drag demo that was not verified here.

Hedge: idle RAM and “unlimited history” are vendor figures. Measure on your PC. Treat Transform as an explicit send.

ClipVault / ClipinVault: the name collision

Do not buy or install “ClipVault” from a search ad without the publisher.

• clipinvault.com — ClipinVault, Windows and Ubuntu builds, local history, advertised AES for secrets, WebView2 on Windows, X11 on Linux (Wayland via XWayland). Desktop history product.
• Rolv-Apneseth/clipvault — Clipvault, clipboard history for Wayland, inspired by cliphist, no built-in picker (pipe to rofi/wofi/dmenu), AGPL. Hyprland wiki documents wl-paste --watch clipvault store. This is not a Windows hover shelf.
• Other GitHub ClipVault repos exist (PyQt Win+V clone for Ubuntu, egui Linux tray). Different licenses, different OS.

Best when: you already know which binary you mean.

Worse when: you assumed the Wayland CLI would give you Alt+C on Windows 11.

Edge Drop does not run on Linux. If you are on Hyprland, Clipvault (Rolv) or cliphist is the category; edgedrop.app is not a port.

“Clipboard Hero” and “Shelf”: hedge unverified listings

Clipboard Hero. A public ClipboardHero repo (dannyeldridge/clipboard-hero) is a macOS Swift menu-bar history. That does not prove a Windows Store app of the same marketing name is the same code, or that it exists as advertised in a roundup. Until you have a publisher, a license file, and a hash from a repo you trust, treat “Clipboard Hero for Windows” as unverified. Do not paste a mystery installer because a listicle used the word Hero.

Shelf. Several products use the word:

• ClipShelf (clipshelf.app, Simon Knuth) — Windows 10/11 taskbar strip of recent clips, numbered Win+Ctrl shortcuts, native WinUI. That is a visible bar, not an edge hover. Test drag yourself before you assume OLE.
• Notch / island “shelves” (Notchify and similar) may advertise a clipboard or file shelf. Press claiming drag-out is a reason not to write “only Edge Drop can drag.” Fake HTML5 drag often dies in Explorer.
• Edge Drop calls its UI a shelf because cards sit on the monitor edge. Same English word, different chrome.

Edge Drop is the product on this site: hover or Alt+C, local history, pins, filters, stacks, OLE drag-out, Windows 10/11, Apache-2.0. Not Microsoft’s retired browser Drop. Not a cloud clipboard. Not an AI rewriter. Electron RAM is the honest tax versus Beetroot/Ditto.

Can you run both? History + shelf watchers often fight. Pair ShareX or Espanso with a shelf; do not run two clipboard watchers. Tray vs shelf: Edge-Drop vs Ditto. Project notes put Edge Drop in the roughly 130–160 MB class. Measure on your machine.

Which ClipVault should Windows users install? None by name alone. ClipinVault is a desktop product; Rolv’s Clipvault is Wayland. Confirm the domain and git remote before you download anything.

Did Microsoft ship “Clipboard Hero” in 2026? No. Win+V is still the built-in history (25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap). Unverified third-party names are not OS features.
