How to Build a Sticker and Icon Kit From Copied Images

How to Build a Sticker and Icon Kit From Copied Images — Edge Drop Guide

Streamers, community managers, and product designers all end up with a junk drawer of emotes, badges, and UI icons. The drawer starts as a desktop folder, then becomes twenty tabs of "copy image," then a Win+V list of unlabelled bitmaps that vanish at reboot. A personal kit is smaller and meaner: named files, a short stage for this session, and a real library when the same graphic is reused in Figma or OBS every week.

Windows will not be that library. Microsoft's history is 25 items, 4 MB each, text / HTML / bitmap, unpinned items cleared on restart. Files are not first-class cards. An animated GIF copied from a browser often lands as a static frame — Figma's own paste help warns that most browsers do not put animated GIFs on the clipboard.

Decide what "kit" means

Three different objects get called a sticker pack:

  1. Chat stickers and emotes — small PNG or GIF files uploaded to Discord, Slack, Twitch
  2. Stream overlays — PNG with alpha, sometimes WebM, dropped into OBS
  3. Product icons — SVG or component instances in Figma

Mixing them in one Win+V list is how a 16-pixel favicon and a 1080p overlay fight for the same 25 slots. Keep three folders even if the art style matches:

kit/
  chat/
  overlay/
  ui/

OBS and Stream Overlays: Clipboard Is a Weak Source is the overlay-specific warning. Game UI Artists: HUD Icons on a Pull-Tab is the game-UI version. When Figma Components Replace Copied Assets is the product-design graduation.

Build the files first

Rules that prevent a second rebuild:

  • One subject per file. wave.png, not sheet-all-emotes.png, unless the sheet is the deliverable for a platform that wants an atlas
  • Transparent PNG for stills that sit on unknown backgrounds. Confirm alpha in a checkerboard viewer
  • SVG for UI icons that must scale. Rasterize only at export time
  • Animated GIF or APNG/WebM as files. Do not copy from a web page and expect animation to survive
  • sRGB, reasonable pixel size. A 4000-pixel emote is a download tax and a 4 MB history miss
  • Names that sort. status-live.png, status-brb.png, status-end.png

Export from the source app with its official exporter. Photoshop: Export As / Quick Export. Figma: Export panel, 1× and 2× if the icon is UI; Figma documents 2× = 144 DPI from a 72 DPI base. Figma Copy as PNG defaults to 2× — fine for a one-off paste, wrong as the only master. Exporting @1x and @2x Without Losing the Pair.

Canva users: upload sources into Canva if that is the editor, then download the export. Do not recapture the editor tab. Canva Desktop vs Canva Web Clipboard Limits.

The session shelf versus the kit

The kit is the folder (or a Figma page, or an Eagle collection). The shelf is the five graphics needed in the next hour.

A reasonable Win+V load:

  • Two chat emotes that will be pasted into a community announcement
  • One hex string for the outline color
  • One 1× PNG of a status badge under 4 MB

Pin those four if the machine might reboot during the stream setup. Unpin after. Pins survive restart; they still have no search and no folders. Pinned Win+V Items Are Not a Real Library.

When the next action is drop into OBS or Explorer, copy the files, not the pixels. Copying Files vs Copying File Contents. History will not show those files as reusable cards. That is expected. Why Win+V Will Not Show the File You Just Copied.

Figma: components beat copied stickers

Figma help: components are reusable elements; instances stay linked to a main component; team libraries share them across files. Anyone with can-edit can create components (Ctrl+Alt+K on Windows). Variants group related states (default / hover / live / offline).

If the "sticker" is a product icon, promote it:

  1. Draw or place the icon once
  2. Create component
  3. Add variants for color and state instead of exporting ten PNGs into Win+V
  4. Publish the library when another file needs it

Pasting a PNG of the icon into every new file is how the outline weight drifts. Guide to components in Figma is the official write-up. Desktop versus browser paste still matters when bringing *raster* stickers in: Figma Desktop vs Figma Web: Paste Behavior Differs. Figma resizes assets over 4096 px.

OBS, Discord, Slack

OBS. Add Source > Image (or Image Slide Show) pointing at the file path. A clipboard bitmap is a weak source because the next scene collection on another PC cannot find it. Keep overlays in the same folder as the scene collection backup.

Discord / Slack. Upload the file. Slack's help notes that inline previews have pixel-dimension thresholds; the original file is the thing to keep. Do not harvest the inline preview as the new master. Avoiding Compressed Chat Images in Final Decks.

Teams. Same file rule. Chat is distribution, not storage.

A one-hour kit build

  1. Dump every random PNG from the desktop into _inbox
  2. Delete duplicates and anything with a watermark or someone else's IP
  3. Rename survivors
  4. Convert "good enough" JPEGs with white backgrounds into PNG cutouts only if the kit needs cutouts — otherwise leave photos in a different folder
  5. Export SVG from the vector source for UI
  6. Put finals in kit/chat, kit/overlay, kit/ui
  7. Add the five most used files to a shortcut folder or a pin list for this week
  8. Clear Win+V unpinned items so yesterday's client UI is not in the same list as emotes

Client Feedback: Collect Marked-Up Shots in One Place is the opposite pile — do not mix client mocks into the personal kit.

Licensing and taste

A personal kit is still subject to platform and font licenses. Twitch emote pixel sizes are a platform rule, not a clipboard rule. Do not copy a vendor icon from a website and treat Win+V as a license. Keep a LICENSE.txt next to third-party sets.

If the kit is for a brand, the official home is Brand Kit (Canva), Creative Cloud Libraries, or the brand folder — not 25 pinned bitmaps. Keeping Brand Assets Off the Desktop and On a Shelf.

When a DAM or a shelf is justified

Best Clipboard Setup for Photoshop Users applies if Photoshop is where the emotes are painted.

Worked example: a four-emote chat pack

  1. Draw 128×128 masters in the illustration app
  2. Export wave.png, lol.png, thanks.png, brb.png with alpha
  3. Upload those files to Discord/Slack as custom emotes (follow each platform's current pixel rules)
  4. Keep the same four files in kit/chat/
  5. For a stream layout, duplicate only the two that appear on camera into kit/overlay/ at the larger size the scene uses
  6. For a Figma community graphic, place the SVG or a component — do not paste a 32-pixel history thumbnail
  7. Pin thanks.png in Win+V only if it is under 4 MB and will be pasted into announcements all week
  8. Friday: unpin. The folder remains

What to refuse

  • Random "copy image" from a sticker marketplace without a license
  • A spritesheet as the only master when platforms want single files
  • Mixing NDA game HUD with personal emotes
  • Animated GIFs that exist only as a browser paste

Troubleshooting

SymptomFix
Overlay looks crunchy in OBSThe file is too small; export larger, Image source the file
Paste into Figma is staticDownload the GIF; import the file (official Figma note)
History missing an overlayOver 4 MB; use the folder
"Which wave is official?"Only kit/chat/wave.png is official; delete desktop copies

The kit is a folder with names. The shelf is this hour's five files. Windows history is a 25-slot, 4 MB, reboot-volatile list of bitmaps and text. Build in that order and the junk drawer stays empty.
