After Microsoft Killed Edge Drop: Cross-Device Tools vs On-PC Clipboard Shelf

After Microsoft killed Edge Drop, the next install depends on intent, not on the two words “Edge Drop.” Microsoft retired the browser pane in Edge 152 (Stable 152.0.4191.53, 27 August 2026): “Drop is retired. We’re simplifying Microsoft Edge.” That feature sent notes, photos, and files across devices signed into a Microsoft account, with files in OneDrive. It is gone from the sidebar.

edgedrop.app is a different product: a local Windows clipboard shelf (hover / Alt+C, OLE drag-out, Apache-2.0, no cloud, Store 9P3JMHN9M4NR, GitHub Deepender25/Edge-Drop). Edge 152 did not remove it. If you opened Edge looking for the Drop icon, you lost a share pane. If you wanted cards on a monitor edge you can drag into Photoshop, you were never on Microsoft’s feature.

After Microsoft killed Edge Drop: pick the job, then the tool

A — Cross-device. Did Drop live *inside Edge*? Did a phone or second PC see the same thread? Did files land in OneDrive? You lost a share pane. You need a pipe.

B — On this PC. Did a strip on the screen edge open with cards you drag into Photoshop, Slack, or Explorer? You want a clipboard shelf. Microsoft never shipped that.

If you are not sure, you almost certainly used A. That is the feature people noticed missing after the August 2026 update.

Win+V is still 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap. Unpinned wipe on restart. Optional Microsoft text sync is a separate toggle. It never was Drop.

Path A — replace the retired Microsoft pane

None of these is a pixel clone. Honest stand-ins:

1. LocalSend — same Wi-Fi, no account. First try when both devices are on the LAN and you refuse another login.
2. Windows Nearby Share / Android Quick Share — short range, OS identity.
3. Phone Link — already-paired phones, photos, some clipboard. Uses a Microsoft account you may already have.
4. OneDrive or email-to-self — durable cloud. Files Microsoft already stored via Drop: look in OneDrive.
5. Self-hosted Drop-shaped apps (Cliff Drop, Flitdrop, QRDrop) if you want a server. Those are sharing, not a Photoshop drag shelf. Cliff Drop, QRDrop, Flitdrop vs Edge Drop.

Text notes needed a download before 152. Rolling back Edge is not a plan. A clipboard overlay cannot appear on iOS Edge. Do not install a Windows shelf expecting the phone thread to return.

Path B — on-PC clipboard shelf

Stay on Win+V when 25 text/HTML/bitmap items and 4 MB are enough. Files in Explorer are a one-shot paste, not a library.

Pick Edge Drop when you stage mixed cards and drag them. No Microsoft account. Confirm the publisher is not Microsoft: is Edge Drop a Microsoft app?.

Pick Ditto or CopyQ when you want tray search or scripts, not a blade. Hover shelf or tray history.

Do not run two historians.

Spelling collisions: EdgeDrop, Edge-Drop, or Edge Drop?.

When Edge Drop fits — and when it does not

Fits (Path B) when the pain is staging text, links, images, and files on this Windows PC, hovering an edge or pressing Alt+C, and OLE-dragging into desktop apps. Local. Apache-2.0.

Does not fit (Path A) when you wanted the phone thread, the OneDrive Drop folder, or a sidebar pin in Edge. edgedrop.app does not restore Microsoft Drop. It does not sync to iOS Edge. It does not replace LocalSend. Pair tools if you need both jobs: LocalSend or Phone Link for the hop; a shelf for the hour of staging on Windows. That is the stack. Not “Drop 2.0.”

Cross-device needs a network: cloud, LAN, or a server you run. A local-only shelf that never phones home cannot show a card on your phone. A OneDrive thread cannot give Premiere a native file drag from a hover strip.

Pairing, not cloning

People who used Microsoft Drop for “send this screenshot to my laptop, then drop it into a deck” actually had two steps. After 152:

• Hop: LocalSend / Nearby Share / Phone Link / OneDrive.
• Stage: Win+V if the screenshot is a small bitmap; a shelf if you also have a PDF and a URL.

Installing only the shelf skips the hop. Installing only LocalSend skips the staging hour. Installing both as two clipboard watchers is the wrong pairing — LocalSend is not a clipboard manager.

Safety of the Store shelf is a publisher question: is Edge Drop safe?. Random “EdgeDrop Pro” EXEs with no LICENSE are not a path.

Dated context (do not skip; details in 510)

• June 2026: Canary banner — Drop retiring; OneDrive keeps files; download text notes.
• July 2026 (Edge 151 notes): “in the near future.”
• 27 August 2026: Edge 152.0.4191.53 Stable — Drop is retired.
• September 2026: Edge 153 does not bring it back.

What not to install in the week after 152

• Random “EdgeDrop Pro” EXEs with no publisher and no LICENSE.
• A cloud clipboard sold as Drop if your pain was *not* leaving this PC.
• A second clipboard watcher alongside Ditto because the name matched a sidebar you lost.
• An Edge rollback to 151 as a long-term plan.

People who used Drop only for “email this PDF to myself” already have email-to-self and OneDrive. They do not need a hover blade. People who used Drop as a parking lot for screenshots *on one PC* were using the wrong Microsoft feature for a clipboard job; Win+V or a shelf was always the honest tool.

A ten-minute test that ends the argument

1. Write down the last time Drop (or “Edge Drop”) failed you. Device hop, or clipboard overwrite?
2. If device hop: send a 2 MB photo with LocalSend. If that is the job, stop shopping clipboard apps.
3. If overwrite/staging: enable Win+V. Copy a paragraph, a screenshot, and five files in Explorer. Note what the panel actually shows.
4. If files and drag-out are the gap, install the shelf from edgedrop.app. Repeat the same copies. Drag the files into a folder.
5. Keep the tool that passed the written job. Uninstall the rest.

“A nicer Drop” is not a job.

FAQ

Did Microsoft replace Drop with the Store clipboard shelf? No. Different publisher, different job. Edge 152 retired the pane. It did not ship edgedrop.app.

Is edgedrop.app what I should use after Edge 152? Only if you wanted on-PC staging. If you wanted phone ↔ PC, no.

Are my old Drop files deleted? Microsoft said files remain in OneDrive. Text notes were a separate download before the pane vanished. Check OneDrive first.

Can one app honestly do both jobs? Not without a network pipe. Local-only staging cannot appear on a phone. A share pane cannot OLE-drag into Premiere. Pair them.
