How to Copy a Layer From Photoshop to Another Document

How to Copy a Layer From Photoshop to Another Document — Edge Drop Guide

Photoshop can move a layer without using the Windows clipboard at all. It can also copy pixels onto the OS clipboard, at which point Microsoft’s rules apply: one live item, optional 25-item history, 4 MB cap, bitmap/text/HTML, unpinned wipe on restart.

Knowing which path is in use stops “the layer lost its effects” and “Win+V does not show my layer” tickets.

Three official-style moves

Adobe’s copy-and-paste help covers selections and the fact that with nothing selected, the active layer’s pixels are what copy. Place Embedded is documented separately as a file-based layer.

MethodUses Windows clipboard?What arrives
Duplicate Layer (right-click layer > Duplicate Layer > Destination document)NoA new layer in the target, including many layer properties
Drag the layer from the Layers panel onto another document’s tab, then onto the canvasNoSame idea as duplicate via mouse
Ctrl+C / Ctrl+VYes, pixel payloadRaster pixels as a new layer. Smart Object linkage, some effects, and masks can flatten or rasterize depending on what was selected

Prefer Duplicate or drag when both documents are open in Photoshop. Prefer File > Place Embedded when the source is a file on disk. Use Ctrl+C when the destination is *not* Photoshop (Word, Slack, Mail).

Duplicate Layer, step by step

  1. Open both documents.
  2. In the source, select the layer (or a layer group).
  3. Right-click > Duplicate Layer.
  4. Set Document to the target filename (or New for a new file).
  5. Confirm.

The layer’s name, opacity, blend mode, and many effects travel inside Photoshop’s own duplicate logic. This does not create a Win+V card.

Drag between documents

  1. Arrange windows so both canvases can be reached (Window > Arrange).
  2. Drag the layer thumbnail onto the other document.
  3. Hold Shift while releasing if the install still uses Shift to drop centered (behavior can vary by version; check the result).

This is still an in-app drag. It is not a Windows file drop and not clipboard history.

Copy pixels when the OS clipboard is required

  1. Select the layer. If only part should travel, make a selection first.
  2. Edit > Copy or Ctrl+C. Adobe notes that with no selection, the active layer is copied.
  3. Edit > Copy Merged if the visible composite of the selection is what the destination needs.
  4. Switch to the other document or another app.
  5. Ctrl+V.

What other apps receive is a bitmap (and sometimes extra Adobe formats). Word will not receive a live Smart Object. Slack will recompress.

What Win+V receives is that bitmap, if history is on, the payload is under 4 MB, and the format is accepted. A large 4K layer will paste in Photoshop and skip history. That is expected. Windows Clipboard 4 MB Cap: What Gets Dropped.

Smart Objects versus copied pixels

  • Place Embedded creates a Smart Object from a file. Transforms stay non-destructive.
  • Duplicate Layer of an existing Smart Object typically keeps it a Smart Object in the target (still inside Photoshop).
  • Ctrl+C of pixels is a flattened raster of what was copied. Filters on the Smart Object may be baked into those pixels.

If the job is “reuse the logo so it can be updated later,” Place or duplicate the Smart Object. If the job is “send a preview to chat,” Copy Merged and accept pixels.

Linked Smart Objects follow a file path. Duplicating across machines without the linked file breaks the link. That is a file problem, not a clipboard problem.

Groups, masks, and adjustment layers

Duplicate a group when the mask and children must stay together. Copy-paste of a selection often drops the mask relationship and creates a single pixel layer.

Adjustment layers have no useful pixel payload for Slack. Duplicate them inside Photoshop. Copying them to the OS clipboard is the wrong tool.

New document from clipboard

File > New can offer a document the size of the clipboard image when a bitmap is present. That is a fast way to confirm the OS clipboard holds pixels. It is also how a snip becomes a Photoshop file. Save immediately if the image matters. How to Get a Screenshot Into Photoshop Without Recopying.

Do not use Win+V as a layer library

Pins of bitmaps are not layers. They have no blend modes, no names, and they compete with copied passwords and URLs for 25 slots. Export logo-dark.psd or a PNG into the project.

Worked example: a badge layer into a social template

  1. Open badge.psd and social-template.psd.
  2. Duplicate the badge group into the template (right-click > Duplicate Layer > destination).
  3. Confirm the drop shadow is still a layer effect, not pixels.
  4. Only if the template is a third-party app, Copy Merged and paste, then accept flattening.

If step 2 is replaced by Ctrl+C in a hurry, the badge may arrive without its vector mask. Undo in the template and duplicate instead.

Clipboard size inside Photoshop

Photoshop has its own export clipboard preference (older Export Clipboard checkbox in General preferences on many versions). When that is on, leaving Photoshop can push a huge bitmap to the OS clipboard and freeze a PC briefly. Turn Export Clipboard off if the OS clipboard should not receive every large copy. In-app duplicate and drag still work. Confirm the checkbox label on the installed version; names have moved between releases.

A huge exported clipboard bitmap will not join Win+V (4 MB) but can still be the live item and surprise the next paste in Word.

Guides and positions

Duplicate Layer does not always preserve canvas position relative to a different document size. Nudge after the drop. Copy-paste of pixels lands according to the destination’s paste rules, not the source’s coordinates.

Optional shelf

A shelf can hold a copied bitmap or an exported PNG for drag into another app. It cannot hold a live Photoshop layer stack. Edge-Drop is optional after Export As. Duplicate Layer remains the in-app answer.

FAQ

Does Duplicate Layer use one of the 25 history slots? No. It stays inside Photoshop.

Why is the pasted layer bigger than the canvas? The copied pixels include transparent bounds from the source. Crop or Layer > Trim.

Can a Smart Object be pasted into Word? Word receives pixels or an embedded image, not a live PSB. Export.

Team machines

Duplicate Layer works the same on every Photoshop seat. Clipboard format availability does not, because other apps and managers differ. Teach Duplicate first. Teach Place Embedded second. Teach Ctrl+C last.

Closing checklist

  • Both documents open: Duplicate Layer or drag. Skip the OS clipboard.
  • Destination is Word or Slack: Copy Merged and accept pixels.
  • Need a reusable logo: Place Embedded or duplicate a Smart Object.
  • Huge copies: consider turning off Photoshop Export Clipboard so the OS is not flooded.
  • Win+V shows a bitmap only if history is on and the payload is under 4 MB. It never shows a layer stack.

Why this still matters in 2026

Photoshop still has in-app duplicate and drag that never touch Win+V. The OS clipboard still flattens what it can and still drops items over 4 MB from history. Teach Duplicate Layer first. Use Ctrl+C when the destination is not Photoshop. Keep Smart Objects in files when they must be updated later.

One more habit

If a layer must appear in five documents, duplicate into a library PSD and Place Linked. Five clipboard pastes create five uncoupled rasters that drift.

Guides and rulers do not travel through Ctrl+C. Recreate them or drag from a template document.

The click-path is in Premiere and After Effects: Still Frames on the Clipboard.
