Which Illustrator Clipboard Settings Actually Matter?
By Khushi Yadav
Illustrator can place several representations on the Windows clipboard at once. The destination app picks one. Edit > Preferences > Clipboard Handling is where those representations are chosen. Adobe’s help page “Copy artwork using the clipboard” tells Windows users to open that pane and select PDF, AICB, or both.
A paste into Word that looks like a fuzzy screenshot is often a destination choosing the raster preview because the preferred vector format was never offered.
Windows history will not tell you which representation won. History stores text, HTML, and bitmap, 25 items, 4 MB, unpinned items cleared on restart. It may show a thumbnail of a preview bitmap and hide the PDF/AICB/SVG that actually mattered to InDesign.
Open the right pane
- In Illustrator on Windows: Edit > Preferences > Clipboard Handling.
- On macOS the same help page lists Illustrator > Preferences > Clipboard Handling.
- Apply, then copy again. Changing prefs does not rewrite what is already on the clipboard.
Current Illustrator builds may also show Include SVG Code or a Copy As SVG-style checkbox in this pane or nearby. Names shift slightly by version. The jobs do not: PDF for Adobe-to-Adobe and many Office inserts, AICB for path-level interchange, SVG for web and some UI tools.
If the machine is managed, Preferences may be reset by a Creative Cloud packager. After an Illustrator update, glance at the pane once. A silent reset to bitmap-only is a common “paste got worse this week” cause.
What each format is for
| Option | What it offers | Typical winner |
|---|---|---|
| A PDF snippet of the artwork on the clipboard | InDesign, other Illustrator documents, many Office pastes that understand PDF | |
| AICB | Adobe Illustrator Clipboard — paths, with Preserve Paths or Preserve Appearance | Older workflows and some apps that want editable paths without PDF |
| SVG / Include SVG Code | SVG markup | Figma, browsers, code editors, some web builders |
Preserve Paths (AICB) favors geometry. Preserve Appearance favors the look, even if that means expanding effects. If a paste into another vector tool loses live effects, try the other AICB sub-option or copy PDF instead.
Copying both PDF and AICB increases compatibility and clipboard size. That size can matter when Windows history tries to store a bitmap preview. History’s 4 MB cap applies to each history item. A huge artboard copy may paste in InDesign and never appear in Win+V.
SVG vs PNG on the Clipboard. Windows Clipboard 4 MB Cap: What Gets Dropped.
Why Word and PowerPoint look like garbage
Office will happily paste:
- A PDF (sharp, sometimes uneditable)
- A metafile
- A bitmap (soft, huge, wrong)
If only a bitmap is available — SVG off, PDF off, AICB off, or a third-party clipboard utility that stripped formats — Office takes the bitmap. Fix:
- Enable PDF in Clipboard Handling.
- Recopy the art.
- In Word, use Home > Paste dropdown > Paste Special and pick the PDF or device-independent option if listed.
If the slide must stay editable in Office, export EMF or use Copy after confirming AICB/PDF, then Paste Special. For a logo that must not be edited, export PNG at 2x and insert the file. Do not snip the Illustrator window.
A snip of the artboard includes the chrome, the wrong resolution, and no vectors. Win+Shift+S Not Saving What You Think It Saves.
Linked images inside the artwork may or may not travel. If the logo depends on a placed PSD that is missing, the PDF snippet can still look right while the next machine shows a low-res proxy. File > Package or embed before a handoff that will leave this PC.
Figma, web, and SVG
Figma and many web tools want SVG text. If Illustrator copies only PDF/AICB, those tools may rasterize or paste nothing.
- Enable SVG on the clipboard if the version offers it.
- Recopy.
- Paste into a text editor. Success looks like
<svg. - If Figma still rasterizes, Export > SVG and import the file. File import is the reliable path.
Figma’s import help is the official “when paste fails” door. Clipboard SVG is a convenience. An .svg file is the asset.
Do not paste Word’s flattened bitmap *out* of a flyer into Figma and call it the logo.
Photoshop
Photoshop will rasterize most Illustrator clipboard pastes. For a logo that must stay sharp, File > Export SVG or PDF and Place Embedded in Photoshop. Copy-paste is the preview path.
How to Copy a Layer From Photoshop to Another Document is the Photoshop-to-Photoshop cousin. Illustrator-to-Photoshop is usually Place, not paste.
Transparency: a rasterized paste may pick up a white matte. How to Keep Transparent PNGs Transparent Through Paste. Export PNG with alpha and Place when the logo sits on a dark mock.
Windows history is the wrong inspector
Win+V shows a thumbnail or a text snippet. It will not list “PDF + AICB + SVG.” It might show:
- A bitmap preview (if under 4 MB)
- SVG source as text (if that format was copied and history grabbed text)
- Nothing, if the payload was a huge preview or a format history ignores
Do not debug Illustrator prefs by staring at Win+V. Debug by Paste Special in the destination or by pasting into Notepad (text?) and Paint (pixels?).
Unpinned history still clears on restart. Pins of SVG source are not a symbol library.
Enable history if SVG-as-text is useful this session. Leave Clipboard history across your devices off. SVG source of a client logo is text and *will* sync if that toggle is on.
Third-party clipboard tools can break AI paste
Clipboard managers that “normalize” or keep only one format have a long history of turning Illustrator copies into bitmaps (classic examples include utilities that snapshot the clipboard). If paste suddenly rasterizes after installing a manager, disable the manager and test again. Adobe community threads have documented this class of failure for years.
A shelf that only *stages* copies without stripping formats is less dangerous than one that rewrites the clipboard every time. Edge-Drop is optional and is not a substitute for Clipboard Handling. If a manager is in use and vectors die, turn it off for Illustrator sessions.
Do not run a “clear clipboard” cleaner on a timer while copying between Illustrator and InDesign. It will win the race.
Worked example: logo into Word and Figma
- Enable PDF and SVG. Recopy the logo.
- Word: Paste Special. Prefer PDF if listed. The logo should stay sharp when the flyer is printed.
- Figma desktop: paste. If the result is grouped vectors, stop. If it is an image, import the exported
.svginstead. - Slack: attach
logo.svgor a 2x PNG. Do not paste the Word bitmap out of the flyer.
If step 2 is still soft, confirm no manager is stripping formats. Copy again after quitting the manager.
Effects that force rasterization
Drop shadows, Gaussian blurs, and raster textures may travel as flattened artwork even when PDF is on, depending on how they were built. Expand appearance in a duplicate document before copy if the destination must not depend on live effects. That is an Illustrator decision, not a Windows history decision.
Live paint, opacity masks, and raster effects are the usual suspects. A 300 ppi raster effect that looks sharp in Illustrator can still become a bitmap layer in the destination.
Complex maps and detailed linework also hit clipboard size. If switching apps hitches after Ctrl+C, export a file and place it.
Performance
PDF + AICB + SVG on a dense map illustration makes a large clipboard. Copying then switching apps can hitch. For huge posters, export a file and place it. The 4 MB history cap will hide the preview anyway.
Copying an entire 16-artboard file is the wrong unit. Select the logo group. Copy that.
Recommended starting point
- PDF: on (Adobe and Office)
- AICB: on, Preserve Appearance if the look matters more than live effects; switch to Paths when the next app must edit anchors
- SVG: on if Figma or the web is a regular destination
- Recopy after changes
- Export files for anything that will be reused next week
Browser editors (Canva, Photopea) are a different paste world. They see what the browser allows, not AICB. Canva, Photopea, and Browser Editors: Paste Limits. Export SVG or PNG and upload.
