SVG or PNG: Which Survives the Clipboard?

SVG or PNG: Which Survives the Clipboard? — Edge Drop Guide

SVG is markup (and sometimes a file). PNG is pixels. The Windows clipboard can hold both at once — text or HTML for the markup, a bitmap for a preview — and the destination decides which flavor to paste. Windows clipboard history records text, HTML, and bitmap only. It does not have a special “keep this as live vectors forever” type.

That mismatch is why an icon copies as a crisp path in one app and a fuzzy rectangle in another.

What actually gets copied

Source actionTypical clipboard payloadWhat history can show
Win+Shift+SBitmap (and a PNG file if auto-save is on)Bitmap, if under 4 MB
Browser Copy image on a rasterBitmap, sometimes HTML with a URLBitmap and/or HTML
Browser Copy on inline SVGOften text/HTML of the SVG, sometimes a rasterizationText/HTML
Figma Copy as SVG / copy vectorSVG text (and other Figma-internal formats)The text, if published to the OS clipboard
Illustrator copy with Include SVG / SVG option enabledSVG code plus PDF/AICB depending on prefsText and maybe a bitmap preview
Explorer copy of icon.svgFile list (HDROP), not the SVG bytes as textUsually nothing useful in Win+V
Explorer copy of icon.pngFile listSame — not a bitmap card

Microsoft’s history rules: 25 items, 4 MB, text/HTML/bitmap, unpinned wipe on restart. A large PNG export misses history. A 2 KB SVG string fits easily.

Files copied in Explorer are not a first-class history type. Pasting in Explorer duplicates the file. Pasting in Notepad does nothing useful. Windows Clipboard History Does Not Store Files.

Destination behavior

Figma

Figma can paste SVG markup as vectors when the clipboard holds SVG text it understands. A bitmap paste becomes an image fill. Community threads periodically report Illustrator copies arriving as images when the vector path broke (clipboard prefs, security software, or a format Figma stopped reading). If vectors flatten:

  1. In Illustrator, confirm clipboard prefs include SVG or export an .svg file.
  2. In Figma, File > Import the SVG.
  3. Do not snip the artboard as a substitute for a logo.

Illustrator

Adobe documents clipboard handling under Edit > Preferences > Clipboard Handling (Windows). Official options include PDF, AICB, or both. Separate UI in current versions can include SVG/copy-as-SVG style checkboxes. PDF helps other Adobe apps. AICB preserves paths or appearance depending on the sub-option. SVG code is what browsers and some design tools want.

A paste into Word that looks like a muddy bitmap usually means the destination took the raster preview, not the PDF. Change prefs, or File > Save As / Export SVG or EMF and insert the file. Full pref teardown: Illustrator Clipboard Preferences That Change Everything.

Photoshop

Photoshop is a pixel editor. A pasted SVG from the OS often rasterizes on arrival. File > Place Embedded on an .svg file creates a Smart Object that can still scale better than a snip. For production icons, keep the SVG in the repo and place it.

Browsers and VS Code

Pasting SVG *text* into a code editor is the correct path for inline icons. Pasting into a contenteditable blog CMS may insert an <img> or escape the markup. When the CMS wants a file, upload icon.svg.

Chat apps

Discord, Slack, and Teams will not keep live vectors. They will upload a raster or a file. Attach icon.svg only if the audience can open it; otherwise export PNG at 2x. How to Paste a Snip Into Discord, Slack, and Teams.

How to force the format you want

Need pixels

  • Snip, or export PNG, or copy a raster layer.
  • Confirm with paste into Paint. If Paint shows the picture, a bitmap is present.

Need vectors

  • Copy as SVG from the source app, or export .svg.
  • Paste into a text editor. If the first characters are <svg, the markup traveled.
  • Import the file when paste rasterizes.

Need a file in Explorer

  • Export or Save as. Do not expect Win+V to drag out a vector.

Need both

  • Illustrator can place multiple formats on the clipboard at once (PDF + AICB + SVG, depending on prefs). Destinations pick one. That is by design.

Quality and the 4 MB cap

A 4K PNG of a logo is the wrong archive and may miss Win+V. The SVG string is tiny and history-friendly, but pinning SVG source in Win+V is still a bad component library (no names, reboot-safe only if pinned, no variants).

Put icons in the design system or the repo. Use the clipboard for a single hop.

Worked example: a 24-pixel favicon

  1. Open the SVG in a text editor. Confirm it is markup, not a binary.
  2. Copy the file in Explorer. Win+V likely shows nothing useful. Paste in a second folder — the file duplicates. That is HDROP, not SVG text.
  3. Open the SVG, select all markup, copy. Win+V can show the text if history is on.
  4. Paste into VS Code. Paths remain editable.
  5. Export a 48×48 PNG for chat previews. That PNG is pixels. Do not confuse it with the SVG in the repo.

Debugging a flattened logo

  1. Paste into Notepad. If Notepad fills with <svg, the OS has markup. The destination chose pixels anyway.
  2. Paste into Paint. If Paint shows the logo, a bitmap was also present.
  3. In Illustrator, enable SVG + PDF, recopy, repeat steps 1–2.
  4. If Notepad is empty and Paint has the logo, only pixels traveled. Export SVG from the source and import the file.

Security software and some clipboard managers strip “uncommon” formats. Test with the manager exited.

Icon grids and 4 MB

A PNG sprite sheet of hundreds of icons can miss history. The SVG sprite as text might fit. Still put the sprite in the repo. History is a hop.

Optional shelf

A shelf that stores text and images can hold an SVG string and a PNG preview as separate cards if both were copied. Edge-Drop is optional staging. It is not an SVG optimizer and it does not replace icons/ in the project.

FAQ

Should SVG be pinned in Win+V? Only as a temporary hop. A component library needs files and names.

Why does Word show a white box around an SVG paste? Office took a raster or flattened transparency. Insert the file or enable PDF copy in Illustrator.

Can history store both the SVG text and the PNG? Yes, as two copies, two slots, if both were copied separately and each qualifies. That still is not a design system.

Repo rule

icons/ holds SVG. icons/png/ holds the raster fallbacks. Clipboard is how an icon moves for five seconds. Pull requests do not accept Win+V cards.

Closing checklist

  • Decide before copy: need markup, pixels, or a file.
  • Paste into Notepad to prove SVG traveled; paste into Paint to prove a bitmap traveled.
  • Set Illustrator Clipboard Handling (PDF / AICB / SVG) to match the destination.
  • Import the .svg file when paste rasterizes.
  • Explorer copies of icon.svg are file lists, not Win+V cards.
  • Put production icons in the repo, not in pins.

Why this still matters in 2026

Destinations still pick one flavor from a multi-format clipboard. History still records only text, HTML, and bitmap. A logo that must stay a path belongs in an SVG file. A logo that must sit in chat belongs in a PNG. Confusing those two jobs is how sharp marks become muddy rectangles.
